It is Sandy’s Spiel Showcase week – arguably the top girls-only event in the state of Georgia. Tickets are on sale for this Saturday at Grayson High School as the 16-team field features 13 ranked programs along with out of state power Hoover, AL, GIAA state champion Lakeview Academy and unranked yet undefeated Newton.
Class 6A No. 1 Carrollton retains their pole position after losing at Private No. 4 Holy Innocents’ 59-47 but bouncing back with a 69-62 win against Class 4A No. 5 Kell, Kaliyah Oliver scoring 17 points. No. 6 Grayson creeps up a spot with the addition of Coco Rudolph from Galloway, the D-I prospect scoring 22 points in her season debut against Heritage-Conyers. No. 10 Etowah topped Class A D-I No. 4 Temple 47-28 at the Wood Elite Showcase.
In Class 5A, No. 1 River Ridge thumped No. 10 Creekview 79-45, dropping the Grizzlies two spots. Kyla Cantey erupted for 24 points and 4 steals. No. 2 Langston Hughes made a pair of statements on the road, drilling No. 5 Morrow 80-49 before defeating Class 3A No. 8 Sandy Creek 56-50. No. 3 Woodward Academy suffered an 80-52 loss against Private No. 1 Hebron Christian. Sequoyah (4-4) drops out of the Top 10 with a 42-32 loss at Sprayberry. No. 8 Tri-Cities climbs back in with a 53-49 win over No. 9 Arabia Mountain.
The team to beat in Class 4A is No. 1 Creekside. The Seminoles fired an opening salvo in Region 4, defeating No. 2 Maynard Jackson 65-53 and No. 6 Midtown 65-49. C’India Dennis went for 28 points and 12 rebounds against the Jaguars then closed the week with 15 points, 8 rebounds, 11 assists and 8 steals vs. the Knights. No. 3 Marist beat No. 9 Northview 60-40 while No. 4 North Oconee swept Class 3A No. 6 Oconee County, beating the Warriors on the road in overtime 61-55 as Oklahoma softball-signee Kendall Wells posted 24 points and 10 rebounds. No. 5 Kell is up a spot after a tight loss to Class 6A No. 1 Carrollton 69-62, Kennedy Deese dropping 28 points. Dalton (3-2) falls out of the rankings with a 55-49 loss to Cartersville. No. 10 Southwest DeKalb returns to the poll with a 46-36 win against Class 2A No. 8 Columbia, freshman Jayla Walton netting 13 points along with Saniya Rice.
The top nine teams in Class 3A remain in the same order although multiple suffered losses. No. 1 Baldwin lost at the Tasha Tough Classic, beat by foil Private No. 4 Holy Innocents’ 64-53. No. 5 White County defeated No. 9 Cherokee Bluff 65-29 who was without Bristol Kersh. No. 6 Oconee County welcomed Emmanuel-signee Julie Azeltine back to the lineup but her 27-point effort wasn’t enough in a 61-55 overtime loss to Class 4A No. 4 North Oconee. No. 8 Sandy Creek fell 56-50 to Class 5A No. 2 Langston Hughes. Monroe (6-3) slips back out of the poll following a 46-43 loss at Lee County. No. 10 Dawson County makes their debut.
Class 2A No. 5 Murray County edged Marietta in overtime 63-60 at the Sandy’s Spiel Showdown as freshman Blaklee Ledford dumped in 19 points, 8 rebounds, 7 assists, 2 steals and 1 block while Bayleigh Winkler produced 18 points, 8 rebounds and 1 block. No. 6 Sonoraville jumps three spots with a pair of Top 10 wins, crushing Coahulla Creek (3-1) 69-42 to knock the Colts from the rankings and winning at No. 9 Union County 50-37 to push the Panthers down three spots after also losing 64-33 to Lakeview Academy at the Wood Elite Showcase. No. 8 Columbia fell 46-36 to Class 4A No. 10 Southwest DeKalb. Sneaking into the Top 10 for the first time is No. 10 Laney. The Wildcats toppled last week’s Class A D-I No. 7 Putnam County 57-54 before surviving at winless Hephzibah 59-57.
It was another week of mayhem in Class A D-I but the top two teams remain in place as No. 1 Model beat Bremen 45-38 and No. 2 Fannin County defeated Armuchee 56-45. No. 3 Central-Macon climbs two spots as Frances Anyakudo made her season debut against East Laurens (2-1) posting 11 points and 11 rebounds as the Lady Chargers won 42-34 to knock the Falcons out of the Top 10. No. 4 Temple holds onto their spot after a 47-28 loss at Class 6A No. 10 Etowah at the Wood Elite Showcase. No. 6 Rabun County tumbles three spots with a 52-26 loss at East Hall but did return AddyBeth Owens for her season debut. No. 10 Dodge County sinks four spots after losing to newly ranked No. 9 Bleckley County 54-49 but beating Putnam County (6-3) 48-45 to drop the War Eagles from the poll, Putnam County also losing at Class 2A No. 10 Laney 57-54. Bleckley County, now the fifth team from Region 2 to be ranked this season, has a gamechanger inside with 5-foot-11 freshman Ava Jenkins who already has a triple-double under her belt. Banks County (3-3) retreats from the Top 10 with a 52-48 loss at Morgan County. No. 7 Lamar County returns with a 58-35 win at Jackson while No. 8 Washington County does the same, back in after a 3-0 week highlighted by a 53-42 win over ACE.
There is a lot of shifting in Class A D-II. No. 1 Wilcox County remains atop their perch, but the Patriots did suffer a 56-50 loss to Lee County at the PRO South Georgia vs. Middle Georgia Classic. No. 4 Terrell County climbs two spots with a 43-40 win over newly ranked No. 9 Randolph-Clay. No. 6 Seminole County is up a pair of slots with a 37-34 win at Bainbridge while No. 7 Macon County moves up three positions with a 42-30 win against Bainbridge. Warren County (2-1) sinks from No. 3 to unranked with a 71-57 loss at Towns County. Clinch County (0-1) exits the poll after losing 48-41 in overtime to Cook. No. 10 Brooks County claims the final spot in the poll with a 54-36 victory over Cook.
In Class 3A-1A Private, No. 1 Hebron Christian thumped Class 5A No. 3 Woodward Academy 80-52 on the road. No. 4 Holy Innocents’ is hitting their stride, scoring a pair of wins against No. 1 ranked teams beating Class 6A No. 1 Carrollton 59-47 as Stanford-signee Hailee Swain scored 18 points and finally beating quasi-rival Class 3A No. 1 Baldwin 64-53 at the Tasha Tough Classic. No. 5 Galloway lost Coco Rudolph to Class 6A No. 6 Grayson, severely damaging their ceiling but did go 2-0 this past week. No. 9 GAC slips a spot with a 48-47 loss to Lumpkin County.
