Two number one ranked teams suffered losses this week but hold onto their top spots as early season showcases continue to help shape the state picture.Class 7A sees some interesting changes. No. 1 Grayson holds firm after knocking off last week’s Class 6A No. 2 Woodward Academy 78-66 at the OTR Tip-Off Classic. Purdue-commit Gicarri Harris netted 23 points while Amir Taylor added 15. No. 2 McEachern bounced back at the Hawks-Naismith Classic, defeating Class 5A No. 1 Kell 81-65. Rutgers-signee Ace Bailey piled in 31 points, 14 rebounds, 2 assists, 1 steal and 1 block. No. 4 Berkmar moves up a spot after toppling Central Gwinnett 64-46 at the OTR Tip-Off Classic, receiving 19 points from Mekhi Ragland. No. 5 Newton slips a position following a 69-49 loss to No. 3 Wheeler at Hawks-Naismith. Kennesaw State-signee Ricky McKenzie and Jacob Taylor scored 11 points apiece to pace the Wildcats while Belmont-signee Jabez Jenkins netted a game-high 20 points for Newton. No. 8 Walton is up two spots following an explosive week which saw the Raiders destroy Sequoyah (93-34) and Miller Grove (80-44). JP Wells went 8-10 from beyond the arc, erupting for 29 points in the demolition of the Chiefs. Milton (0-1) drops out of the Top 10 with a 65-44 loss to No. 9 Archer at the Jared Cook Classic. The Tigers crash into the poll behind Wofford-signee Khamare Holmes’ 23 points. Norcross (0-3) tumbles out of the rankings, their first 0-3 start since 2011-12. The Blue Devils were upset at Brookwood 64-62 before losing at OTR against Class 6A No. 2 Shiloh, 74-65. No. 10 Mountain View climbs into the Top 10 with wins over Parkview (49-48) and Providence Christian (82-72), beating the Storm at the Jared Cook Classic.
In Class 6A, No. 1 Alexander defeated Class 5A No. 8 Tri-Cities 76-66 at the Powder Springs Showcase, Kennesaw State-commit Braedan Lue with 21 points, 15 rebounds and 6 assists followed by Allen Stoddard’s 20 points. No. 2 Shiloh vaults up four spaces with their 74-65 win at last week’s Class 7A No. 9 Norcross at the OTR Tip-Off Classic. Tylis Jordan collected 28 points, 8 rebounds and 3 blocks while Jullien Cole netted 24 points. No. 4 Woodward Academy falls two spots after losing 78-66 to Class 7A No. 1 Grayson at the OTR Tip-Off Classic, Zac Foster and Brandon Peters with 19 points each. No. 5 Jonesboro holds firm in the middle of the poll after a 53-47 loss at Class 5A No. 2 Eagle’s Landing. The Cardinals hung tough with the Eagles even with seven players missing including three starters and top guards Montez and Cortez Redding. No. 6 St. Pius X lost 63-60 to Class 4A No. 3 Holy Innocents’ and 57-52 at the Hawks-Naismith Classic to Class 4A No. 7 Fayette County, Aiden Portee powering the Golden Lions with 18 points, 7 rebounds and 5 steals. No. 7 Lakeside-Evans won at Harlem 56-51 while No. 9 Langston Hughes fell to Class 4A No. 1 Pace Academy at OTR 67-54. Lanier (0-2) is out of the rankings following a 70-63 loss to Parkview at OTR, Amari Morgan with a game-high 27 points. No. 10 South Cobb surfaces with wins over New Manchester (66-63) and Westlake (66-52).
Class 5A No. 1 Kell lost to Class 7A No. 2 McEachern 81-65 at the Hawks-Naismith Classic, South Florida-signee CJ Brown with 18 points ad 8 rebounds in the loss. No. 2 Eagle’s Landing took advantage of a barebones Class 6A No. 5 Jonesboro, 53-47. No. 3 Maynard Jackson won at Trinity Christian 64-60 while No. 4 Dutchtown defeated East Coweta at the Powder Springs Showcase. No. 7 Union Grove scooped up a pair of wins over Woodland-Stockbridge (82-68) and Griffin (62-46). No. 8 Tri-Cities lost at the Powder Springs Showcase to Class 6A No. 1 Alexander 76-66. Freshman Tre Keith scored 22 points in the loss while Jalan Wingfield’s status remains in limbo after moving over from Thomas County Central. No. 9 Warner Robins won at Houston County 76-73 behind Camryn Perkins’ 27 points. Hiram (0-2) plummets out of the poll, dropping from No. 5 to unraked after losses to Marietta 61-52 and Meadowcreek 77-56. No. 10 Tucker climbs into the rankings at 2-1, losing 64-61 at Class 4A No. 3 Holy Innocents’ at the Hawks-Naismith Classic, Josiah Lawson bringing his career scoring total to 999 points after dropping 32 points and 8 rebounds in the loss.
