Early season tournaments are in full swing, pitting Top 10 opponents against one another as the statewide picture begins to slowly materialize.

At the Powder Springs Showcase, Class 7A No. 1 Wheeler raced past Class 6A No. 4 Etowah 76-52. Over at Hawks-Naismith, No. 2 McEachern toppled Class 6A No. 1 Grovetown 88-80 behind Moses Hipps’ 27 points and JaMichael Davis’ 18. No. 5 Grayson slips two spots after beating Class A D-I No. 1 King’s Ridge 86-68 on the road, but losing 70-67 to No. 4 Pebblebrook at the On The Radar Tip-Off Classic as Dayton-signee Jaiun Simon powered the Falcons with 30 points. No. 3 Norcross took care of Class 6A No. 8 Marist 60-45 at OTR. No. 6 Newton crushed Class 5A No. 5 Mays 86-58 and are expected to have Indiana-signee Jakai Newton return to the lineup in early 2023. No. 9 Berkmar slips two spots following a 54-44 loss at Mays. Parkview (2-2) couldn’t survive another week without Mike Matthews, losing to Mountain View (65-60) and Class A D-II No. 1 Greenforest (65-59) at OTR to drop out of the poll. No. 10 Osborne resurfaces after a clean 3-0 week, their best win coming 71-63 over Luella at the Peach State Explosion.

Class 6A took some lumps against other classifications as six Top 10 teams lost, but no one drops out. No. 1 Grovetown beat last week’s Class 3A No. 2 Cross Creek 71-54 before losing to Class 7A No. 2 McEachern 88-80 at Hawks-Naismith. No. 2 Alexander opened the season with a 59-48 win over Archer, receiving 19 points, 11 rebounds, 4 assists, 5 steals and 3 blocks from Braedan Lue while JayQuan Nelson debuted with 15 points. No. 4 Etowah is down a slot after a 76-52 loss to Class 7A No. 1 Wheeler at the Powder Springs Showcase while No. 5 Langston Hughes also lost at the event, 69-48 to Class 4A No. 1 McDonough. At the Jared Cook Classic, No. 6 St. Pius X shot 3-19 from three in a 58-41 loss to Class A D-I No. 1 King’s Ridge. OTR saw No. 7 Lanier lose 49-45 to Class A D-I No. 2 Mt. Vernon Presbyterian while No. 8 Marist couldn’t keep pace with Class 7A No. 3 Norcross 60-45. No. 9 Paulding County opened the season with an 88-57 win over Whitefield Academy as Frantzyr Chardavoine netted 25 points. No. 10 Sequoyah rolled Loganville at the Dacula Tip-Off Classic 85-43, Alabama Huntsville-signee Preston Parker exploding for 31 points, 7 rebounds and 7 assists.

There’s significant movement in Class 5A as No. 2 Eagle’s Landing jumps No. 3 Tri-Cities. The Eagles blasted North Gwinnett 70-48 at the Jared Cook Classic while Tri-Cities held on against shorthanded Walnut Grove 62-60 at OTR, Presbyterian-signee Kory Mincy dropping 26 points. No. 5 Mays inches up a spot, beating last week’s Class 7A No. 7 Berkmar 54-44 behind Mykel Williams’ 27 points, 5 rebounds and 5 assists before losing to Class 7A No. 6 Newton 86-58, Mays still awaiting the return of All-State guard Saulamon Evans off the gridiron.  No. 7 Heritage-Conyers jumps into the poll riding a three-game winning streak, most impressively knocking off No. 8 Tucker 57-54. No. 9 Chapel Hill slips a spot after losing to Class 4A No. 2 Pace Academy 72-63. No. 10 Dutchtown clings onto their spot following a 2-1 week which saw the Bulldogs beat Class 4A No. 5 Miller Grove 55-47 and split at the Andrew Jackson Classic in Jacksonville, Florida. Adrian Avery collected 15 points and 7 rebounds in a 61-45 win over Potter’s House, FL. Just getting squeezed out of the rankings is Statesboro (1-0). The Blue Devils pulled away late to escape Tattnall County 51-40.

