2025 Sandy’s Spiel Spring Showcase

In Class 6A, No. 1 Grayson survived Private No. 1 Holy Innocents’ 68-66. No. 2 Wheeler hosted the Georgia Nike Elite Showcase and throttled last week’s Class 5A No. 1 Milton 82-52. No. 3 McEachern knocked Hillgrove (15-6) from the Top 10 with a 67-43 win and won at the Nike Elite Showcase, beating No. 9 Norcross 55-45 behind Chase Lumpkin’s 21 points. Hillgrove also lost 49-43 at Campbell earlier in the week and have lost three of their last four to slide out of the rankings. No. 5 Etowah edged No. 4 Walton on the road 57-56, rallying from down 14 as Alex Young scored 11 of his team-high 18 points in the fourth quarter. No. 6 Newton beat Class 5A No. 3 Tri-Cities 69-65 at the MLK Dream Challenge while No. 8 Buford topped Private No. 5 Calvary Day 76-72 at the HIES MLK Classic behind Dillon Nixon’s 25 points. No. 10 Westlake debuts in the poll. The Lions crushed Class 2A No. 10 Spencer 86-53 at the MLK Showcase, beat Chapel Hill 65-61 and handled East Coweta 82-62.

There is a new number one in Class 5A as No. 1 Woodward Academy ascends to the top after wins against Shiloh (59-44) and Lakeside-DeKalb (66-47). No. 2 Milton loses their hold over the classification after an 82-52 loss at Class 6A No. 2 Wheeler at the Georgia Nike Elite Showcase. No. 3 Tri-Cities lost 69-65 to Class 6A No. 6 Newton at the MLK Dream Challenge. No. 4 Winder-Barrow escaped Alcovy 51-48, Jeremiah Shealey with 25 points. No. 8 Alexander helped drop Rome (15-5) from the rankings, beating the Wolves 61-42 on the road after Rome lost 64-30 at Class 4A No. 2 North Oconee. No. 10 Lee County climbs back into the poll with wins over Valdosta 57-40 and Thomas County Central 66-39.

Class 4A sees movement in the middle of the rankings. No. 1 Pace Academy defeated Pebblebrook 76-59 at the Georgia Nike Elite Showcase while No. 2 North Oconee destroyed last week’s Class 5A No. 10 Rome 64-30 at the North Oconee MLK Showcase, Justin Wise scoring 19 points.  No. 5 Central-Carrollton, No. 6 Jonesboro and No. 7 Tucker all move up a spot with a combined 5-0 week while No. 8 McDonough slides three spots with an 81-75 loss at Union Grove. No. 10 Maynard Jackson clings onto their position anchored by an 84-58 win over Class 3A No. 8 Windsor Forest at the MLK Dream Challenge before losing 70-64 to red-hot Mays who is knocking on the door of the Top 10 after also defeating Class 3A No. 4 Sandy Creek.

There are no changes in Class 3A. No. 2 Cross Creek completed a season sweep of No. 9 Westside-Augusta, beating the three-time defending state champs 67-59 on the road as Ty’Jai Heard scored 16 points. No. 4 Sandy Creek faltered against Mays 67-63 at MLK Dream Challenge while No. 7 Douglass was upset by Riverdale 61-60. No. 8 Windsor Forest was blasted at Class 4A No. 10 Maynard Jackson 84-58 at the MLK Dream Challenge.

In Class 2A, No. 2 Columbia went 2-1 at the Alaska Airlines Classic. No. 4 KIPP Atlanta slips a spot with a 57-39 loss at Private No. 1 Holy Innocents’ at the HIES MLK Classic. The Warriors were down 30 heading into the fourth quarter, struggling without leading scorer Quadarious Clemons (17.1 ppg) who last played December 14. In the loss, Akil Robinson led the Warriors with 16 points. No. 7 Union County suffered their fourth loss of the season, three coming against Top 5 private schools as No. 2 North Cobb Christian defeated the Panthers for the second time, 74-57. No. 10 Spencer hangs onto their spot after an 86-53 loss to Class 6A No. 10 Westlake at the MLK Showcase.

Thoughts and prayers go out to Cornelius Winfrey of No. 10 Towers in Class A D-I who seems to be in stable condition after a terrifying moment against Decatur. No. 2 Temple rises another spot with a 48-40 win at Darlington to sweep the regular season series. No. 3 BEST Academy defeated Mae Jemison, AL at Braggin’ Rights but lost 65-55 to Private No. 4 Walker. No. 6 East Laurens falls a spot with a 57-55 loss at No. 7 Dublin who climbs two slots.

Class A D-II remains unchanged as a handful of games were postponed due to the snow in South Georgia. No. 1 McIntosh County Academy won 50-38 at Jenkins County, No. 7 Macon County beat Perry 56-51 and No. 9 Trion scored wins over Bowdon (58-53) and Greenville (64-53).

It was a big week for Class 3A-1A Private No. 1 Holy Innocents’ five-star prospect Caleb Wilson, who announced his commitment to North Carolina on NBA on TNT. Wilson’s week started with a 57-39 win over Class 2A No. 4 KIPP Atlanta, dumping in 18 points, 10 rebounds, 2 assists, 2 steals and 8 blocks in three quarters of work while Khalid Worthy posted 19 points, 18 rebounds, 4 steals and 2 blocks. The future Tar Heel closed his week with a 68-66 loss at Class 6A No. 1 Grayson, filing away 28 points, 12 rebounds and 6 blocks in the star-studded matchup. No. 2 North Cobb Christian got 25 points and 10 rebounds from Brock Bass-Bonner, 18 points and 8 assists from Grant Robich and 16 points, 23 rebounds and 4 blocks from Xavier Butler in a 74-57 win over Class 2A No. 7 Union County. No. 4 Walker is the hottest team in the classification, shooting up five spots with three ranked wins this past week. The Wolverines beat No. 9 Lovett 67-58 at the HIES MLK Classic as Xavier Berry tallied 21 points and Lorenzo McCorvey had 12 as Anderson Carey did not play for the Wolverines while Jack Rees missed the matchup for Lovett who saw Cameron Cannon score 28. Carey returned to action against No. 8 Paideia dropping 25 points in a 70-60 win before netting 16 to led the Wolverines past Class A D-I No. 3 BEST Academy 65-55 on the road. No. 5 Calvary Day lost 76-72 to Class 6A No. 8 Buford at the HIES MLK Classic as Kuol Deng collected 22 points and 11 rebounds.
