GBCA Live Session II: Standouts

Christian Drummer2022 6-4 G Christian Drummer – Archer
The centerpiece of Archer’s tenacious defense and unselfish offense, Christian Drummer is the two-way motor that makes the Tigers a legitimate threat to play the role of disruptor in Class 7A. Drummer is a big guard that can play on or off the ball. He’s able to score in a variety of ways, but is at his best when slashing to the basket and drawing fouls. He finished with 16 points, 3 rebounds, 3 assists and 1 steal in a 45-28 win over Lincoln, FL. Drummer went 5-7 from the line and hit a three-pointer. Christian impacts games on both ends of the floor and can always be counted on to stuff the stat sheet. He’s a well-balanced all-around player that takes pride in his defense. Drummer is a stock riser to watch this season.

Keion Wallace2023 6-3 W Keion Wallace – Effingham County
A dual-sport star, Keion Wallace is a strong-bodied athlete that gets to the rim consistently. He’s quick and strong enough to force his way to the hoop without getting knocked off course. Wallace can hang in the air for acrobatic finishes and is tough to stop in transition. He finished with 13 points and 4 rebounds in a win over Monroe Area, scoring all of his field goals in the paint. If Wallace can develop a consistent outside shot, he will rapidly rise up recruiting boards but with offers to play football at Georgia Tech and Texas A&M, Keion’s future will certainly take him to the gridiron.

2024 6-2 G Camden Parada – Aquinas
When Camden Parada was left open in the corner, he was automatic from deep. The three-point specialist drained 5 threes en route to 19 points, 8 rebounds and 2 blocks. As Aquinas’ tallest player, Parada is forced into defending opponents’ post presences and serving as a forward on offense for the Irish. Giving up size defensively, Parada battles well inside as a rebounder and can alter some shots. His advantage is on offense when bigger players have to try and chase him around the arc.  Parada’s efforts in the paint will only help him down the road as he serves as a versatile piece.

Micah Hoover2023 6-5 F Micah Hoover – King’s Ridge
Aquinas had no answer inside for Micah Hoover, who tallied 27 points, 11 rebounds and 2 blocks. Hoover is a combo-forward that can play inside and out. He’s a mismatch with his versatility and ability to exploit weaknesses. Hoover can score all over the floor. He has a respectable outside shot and can take his man off the dribble when attacking from the perimeter.  Hoover has quality footwork with his back to the basket and can score with hook shots. Micah crashes the glass hard and plays above the rim when given the opportunity.

2022 6-5 W Donovan Hand – Fayette County
Next in a long line of multi-dimensional wings, Donovan Hand could play a big role for Fayette County this season. Hand has a smooth approach to the game. He can glide to the basket or shoot the three when on the perimeter. His outside shot may need to speed up slightly. Hand looks comfortable in the post, able to back down his man and score over top.

2024 6-4 F Nile King – ELCA
In a game that was already well decided, Nile King played hard until the final buzzer. His length and energy helped force turnovers in the press. King, a long lefty, was aggressive on the boards. He earned putbacks and could score on difficult reverse layups. Nile finished with 14 points, 9 rebounds and 1 assist.

2023 6-9 F Spencer Elliott – St. Pius X
Back from injury, Spencer Elliott will give St. Pius something they haven’t consistently had for a long time: a true post presence with great size and an ability to score around the rim. Elliott is long and lean, but plays with functional strength. He has good balance on the low block and can make physical drop steps to set up scoring opportunities. Elliott has skilled feet, able to use an up-and-under and score with hook shots. It will be interesting to see how Spencer develops over his next two seasons. He could see D-I options materialize.

2022 6-8 PF Nordin Kapic – Denmark
The Austrian man-child announced his presence to the state with a physical brand of basketball that was blended with a high skill level. Kapic is as strong as an ox. He’s got a college body and isn’t afraid to use it. He crashes the offensive glass hard and is quick to loose balls. Kapic has good footwork on the perimeter and on the block. He can handle like a guard at times and will cause mismatches for slower big men that try to defend him away from the basket. Nordin posted 8 points, 7 rebounds and 1 assist in a 30-24 win over St. Pius X. His addition along with other international move-ins makes Denmark an interesting group with upside as the season moves along. D-I programs have already taken notice.

D'ante Bass2022 6-7 W D’ante Bass – Windsor Forest
D’ante Bass is a genetic freak. At 6-foot-7, Bass can jump out of the gym. The elite athlete profiles as a wing at the next level but really is more of a combo-forward that does his best work in the paint right now. His outside shot was off in a 47-24 win over Chapel Hill, but he was able to earn putbacks and went 6-10 from the line to finish with 10 points, 12 rebounds, 1 assist, 1 steal and 1 block. Nailing down his jump shot will take the lefty to another level. He’s already a High Major recruit based on his upside.

2022 6-4 PF Jontavion Hughes – Franklin County
JoJo is a bulldozer inside. The defensive lineman has big burly shoulders and soft hands in the paint. He’s able to easily move opponents out of the way when battling for position and can collect rebounds at a high rate. Hughes has improved each year offensively. He can score on hook shots, drop steps and mid-range jumpers. Hughes can finish with either hand on the low block. Jontavion posted 14 points, 8 rebounds, 1 assist and 1 steal in a loss to Thomson. He along with fellow football star Keylan Rutledge form possibly the strongest pound-for-pound frontcourt in the state.

