Class 7A powers garnered national headlines after a week full of Holiday Hoopsgiving, McEachern’s Thanksgiving Shootout, Hard in the Paint, Jared Cook Classic and more.

No. 1 Grayson survived a grueling week, highlighted by outlasting No. 5 Milton at the Jared Cook Classic 81-80 after trailing the entire game. Sophomore Bruce Thornton Jr. poured in 42 points for the Eagles but it was Mississippi State-signee Deivon Smith who sparked the comeback and willed Grayson to victory with 32 points, 7 rebounds, 3 assists and 3 steals. The Rams followed up the next day by beating Class 4A No. 2 Sandy Creek 62-55 as Smith (17) and Winthrop-signee Toneari Lane (15) led the way. At Holiday Hoopsgiving, the Rams picked up wins over Memphis East, TN 78-71 and Mountain Brook, AL 71-60. No. 2 McEachern defeated Mayfair, CA 87-79 before toying with Class 3A No. 4 Windsor Forest, whipping the Knights 99-75 as Auburn-signee Sharife Cooper hung 52 points, 13 rebounds and 10 assists. No. 3 Norcross held off Class A-Private No. 2 Greenforest 54-51 as Temple-signee Quincy Ademokoya scored 16 points. No. 4 Wheeler is up a spot after three ranked wins, beating Class 6A No. 8 Lanier (62-57), last week’s No. 8 Newton (72-66) and Class A-Private No. 1 St. Francis (67-64).  Out of the rankings is Newton (2-3) who also lost to Class 5A No. 3 Dutchtown 82-73. Surging into the poll is No. 7 Shiloh. The Generals made a statement at the Rotary Honor Air Classic, marching to the title after wins over Class 6A No. 7 Sequoyah (86-74), Class 6A No. 5 Chattahoochee (99-95) and Grady (83-52). Shiloh stayed hot on the big stage at Holiday Hoopsgiving, beating Webb, TN 57-55 and South Shore, NY 72-55. South Gwinnett transfer Zawdie Jackson has been the engine that has powered the Generals into the state picture.

No. 1 Tri-Cities represented Class 6A well in Arkansas at the Rumble on the Ridge, taking home the championship after beating North Little Rock 90-89. Peyton Daniels was named MVP after averaging 28.7 points capped by a 39-point performance in the title game, drilling nine threes. No. 2 Tucker edged Class 5A No. 5 Southwest DeKalb 68-60 while No. 3 South Cobb got 34 points from Zocko Littleton Jr. in an 89-73 win over Holy Innocents’. No. 8 Lanier teeters back and forth with another. 500 week. The Longhorns lost to Class 7A No. 4 Wheeler 62-57 but bounced back with a 77-58 win over Lambert as Andrew McConnell scored 21 points and Tulane-signee Sion James tallied 16 points, 7 rebounds and 7 assists.

There is some movement in Class 5A as No. 2 Lithonia jumps two spots after demolishing Bishop Snyder, FL 66-34 and Westside-Macon 89-45. No. 3 Dutchtown stays put after securing wins over Westlake (78-68) and Newton (82-73). No. 4 Kell is down two spots after losing to Class 7A No. 5 Milton 82-67. No. 8 Carrollton falls two more spots after a 60-51 loss to Class 4A No. 2 Sandy Creek, but with football season now over, expect 6-foot-6 UNCW-signee Melvin Edwards to make an immediate impact for the Trojans. Lithia Springs (1-2) exits the rankings after an idle week, leaving way for No. 10 Jones County. Buck Harris is off to a 6-0 start in his first year on the job, riding seniors Joseph Jackson (13.2 ppg) and Bryson Wooten (12.8 ppg, 4 rpg, 4.2 apg).

Class 4A No. 1 Woodward Academy went a perfect 4-0 out of state at the Tournament of Champions in Illinois. No. 2 Sandy Creek climbs one spot after a narrow loss to Class 7A No. 1 Grayson 62-55 and wins over Berkmar (65-52) and Class 5A No. 8 Carrollton (60-51). No. 5 Denmark stumbles three spots after an 83-79 loss to No. 7 Chapel Hill, who rises three places. Micah Bell poured in 32 points to pace the Panthers in the upset. No. 6 Cross Creek handled their business in South Carolina, going 4-0 at the Lake Murray Tip-Off to win the championship 59-57 over White Knoll, SC. 6-foot-6 Presbyterian-signee Kobe Stewart is averaging 20 points and 5.7 rebounds thus far.

