Sandy’s Spiel Spring Showcase Registration

It was a wild week across the state as two classifications welcome new number one ranked teams. Getting deeper into region play, teams are finding out it is difficult to beat good programs multiple times.

The resume is too much to ignore in Class 6A for No. 1 North Paulding who regains the top spot after a two-week hiatus. The Wolfpack secured another marquee win, this time beating Private No. 3 Holy Innocents’ on the road 73-72. North Paulding has now beaten nine teams that have spent time in the Top 10 compared to No. 2 North Forsyth’s six. In terms of MaxPreps’ strength of schedule metric, the Wolfpack had posted a 17.3 mark compared to the Raiders’ 9.2 before counting North Paulding’s win over Holy Innocents’ who boasted a 19.2. No. 7 Campbell slips two spots with a 67-66 loss to Chattanooga Christian, TN at the 4Tha Culture MLK Classic. No. 8 Cherokee lost freshman Tracy Wakefield to Woodstock but still won at Walton 61-39. No. 9 Lowndes fell at the J4Sports Hardwood Queens Invitational to Class 4A No. 1 Creekside 65-57. No. 10 Buford received 35 points from Lydia Ledford in a 52-45 win at Southwest DeKalb.

In Class 5A, No. 1 River Ridge blew past No. 8 Creekview 70-40, Georgia Southern-signee Kayla Cleaveland posting 22 points, 9 rebounds, 3 assists and 4 steals. The Grizzlies rebounded with a 57-40 win at Etowah behind Anderson-signee Amilya Taft’s 23 points and 12 rebounds. No. 3 Woodward Academy topped No. 4 Milton 65-60 at the J4Sports Hardwood Queens Invitational, Kayla Whitner with 23 points, 7 rebounds, 3 assists and 4 steals, shooting 7-8 from three. No. 6 Tri-Cities swept Arabia Mountain (12-6) with a 61-55 road win, bouncing the Rams from the poll as Paris Shelton poured in 28 points. No. 10 New Manchester claws back into the rankings riding a four-game winning streak.

Class 4A No. 1 Creekside further illustrated they are the team to beat, pounding No. 6 Maynard Jackson 58-38 behind C’India Dennis’ 31-point, 15-rebound, 10-assist triple-double. The Seminoles tied the school record of 19-straight wins to open a season set back in 2000-01 by beating Class 6A No. 9 Lowndes 65-57 at the J4Sports Hardwood Queens Invitational. No. 4 Warner Robins remained perfect with a 52-40 win at Ware County while No. 8 Jones County fended off Veterans 49-43. No. 9 Dalton ripped off another 3-0 week, this time highlighted by wins at Cartersville 60-45 and against Calhoun 55-32, Aubriyana Camp dumping in 37 points against the Yellow Jackets. No. 10 Stockbridge loses ground following a 53-43 loss against Wheeler.

There is minor movement in Class 3A. No. 7 Oconee County swaps spots with No. 8 Cherokee Bluff after rallying past the Bears 57-51 in Flowery Branch behind Elizabeth Wynn’s triple-double of 14 points, 15 rebounds and 10 blocks. The Bears failed to bounce back, losing 70-58 at No. 3 Jefferson where Bristol Kersh (22) and Claire Carlson (19) combined for 41 points. No. 2 Fayette County lost All-State center Anaya Ferguson to an ACL/MCL tear earlier in the month but still managed to defeat No. 9 Sandy Creek 65-62 behind New York-signee Megan Ohonde’s 13 points, 17 rebounds, 3 steals and 3 blocks. No. 5 Pickens lost 53-46 at Dawson County but maintained their spot in the rankings thanks to a 56-36 win at Chestatee. No. 6 White County survived a nip-and-tuck affair with North Hall 52-45 while No. 10 Heritage-Catoosa avenged a blown loss against Northwest Whitfield, this time winning in Tunnel Hill 52-48 as Camdyn Carter drilled seven threes.

