In a thriller, East Paulding (3-0) rallied to beat the Woodstock Hawks (1-2), the Raiders’ only lead of the game coming on Carter Pengelly’s two free throws with 9.6 seconds left. The Hawks held a 24-12 halftime lead as Victor Julio scored seven of his game-high 10 points in a foul-ladened first half. In the second half, the physicality and intensity picked up even more as the Raiders went to their full court press. Amare Cooper made a big block, but got a technical foul. Though the foul hurt in the moment, it was from that point on where momentum swung in East Paulding’s favor. Minutes later, a double-technical was assessed and two players were ejected, one being Pau Verges, a key piece to the Hawks’ interior game. As East Paulding’s confidence swelled, Kalil Humphery did his best to stem the tide for the Hawks, finishing with 9 points. The Raiders finally drew even when Pengelly elevated to swat a shot that sparked a fastbreak leading to a Malkolm Mann putback with 31.5 seconds remaining. After Woodstock made one free throw, Mann was sent to the line with a chance to take the lead late but missed both free throws. Pengelly battled for the offensive rebound and was fouled which set up his game-winning free throws. Julio had a last second layup attempt altered at the rim by Mann, sealing the Raider win.