From No. 3 to unranked, Central-Macon (1-1) free falls out of the Class 3A Top 10 after a 70-37 loss at Warner Robins. The Chargers won 74-66 at Northeast-Macon, but it wasn’t enough to save them from the drop. No. 4 Windsor Forest is up two spots after a 74-59 win over Savannah. No. 5 Hart County is also up two positions after tipping off their season with an 89-56 win over rival Elbert County. No. 6 Dawson County slides two spots following a hard-fought 67-62 loss to Cherokee in which Emmanuel-signee Jasper Gibson posted 22 points and 6 assists. No. 7 GAC won the Tabo’s Tip-Off Classic Championship, beating Winder-Barrow 44-43. No. 10 Jefferson is back down two spots after losing to Winder-Barrow 72-69 and to Class 7A No. 8 Archer, 94-68. Entering the Top 10 to replace the Chargers is No. 9 Beach. The Bulldogs are off to their best start since 2006-07.  Seniors Kevin Chaplin (16.3 ppg, 5 rpg, 2.7 apg, 2.3 spg), Kendrell Mitchner (11 ppg, 5.5 rpg) and Jalen Wright (10 ppg, 6 rpg) pace Beach.

Class 2A No. 1 Therrell keeps winning. They bested Class A-Private No. 4 Trinity Christian 68-57 and Durham Academy, NC 54-48. No. 3 Spencer completed a sweep of defending Class 4A state champion Carver-Columbus, 75-68. No. 4 Swainsboro started their season with wins over Jefferson County (69-53) and Statesboro (62-58). No. 7 Glenn Hills falls two spots after a 67-55 loss to Grovetown. No. 5 Banks County and No. 6 Douglass benefit from the Spartans’ loss. Long-time power South Atlanta (3-1) is out of the Top 10 while they wait for the return of All-State guard Ja’Quavian Florence. The Hornets barely beat 1-8 Stone Mountain 49-45 before falling to Douglas County 67-45. Replacing South Atlanta is No. 10 Laney, who scored a big 82-66 win over Evans.

In Class A-Private, No. 1 St. Francis and No. 2 Greenforest both suffered their first losses of the year at Holiday Hoopsgiving but stay put atop the rankings. Xavier-signee Dwon Odom had 20 points and 9 assists in a 67-64 loss to Class 7A No. 4 Wheeler. The difference maker? Former Knight Sam Hines (Denver), who posted 18 points and 13 rebounds in the win for the Wildcats. Greenforest lost 54-51 to Class 7A No. 3 Norcross, but got a 69-55 win over Hazelwood West, MO behind Drexel-signee Lamar Oden’s 27 points. No. 3 Walker won the Patriots Hoopsgiving Classic by beating North Cobb 61-57. No. 5 Mt. Pisgah cracks the Top 5 after beating Lovett in OT 60-52 and Meadowcreek 53-44. Holy Innocents’ (1-5) overscheduling has come back to bite them in the state rankings for a second straight year as their three-game losing streak now places them outside of the Top 10 and in jeopardy of seeding issues as many tough games are still on the horizon.  Losses to Class 6A No. 3 South Cobb (86-73) and Class 7A No. 5 Milton (66-39) have sealed their current fate as Chance Moore and Garrison Powell have not been able to manufacture wins. Reentering the poll is No. 10 Christian Heritage who beat Notre Dame, TN 52-51.

No. 4 Wilkinson County got on the right track in Class A-Public with wins over Northeast-Macon 42-36 and Hancock Central 64-61. No. 5 Lanier County sneaks up a spot after two blowout wins. No. 7 Macon County moves up two places following an 80-59 win at Peach County. No. 10 Greene County stills clings onto the final spot. The Tigers survived Putnam County 58-56.