Class 2A has some major developments. No. 1 Thomson defeated No. 2 Josey 61-49 as Howard-signee Jada Kendrick dumped in 21 points, 7 rebounds, 5 assists, 2 steals and 2 blocks followed by Janiya Scott’s 18 points. No. 4 Murray County was upended at home by No. 6 Sonoraville 50-48 to split the season series by a total of six points, one of three ranked wins for the scorching hot Phoenix who also beat Union County (11-8) 60-34 and No. 10 Coahulla Creek 57-29. Union County drops out after losing 68-66 at Lakeview-Fort Oglethorpe, Christen Collins exploding for 40 points for the Warriors. No. 5 Hardaway hangs onto their spot ahead of Sonoraville due to a 62-43 win at newly ranked No. 9 Sumter County and a narrow 60-57 loss to Alabama juggernaut Hoover at the J4Sports Hardwood Queens Invitational. Sumter County crashes into the Top 10 with wins at Carver-Columbus 76-55 and against Spencer 44-38.

The carousel is in full spin after a wild week in Class A D-I. No. 1 Banks County has completed the climb from unranked to number one in a two-week span, jumping up five spots with a 61-48 win at Providence Christian but more importantly a decisive 52-36 win over No. 2 Elbert County to hand the Blue Devils their first loss and split the season series. No. 3 Central-Macon falls two spots after a shocking 32-20 loss at debutant No. 8 ACE who now represents the sixth team out of the 10-team Region 2 to have cracked into the Top 10 this season. No. 5 Model held off Temple 45-39 on the road as Javia Samples pitched in 14 points and freshman Kamri Sanders added 8 points and 9 rebounds. No. 6 Fannin County slips two spots to no fault of their own. The Rebels drilled Chattooga in Summerville 79-54 to seize control of Region 7. Something special is brewing at No. 7 Heard County, winners of 12-straight. The Baby Braves beat Bremen 60-46 before stunning Private No. 7 SACA to hand the Warriors their first loss, rallying from down 22 points to win in Atlanta 69-66. No. 10 East Laurens outlasted Dodge County in overtime 79-69 to stay ranked. Out of the poll is Putnam County (11-6), the War Eagles with two tough losses, beat at Private No. 7 SACA 55-43 then seeing a furious late rally fall short against Private No. 6 Greenforest 49-48, Journey Waller finishing with 21 points, 6 rebounds and 8 steals after Putnam actually led 23-15 at the half.

Class A D-II No. 1 Wilcox County flexed their muscle with a romp of No. 7 Telfair County 70-26, banishing the Trojans four spots after also losing 66-49 at Appling County. No. 6 Randolph-Clay knocked Calhoun County (11-6) out of the Top 10, beating the Cougars 43-40 after Calhoun County opened the week with a 36-34 loss to Pelham. No. 8 Metter breaks into the rankings following a 65-52 win over No. 9 Screven County to split the season series and force their way into a tie for first-place in Region 3 with No. 3 Bryan County who they hold a tiebreaker with after beating the Redskins 68-63 in the third game of the season setting up a critical rematch on Tuesday.

Don’t look now, but Class 3A-1A Private No. 2 St. Francis is making a legitimate case to usurp No. 1 Hebron Christian for the top spot. The Knights beat No. 4 Mt. Paran 72-64 and now play Class 5A No. 2 Langston Hughes on MLK Day, the lone team to beat Hebron Christian this season. No. 3 Holy Innocents’ fell 73-72 to Class 6A No. 1 North Paulding. No. 6 Greenforest won without a legitimate guard on the roster in a fascinating 49-48 win at last week’s Class A D-I No. 7 Putnam County as Milica Lazarevic was nowhere to be found as the Eagles had just six players on the bench. Marianah Achol posted 14 points, 12 rebounds and 7 blocks while Aminata Ndiaye had 11 points, 9 rebounds and 2 blocks. The Eagles trailed 23-15 at the half before building an eight-point lead with 2:56 to play, outscored 9-2 to close. No. 7 SACA beat Putnam County 55-43 but blew a 22-point lead and lost at home against Class A D-I No. 7 Heard County 69-66. No. 9 Athens Academy won at Providence Christian 65-55 while Trinity Christian (11-7) lost at East Coweta 65-55 to drop from the poll. No. 10 Calvary Day resurfaces with a 46-32 win at Jenkins.