Class 4A No. 1 McDonough made an early statement at the Powder Springs Showcase, dismantling Class 6A No. 5 Langston Hughes 69-48 as Da’Avion Thomas scored 14 points and Amon McDowell added 13 points and 7 rebounds.  No. 2 Pace Academy fended off Class 5A No. 9 Chapel Hill 72-63 at the Powder Springs Showcase, Kyle Greene scoring 18 points. Michigan-commit Christian Anderson had his way with Central Gwinnett at OTR as he poured in 28 points in No. 3 Lovett’s 79-52 win. No. 5 Miller Grove holds tight after falling to Class 5A No. 10 Dutchtown 55-47 on the road. No. 6 Westover lost 49-44 at Class 2A No. 5 Sumter County before blasting Colquitt County 67-29. No. 7 Westside-Macon opened the season with a 60-41 win over Rutland as Daveon Henderson scored 25 points. No. 8 Madison County climbs a spot with a 70-65 overtime win at Hart County and a 70-57 victory against Trinity Christian at the Peach State Explosion, Jay Carruth erupting for 27 points. No. 9 Fayette County sinks a spot with an 80-66 loss at East Coweta. Holy Innocents’ (0-2) is out, losing 70-64 to Hillgrove and 73-72 to rival Riverwood at Hawks-Naismith. No. 10 Hapeville Charter sneaks into the Top 10. Their latest win came at South Atlanta 75-61 with Coleman Riley scoring 27 points and Brian Irving II collecting 9 points and 13 rebounds.

The defending Class 3A champs are reeling early in the season, albeit against top competition. No. 4 Cross Creek is down two spots after they competed with Class 6A No. 1 Grovetown but lost 71-54 on the road. The Razorbacks had another shot at playing a champion from Augusta, but were blasted by Class 2A No. 1 Westside-Augusta 101-72. No. 1 Sandy Creek secured a 61-48 win over Chelsea, AL at the Spartan Turkey Jam while No. 2 Johnson-Savannah creamed Peach County 97-42, Antonio Baker racking up 30 points, 8 rebounds, 7 assists and 5 steals. No. 3 Beach, also up a spot, survived at Savannah 58-57 behind Shamarrie Hugie’s 28 points. No. 5 Monroe fell to Meadowcreek at the Powder Springs Showcase 63-56, Justin Burns finishing with 20 points. No. 6 Thomasville hangs tight after losing 78-73 to Lowndes and 63-59 to Bainbridge, but rebounding with an 84-81 overtime win at Class A D-II No. 7 Calhoun County, AJ Dent winning it with 27 points and 12 rebounds. No. 7 Wesleyan got 21 points from Josh Kavel in their 63-43 win over Westminster. Salem (0-2) falls out after a 41-33 loss at Lithonia. No. 9 Oconee County debuts with wins over Clarke Central 61-47 and Central Gwinnett 62-48.

No. 1 Westside-Augusta is back clicking on all cylinders in Class 2A, going on the road to destroy Richmond Academy 98-63 and last week’s Class 3A No. 2 Cross Creek 101-72, Khalon Hudson (29), Jalexs Ewing (23) and AuMauri Tillman (16) combining for 68 points. No. 5 Sumter County beat Randolph-Clay 51-35 and held off Class 4A No. 6 Westover 49-44. No. 9 Washington slips a spot after losing 72-67 to Maynard Jackson at the HBCU Challenge. North Cobb Christian (0-0) departs as they await their debut. No. 8 Providence Christian surges into the poll scoring wins over Lakeside-DeKalb 67-63 and shorthanded West Forsyth 49-33 at the Raider Classic, Samuel Thacker scoring 15 points.

Class A D-I was busy this week. No. 1 King’s Ridge lost to last week’s Class 7A No. 3 Grayson 86-68 before rebounding with a 58-41 win over Class 6A No. 6 St. Pius X at the Jared Cook Classic getting 14 points apiece from Micah Hoover and Jaydon Cole. No. 2 Mt. Vernon Presbyterian knocked off Class 6A No. 7 Lanier 49-45 at OTR, Keith Williams posting 15 points and 7 rebounds. No. 3 Mt. Bethel rolled at the Raider Classic, dumping Dunwoody 76-55 as Mo Diao went for 28 points, 11 rebounds and 5 blocks. No. 6 Paideia falls a spot after a 90-56 loss to Woodward Academy at Hawks-Naismith. No. 5 Tallulah Falls climbs two places with a 61-39 win over Marietta at the Jackson EMC Tip-Off Classic, Anfernee Hanna netting 30 points. No. 9 Woodville-Tompkins got into the win column beating Richmond Hill 59-56 and New Hampstead 72-63, Alfonzo Ross dropping 32 points against the Phoenix.

