South Paulding 57, Central-Carrollton 52

Hot three-point shooting sprung South Paulding (2-0) to an early lead but Central-Carrollton (0-2) quickly rebounded and took a 23-21 lead into the half after the Spartans sank four of their 10 threes in the frame. Using a balanced attack, South Paulding regained control and pushed their lead to double digits midway through the second half as four different players netted threes. Jeremiah Taylor led South Paulding with 13 points, 4 rebounds, 3 assists, 1 steal and 1 block while Randy Harris (9) and David Williams (8) sank two threes apiece combining for 17 points. The Lions clawed back however, taking advantage of South Paulding’s young bench, turning to a frantic press. Khaven Cochran caught fire, drilling five threes, four coming in the second half helping Central-Carrollton trim the lead to 54-49 with 1:35 remaining. Cochran’s smooth stroke along with Isaiah West’s energy made things interesting, but the Spartans were able to make free throws and get stops down the stretch.

Mann, a 6-foot-4 junior, attacked the basket and finished with authority posting 15 points to lead all scorers. Jack Bourgeois was steady, adding 10 points while Keyshawn Dickey contributed 9 points. Dickey has a strong body, able to square his shoulders past the defender and convert through contact with either hand. Kennesaw Mountain received a team-high 8 points apiece out of Jake Whitaker and Hayden Hall, both netting a pair of threes but both scoring all their points in the first half. Elijah Ford provided athleticism on defense and started to look for his offense in the second half with a pair of drives.

With Jax Abernathy in a boot, others had to step up for Christian Heritage (1-1). Sophomores Isaac Plavich (15) and Dontae Crowder (13) did just that combining for 28 points. Plavich drilled three threes while Crowder used his physicality to get downhill. Crowder did a nice job using his strength to get his feet in the paint where he kicked out to open shooters while Plavich scorched the nets from beyond the arc. Cash Hare was his reliable self, collecting 13 points, 9 rebounds, 4 assists, 1 steal and 2 block, going 4-4 from the foul line in the second half. Union Grove White (0-2), rallied from down 31-20 at the half. Brandon Simmons showed an ability to hit tough shots in the lane but it was 6-foot-4 sophomore Caleb Samples that really posed mismatch problems. The versatile combo-forward has good length and athleticism. He’s effective on the glass, can score off the dribble and has a respectable jumper with three-point range. Samples scored at all three levels en route to 14 points, 5 rebounds, 1 assist, 2 steals and 2 blocks. On Sunday the Cardinals were without Akai Fleming, Justin McCarter and Keshawn McPherson. McPherson (26) and McCarter (16) combined for 42 points in Week 1, but Union Grove Black (2-0) was also not at full strength as Nile King was out of action after posting 23 points, 15 rebounds and 4 blocks last week. The Cardinals found themselves in unfamiliar territory at the half, trailing 32-23 as Tony Colley poured in 13 of his game-high 20 points in the first half. The bouncy 6-foot-3 wing sank three threes in the opening 20 minutes. Colley is an interesting sleeper with his athleticism and outside shooting. He’s a tough-nosed competitor on the glass, can defend multiple positions and pushes the ball well in transition. Colley along with Eric Garcia were up to the task battling Osborne inside. Garcia posted 18 points, 13 rebounds, 3 assists, 1 steal and 2 blocks. The 6-foot-3 forward provided a burst of energy, capable of scoring with his back to the basket and throwing down slams. As the two swingmen attacked Osborne, Kevin Hicks stepped into the limelight and kept the Cardinals alive. KJ poured in 20 points, getting into the paint with his floater and finishing with either hand.  Farrell Suber scored all 10 of his points in the second half while Nehemiah Stowers was steady throughout with 8 points. Aryelle King secured the rebound and race down the floor, hitting Amorie Strachan on the left block. Strachan went up for her initial attempt, but Laura Mitchell flew down for what looked like a game-saving block.