At the OTR Tip-Off Classic, Class 4A No. 1 Pace Academy dispatched of Class 6A No. 9 Langston Hughes 67-54 behind Chandler Bing (18) and Chicago-signee LJ Moore (15). No. 2 McDonough soared past Etowah 77-56 at the Powder Springs Showcase, Keenan Gray pouring in 31 points. No. 3 Holy Innocents’ had a great week, beating Class 6A No. 6 St. Pius X 63-60 and Class 5A No. 10 Tucker 64-61 at Hawks-Naismith. Over the two-game span, five-star 6-foot-10 junior Caleb Wilson averaged 23 points, 16 rebounds, 7 assists and 5 blocks. No. 6 Walnut Grove scored a 66-54 win over Pebblebrook at OTR as Marcus Smith II netted 19 points and Chase Roux added 16. No. 7 Fayette County rises two spots with a 57-52 win over Class 6A No. 6 St. Pius X at Hawks-Naismith, Keith Gillespie (26) and Christian McAllister (17) combining for 43 points. After beating Dunwoody 77-70, No. 9 Seckinger suffered a 75-73 loss to TL Hanna (SC) at the Jackson EMC Thanksgiving Tournament. Benedictine (0-0) slides out of the poll due to inactivity and is replaced by No. 10 Westover who holds wins over Class 3A No. 5 Dougherty (51-46) and Colquitt County (59-30).
Class 3A No. 1 Sandy Creek came from behind to beat Class A D-I No. 1 Mt. Vernon 57-54 at the OTR Tip-Off Classic as Jared White buried a go-ahead three with two seconds left. Amari Brown scored a game-high 19 points. No. 2 Douglass slept-walked their way past winless North Springs, using a 24-13 fourth quarter to escape 69-57. No. 4 Cross Creek saw four players reach double figures led by Kylen Clark’s 14 points in their 64-57 win over Grovetown. No. 5 Dougherty handled No. 8 Johnson-Savannah 66-49 at the Titletown Tip-Off Classic, rising a spot and dropping the Atomsmashers three places as Kaleke Singletary-Jinks powered the Trojans with 23 points while Joshua Quarterman battled foul trouble and netted 23 of his own for Johnson-Savannah. No. 6 Hebron Christian jumps three spots with a clean week featuring wins over Discovery 61-38 and Whitefield Academy 80-44. Calvary Day (0-1) sinks out of the Top 10 with a 62-44 loss to Class A D-I debutant No. 8 Woodville-Tompkins. No. 9 Richmond Academy is off to a hot start, ripping off wins over Evans (57-50), Josey (81-57) and Class 2A No. 4 Southwest-Macon at the Ricky Moore Invitational 62-52 behind Justin Mims’ 25 points.
Defending two-time Class 2A state champion No. 2 Westside-Augusta roared past Augusta Christian at the Ricky Moore Invitational, 93-59. No. 3 Butler suffered a 50-45 loss to Jones County while No. 4 Southwest-Macon fell to Class 3A No. 9 Richmond Academy 62-52, both games at the Ricky Moore Invitational. Both teams remain secure within their spots due to inactivity directly below them in the poll. No. 8 ELCA debuts in the Top 10, taking the place of Walker (0-1) after beating the Wolverines 59-57 on the road.
Class A D-I will see heavy movement throughout the season with a parity-laden field outside of No. 1 Mt. Vernon who fell to Class 3A No. 1 Sandy Creek 57-54 at OTR, West Georgia-commit Xavier Shegog collecting 17 points, 12 rebounds and 4 assists in the defeat. No. 6 Paideia sinks three spots with a winless week, losing to Decatur (64-61), Wilson Academy (63-26) and Clarke Central (73-67). Coach George Brown secured his first career victory, leading No. 3 Savannah past Beach 64-45 as Maki Joyner pumped in 27 points, 8 rebounds, 4 assists and 3 steals. No. 4 King’s Ridge climbs three spots with a 78-75 win against Rabun Gap, Jaydon Cole netting 22 points. No. 5 St. Francis sticks in place after splitting with a pair of non-GHSA teams, losing 76-71 at undefeated Creekside Christian and winning against Arlington Christian 84-65 behind Greg Howard’s 22 points, 7 rebounds and 6 assists. Mt. Pisgah (1-2) is out of the rankings after losing 80-74 to Centennial at the Roswell Rotary Veterans Appreciation Invitational. Swainsboro (0-0) departs due to inactivity. No. 7 Mt.