In Class A D-II, No. 1 Greenforest beat last week’s Class 7A No. 10 Parkview at OTR, 65-59. No. 4 Portal inches up a spot after the Panthers netted wins over Evans (62-60) and Effingham County (52-51). No. 7 Calhoun County lost at home to Class 3A No. 6 Thomasville, 84-81 in overtime.

Hillgrove 70, 4ANo. 10 Holy Innocents’ 64: Holy Innocents’ was led by Will Hopkins’ 21 points, 4 rebounds, 4 assists and 2 blocks. Freshman Devin Hutcherson added 18 points, 5 rebounds and 2 blocks. Harrison Verlander and PJ Mace scored 8 points apiece. Caleb Wilson was held to 6 points, 6 rebounds and 2 blocks.

Denmark 50, Mountain View 48:  Keinan McFarlande scored 18 points. Mountain View was led by Mike White’s 17 points and Bronson Blair’s 14.

Brookwood 68, Winder-Barrow 59:  Christian Reid had 14 points and 3 assists. RJ Williams finished with 13 points and 4 assists. Alex Young double-doubled with 11 points and 11 rebounds.

West Forsyth 48, Mill Creek 44: Will Moore had 16 points and 4 rebounds while Lachlan Povenz scored 10 points and Braden Halloran netted 8. Mill Creek was led by Jonathan Taylor’s 17 points and 4 assists. Nate Eroh collected 11 points and 9 rebounds.

Archer 63, South Forsyth 38: Kahmare Holmes had 13 points, 5 rebounds and 3 steals. Elijah Davis posted 9 points and Bryce Kennedy chipped in 7 points and 5 rebounds.

Cherokee 84, Centennial 71: Cameron Pope (24), Lawrence Sanford (19) and Tayden Owens (16) charged the attack. Braylin Giddens added 11 points.

Woodward Academy 69, Griffin 66: Brandon Peters posted 23 points and 4 rebounds. Deke Cooper added 13 points, 4 rebounds and 1 block.

Creekview 59, Cass 54: Luke Godwin finished with 18 points and 5 rebounds followed by Luke Jack’s 17 points and 5 rebounds. Nolan Tricker added 10 points and 5 rebounds.

North Atlanta 56, Midtown 52: Josh Griffith posted 28 points, 2 rebounds, 2 assists and 2 steals. Josiah Coleman had 11 points, 6 rebounds and 1 block. Joshua Goode tallied 7 points, 6 rebounds and 5 assists.

Douglas County 75, Banneker 42: Shamar Echols (11), Authur Johnson (9) and Khalid Racine (9) led the Tigers.

Chamblee 56, Roswell 55: In the loss, Will Petteys scored 14 points. Robby Hunter had 12 while Michael Duncan and Jaylen Nelson pitched in 10 points apiece.

No. 4 Beach 72, South Effingham 60: Shamarrie Hugie posted 22 points. James Leach had 15 points, Chandler Reid 13 and Tyrese Bellamy 9.

Bremen 51, Pepperell 28:  Cade Costanzo finished with 12 points, 5 rebounds and 5 steals. Carson Ballew and Sully Senft each scored 7 points.

Providence Christian 67, Lakeside-DeKalb 63: Thomas Malcolm finished with 20 points and 8 rebounds. Devin Long tallied 17 points, 7 rebounds and 2 assists. Samuel Thacker scored 15 points while Kamron Carryl tacked on 12 points, 8 rebounds and 3 assists.

Walker 48, Lassiter 34: 6-foot-8 freshman Moustapha Diop put up 17 points, 14 rebounds and 3 blocks. Noah Pederson scored 9 points. Andrew Carey had 8 points and 6 rebounds.

East Jackson 58, Lumpkin County 46: Hunter Cooper scored 13 points and Cal Faulkner added 10 in the loss.

Athens Academy 63, West Hall 58: Isaac Rorey tallied 17 points, 4 rebounds and 10 assists. Justen Goudelock scored 16 points and Westbrook Adams had 15. Kymel Williams totaled 13 points, 4 rebounds and 4 assists.

Mt. Paran 57, Fellowship Christian 34: Cameron Hewling had 18 points, 4 rebounds and 3 steals while Tony LoPresti scored 8 points.