Tydrekis Braswell2022 6-3 W Tydrekis Braswell – Thomson
It was Tydrekis Braswell’s relentless attack that propelled Thomson to a 57-41 win over Franklin County. Braswell is an aggressive slasher that can get to the rim. He can use spin moves to free himself. Braswell was able to finish through contact. Tydrekis also made an impact on defense. He led Thomson in nearly every category as he finished with 19 points, 6 rebounds, 2 assists, 3 steals and 1 block.

Jarrod Taylor2022 6-1 CG Jarrod Taylor – Salem
Finally getting my first glimpse at Jarrod Taylor, the Tennessee import didn’t disappoint. He’s a strong tough-nosed guard that loves to get in the paint. Taylor is physical enough to absorb contact downhill. Jarrod was able to mix in some wrinkles, hitting a three, pulling up from the mid-range and dropping in a floater as he tallied 13 points and 3 rebounds.

Lamar Haynes2022 6-3 W Lamar Haynes – Clarke Central
Lamar Haynes is one of the hardest playing wings I’ve seen this summer. While he may not be as skilled as some of the elites in Georgia, wherever he may have a shortcoming, Haynes makes up for it with his effort. He’s a quality slasher and a great rebounder for his size. Haynes will scrap with bigger players to come away with 50/50 balls. He sank 2 threes in a 38-31 loss to Morgan County, finishing with 8 points, 10 rebounds, 1 assist and 1 steal.

Marquavious Wright2022 6-3 W Marquavious Wright – Morgan County
Marquavious Wright catches your eye right away. He’s a well put together athletic wing that attacks the basket and rebounds. He had 9 points, 7 rebounds, 1 assist and 2 steals. He showed flashes of a sneaky good upside in a win over Clarke Central. Wright is a player I will need to see more of.

Joseph Frazier2022 6-2 G Joseph Frazier – Lee County
With MJ Taylor and his late game heroics now graduated, expect Joseph Frazier to have plenty of opportunities to guide the Trojans to another successful season. He returns as the team’s leading scorer at 8.2 points per game. Frazier is a bouncy guard with an all-around floor game. All of his offense came in the paint in a 34-32 win over Statesboro, catching two lobs and scoring on a drive to go with 5-5 foul shooting to finish with 11 points, 4 rebounds, 5 assists, 1 steal and 1 block. Frazier draws plenty of attention when he gets two feet in the paint and can find the open man. He is a quality defender, able to use his length and athleticism to stay in front of ball handlers.

Zion Davis2022 6-3 W Zion Davis – Dublin
In a low scoring gritty game in which Dublin fell to Langston Hughes 32-29, Zion Davis shined with a whopping 16 points and 6 rebounds. He’s a tough long-armed wing that has a good jump shot to go with an ability to slice his way to the basket. He hit a pair of threes and knocked down a mid-range jumper when points were at a premium.  Davis is talented in the open floor, able to go coast-to-coast. At the rim, Davis uses his athleticism and deft touch to finish difficult lay-ins. Zion could be in line for an All-State campaign if he continues his steady play.

2023 6-2 CG Jeremiah Taylor – South Paulding
Shorthanded South Paulding didn’t have enough firepower to support Jeremiah Taylor, one of the top scorers in the event, in a 60-53 loss to Westside-Augusta. Taylor is a great athlete that plays above the rim. He can sometimes be a slow starter as he watches the game take shape before making his impact. He scored 15 of his game-high 19 points in the second half to go with 6 rebounds, 3 assists and 2 steals. Taylor is a streaky shooter and a talented slasher. He can score in a variety of ways downhill. When Taylor isn’t scoring the ball, he’s facilitating. He is able to drive and dump to open teammates inside. Taylor is on track to be a hot commodity among D-II programs with D-I development still within reach.

2023 5-11 PG Amauri Tillman – Westside-Augusta
The quickness and energetic play of Amauri Tillman set the tone for Westside. He’s a shifty guard that gets to his spots in the mid-range. Tillman scores the ball off the dribble well as he creates separation. He had 10 points, 7 rebounds, 1 assist and 1 steal.

Ethan Davis2023 6-5 W Ethan Davis – Collins Hill
Ethan Davis was a one-man wrecking crew against Meadowcreek, overwhelming the Mustangs with 23 points, 6 rebounds and 3 steals. The dual-sport star did major damage getting to the rim. He is so strong and athletic; he can overpower defenders when getting inside where he finishes with authority. Davis scored at all three levels. He took advantage of smaller defenders in the low post and scored off the dribble from the mid-range and three-point line. Davis has developed into the complete package on offense. On defense, he uses his wide receiver skills to make plays on passes in the press. Davis has a breakout season on the horizon. High Major programs are recruiting him to play both football and basketball.

2025 6-1 PG EJ Colson – Peach County
The rising freshman may be better known for his quarterback play, but on the hardwood EJ Colson is a dynamic athlete that can be difficult to keep in front. Colson is a playmaker. He can weave through the defense before deciding whether to score or pass. Colson drives hard to the hoop and uses a pro-hop in the lane. He can pull-up on a dime from the mid-range and also has a soft touch on his floater. Colson provides great effort as an on-ball defender, using his quickness to frustrate opponents. He tallied 9 points, 3 rebounds, 3 assists and 3 steals in a loss to Darlington.
