Woodstock Hawks 51, Allatoona 49

A last second tip-in attempt from Landen Pitts after intentionally missing a free throw didn’t drop as the Woodstock Hawks (3-4) held on for a nerve-racking victory. Both teams shot lights out in the first half as the Hawks held a 32-24 lead, drilling six threes while Allatoona (1-6) nailed five. Victor Julio paced the Hawks with 14 points, hitting three of his four threes in the opening half. He and Levi Gonzalez combined for six threes and 24 points. Allatoona kept close behind Matthew McAuley’s 10 points, eight before halftime. The Buccaneers slowly chipped away in the second half and had the lead down to 46-44 with 3:11 to play. The Hawks would maintain a narrow advantage and lead 51-48 with 28.8 seconds remaining behind the strength of Kalil Humphery’s clutch free throw shooting. The senior would go 7-8 from the line over the final 20 minutes to keep the Hawks ahead. Pitts and Kellen Phillips kept the Bucs in striking distance scoring 13 points apiece. A Phillips three brought the score to 51-48 before Allatoona would get a steal. The Bucs had a three go halfway down before popping out and Pitts securing the rebound. He dribbled out to the three-point line and was fouled with 0.3 seconds left. He missed the first free throw, made the second and missed the third on purpose to set up a tip-in opportunity. Pitts controlled the ball with one hand in the air but hit nothing but backboard on the last-ditch effort.