No. 1 Brookwood 67, Winder-Barrow 20: UAB-signee Jade Weathersby had 14 points, 8 rebounds, 3 assists and 6 steals. Danielle Osho scored 14 points while Ohio State-signee Diana Collins tallied 12 points and 5 assists. Kennedy Daniels added 8 points and 5 steals.

No. 3 Norcross 63, A D-INo. 1 Galloway 59: Jania Akins scored 23 points while Veronaye Charlton (18) and Mariyah Valrie (12) combined for 30.

Grayson 66, Mays 46: Tatum Brown dumped in 27 points. Jyahni Smith chipped in 14.

North Cobb 49, Etowah 48: Chisom Eziomume scored at the buzzer, part of her 8 points to win the game. Sonia Velez led the way with 11 points. Erinne Giles scored 9 and Armani Shaw chipped in 8 points.

Johns Creek 44, Chattahoochee 39: Nylah Nuri recorded 14 points, 8 rebounds and 4 steals. Grace Landeck netted 12 points and Meredith Hillam double-doubled with 10 points and 11 rebounds.

Riverwood 73, Alpharetta 55: Lizzie McGrath (19), Jada Wood (18) and Hannah McConnell (12) balanced the offense.

Morrow 52, Ola 48: Anaya Lewis led Ola with 16 points, 14 rebounds and 4 steals. Emmanuel-signee Emma Leonard had 14 points and 8 rebounds. Jasmine Watson finished with 8 points and 5 rebounds.

Decatur 50, Paideia 38: Cornelia Ellington led the Bulldogs with 19 points. Colby College-signee Marlo Simms posted 14 points. Jade Gamory netted 7 points.

Locust Grove 64, Mt. Zion-Jonesboro 16: Aijah Manning erupted for 27 points, 12 rebounds and 10 steals. Leilani Ward tallied 14 points, 4 rebounds and 7 assists.

Blessed Trinity 71, Mt. Bethel 38: Christina Lair poured in a school-record 36 points.

No. 3 Griffin 62, 6ANo. 8 Woodward Academy 56: Zy Thompson scored a game-high 26 points followed by Aaliyah Duranham’s 16 points and Leah Turner’s 9. Kayla Whitner led Woodward Academy with 17 points while George Washington-signee Sara Lewis posted 14 points, 7 rebounds and 5 steals.

No. 6 Westminster 53, 5ANo. 9 GAC 47: GAC was led by Arlington Christian-transfer Elizabeth Luick’s 16 points. Trinity Thomas scored 12, Myla Benton netted 11 and Asia Johnson finished with 8 points.

No. 7 East Forsyth 62, 6ANo. 10 Woodstock 43: Woodstock was led by Bree Rogers and Emily Jacobs’ 11 points apiece. Cam Schlichting added 10.

North Oconee 65, KIPP Atlanta 45: Freshman Laura Frances Willis compiled 18 points, 4 rebounds and 4 assists. Madison Forbes scored 12 points. Aiyanna Peavy had 9 points and 5 rebounds. Reese Riddle totaled 7 points, 4 rebounds and 3 assists.

Cherokee Bluff 62, Apalachee 33: Claire Carlson recorded 16 points, 6 assists and 6 steals. Mia Williams had 16 points and 3 steals. Emma Reynolds finished with 9 points and 2 assists.

No. 1 Hebron Christian 82, Discovery 12: JaKerra Butler (14), Jayden Watts (11) and Aubrey Beckham (10) all reached double digits.

No. 2 Lumpkin County 63, East Jackson 38: The Indians led 61-13 after three quarters. Averie Jones (16), Emmanuel-signee Kate Jackson (14), Emory-signee Mary Mullinax (13) and Ciera Brooks (13) powered the offense.

No. 10 Oconee County 33, Clarke Central 23: Macey Matthews dropped in 11 points.

No. 8 Banks County 63, Jackson County 16: Addison Hoard scored 13 points and Madison Adams netted 10. Emmie Chitwood (9), Ryleigh Murphy (8), Reese Murphy (6) and Carley Segars (5) balanced the attack.

Athens Academy 77, West Hall 12: India Sheats scored 17 points and Josie Collins tallied 11 points and 5 assists. Maddy Wicker posted 10 points and 8 rebounds. Adair Marvel tossed in 8 points.
