Though it’s incredibly early, a few teams have begun separating themselves as contenders and pretenders. A busy holiday tournament schedule will pit Top 10 teams against each other as programs prep for region play.

Class 7A is undergoing a rehaul with two new teams cracking the Top 10. No. 1 Brookwood took down Class 6A No. 2 Lovejoy 54-51 behind Ohio State-signee Diana Collins’ 14 points, 4 assists and 3 steals. No. 3 Norcross got 23 points from Jania Akins in a 63-59 win over Class A D-I No. 1 Galloway and saw new additions Veronaye Charlton (18) and Mariyah Valrie (12) combine for 30 points. No. 4 Carrollton rises after trouncing Class 4A No. 9 Southwest DeKalb 59-35 at Girls Night Out. No. 6 Peachtree Ridge beat Class 5A No. 8 Union Grove 44-34 while No. 10 Hillgrove slipped a spot after losing 74-57 at Class 4A No. 1 Holy Innocents’. South Forsyth (1-2) and Cherokee (1-2) drop out. The War Eagles were beat 77-65 by No. 2 Archer and were upset by North Paulding 58-50 at the Gladiator Showcase, tumbling all the way from No. 4 to unranked. Cherokee is a victim of a tough schedule, losing to Class 6A No. 1 River Ridge 64-38 and Class 3A No. 1 Lumpkin County 65-53 at the Sandy’s Spiel Tip-Off Classic, hitting 11 threes in the loss and receiving 16 points, 6 rebounds, 2 assists and 2 steals from freshman Lyla Griffith. No. 7 McEachern debuts after Jada Bates scored 17 points in the Indians’ 43-34 win over Class 5A No. 10 GAC at the Parkview Tip-Off Classic. No. 8 Campbell opened the year with a tough 61-57 loss to Class 6A No. 2 Lovejoy and has subsequently rolled past Stephenson (55-28) and Chamblee (67-25) to make it into the Top 10.

No. 1 River Ridge is off to a quick start in Class 6A, beating last week’s Class 7A No. 8 Cherokee 64-38 and dissecting Class 3A No. 6 Carver-Columbus’ press at Girls Night Out, 77-41 as Kayla Cleaveland scored 17 points and Allie Sweet added 16. No. 2 Lovejoy holds tight following a 54-51 loss to Class 7A No. 1 Brookwood. No. 3 Rockdale County sent a statement, annihilating No. 10 Brunswick 96-56, sinking the Pirates six spots. Danielle Carnegie (24), Tre’Miyah Berry (20), Lia Edwards (16), Mariyah Moore (11) and Nylah Williams (11) overwhelmed Brunswick. No. 4 North Forsyth climbs two spots with a win over Dutchtown 72-43 at the Raider Classic. The middle of the poll disintegrated last week with four teams losing. No. 5 Woodward Academy lost 62-56 at Class 4A No. 2 Griffin, but moves up three spots after rebounding with a 74-56 win over Class 4A No. 6 Westminster at Hawks-Naismith, Kameron Herring dropping 24 points and 8 rebounds. No. 6 New Manchester scored three wins, all on the road beating Class 5A No. 6 Hiram 46-42, Pebblebrook 58-54 and last week’s Class 3A No. 9 Monroe 54-43 at Girls Night Out, climbing three spots in the poll. No. 7 Forest Park is down two slots following a 55-37 loss to Class 3A No. 1 Hebron Christian at the Parkview Tip-Off Classic. No. 9 Langston Hughes was blown out at home by Class 5A No. 1 Kell, 75-50 dropping two spots. Woodstock (1-3) is a casualty following an 0-3 week as they await the return of their suspended starters. The Wolverines lost to Class 4A No. 8 East Forsyth (62-43), Pope (48-30) and Johns Creek (53-49). No. 8 Rome surfaces in the rankings after a 64-44 win over West Forsyth at the Raider Classic. The Lady Wolves graduated a big chunk from last year’s team but return 5-foot-10 junior Breana Griffin and welcome 5-foot-10 sophomore Jermiya Winston back home after she moved to Cass for her freshman year and was a First Team All-Region selection.

Class 5A No. 1 Kell had no issue with last week’s Class 6A No. 7 Langston Hughes winning 75-50 on the road, Jada Peterson netting 24 points and Crystal Henderson dumping in 23. No. 2 Warner Robins rallied past last week’s Class 4A No. 2 Baldwin 51-47 at the HypeSouth Hardwood Invitational, South Carolina State-signee Jada Morgan scoring a game-high 14 points to help erase a 17-point deficit. No. 4 Maynard Jackson climbs six spots after routing a shorthanded No. 5 Northside-Columbus, who sinks two spots following a 63-26 defeat. No. 10 GAC also slips a spot after losses to Class 4A No. 6 Westminster (53-47) and Class 7A No. 7 McEachern (43-34) with a win over last week’s Class 4A No. 10 Trinity Christian (60-32) sandwiched in between.

The top of Class 4A may be a tight race throughout the season. No. 1 Holy Innocents’ holds onto their spot after beating Class 7A No. 10 Hillgrove 74-57 but losing to a barebones Class 3A No. 3 Wesleyan at Hawks-Naismith, 62-59. Riley Black dominated with 29 points, 13 rebounds, 2 assists and 5 steals. No. 8 East Forsyth lost West Georgia-signee Alison Hiddema to an ACL tear but managed to split this week, beating a shorthanded Woodstock 62-43 and falling to Rabun Gap 67-54.  No. 9 Southwest DeKalb couldn’t keep pace with Class 7A No. 4 Carrollton 59-35 at Girls Night Out. Trinity Christian (0-1) exits the poll following a 60-32 loss at Class 5A No. 10 GAC. No. 10 North Hall marks the third team from Region 8 to appear in the rankings. Johanna Potter led the charge with 20 points while freshman Shayla Bahr scored 14 points and Chit-Chat Wright recorded 14 points, 10 rebounds and 6 assists. No. 5 Pickens slides up a spot with a 54-40 win over Class 2A No. 5 Fannin County at the ETC Tournament. No. 6 Carver-Columbus drops, hammered by Class 6A No. 1 River Ridge 77-41 at Girls Night Out. No. 7 White County is up a spot after beating Habersham Central 59-50 and dispatching of a shorthanded Class 2A No. 7 Banks County at the Sandy’s Spiel Tip-Off Classic 51-29, Claire Beckman scoring 14 points and Kylie Watkins double-doubling with 11 points and 11 rebounds. Without their double-double machine the Leopards have managed a 3-1 record, beating East Hall twice and crushing Jackson County 63-16. The Leopards fell to Class 3A No. 7 White County at the Sandy’s Spiel Tip-Off Classic 51-29 while missing two starters.  Murray County (0-1) sinks from the Top 10 after losing 65-60 to Northwest Whitfield at the Ridgeland Thanksgiving Classic.
