 Great tournaments have shifted the state rankings as events such as the Carrollton’s Girls Night Out, Parkview Tip-Off Classic, Dacula Tip-Off Classic, Tabo’s Tip-Off Classic and the GetMickey Raider Classic have pitted heavyweights against each other, giving programs a true early season litmus test to see where they are at.

The top 3 in Class 7A stand head and shoulders above the rest of the field currently as No. 1 Westlake and No. 3 Cherokee continue to carve up the competition while travel ball constructed No. 2 Collins Hill still awaits their first game. The Lions blasted last week’s Class 6A No. 8 Langston Hughes 76-37 while the Lady Warriors romped Class 6A No. 6 Creekview 58-37 at the GetMickey Raider Classic. No. 5 North Cobb redeemed themselves with a 51-32 statement victory at No. 6 Pebblebrook to move up four spots. No. 10 McEachern falls six spots after No. 9 North Paulding, who is ranked for the first time in school history, smacked the Indians at home 50-35 as CTC Fall League MVP 5-foot-9 sophomore Aliyah Washington dominated with 16 points. Tumbling out of the poll is Grayson (1-2), who suffered a 66-47 loss to Class 5A No. 1 Buford at the Dacula Tip-Off Classic. Keep an eye on No. 8 Campbell. The young Spartans knocked off last week’s Class A-Private No. 7 Greenforest 55-47 at the Carrollton’s Girls Night Out.

No. 3 Valdosta is proving its ranking early on in Class 6A. The Wildcats edged Class 5A No. 3 Luella 52-47 at the Dacula Tip-Off Classic as 6-foot-3 freshman Essence Cody broke out with 15 points, 18 rebounds, 4 assists, 2 steals and 9 blocks. No. 8 Stephenson moves up two positions after a 61-58 win over Class A-Private No. 5 Mt. Paran at the Parkview Tip-Off Classic. No. 5 Dacula defeated Class 4A No. 6 Flowery Branch 58-45 behind Nyla Rose-Moore’s 21 points, 8 rebounds and 4 steals. Langston Hughes (1-2) exits the rankings after losing to Class 7A No. 1 Westlake 76-37 before beating last week’s Class 5A No. 10 Starr’s Mill 58-45. The Panthers are replaced by No. 10 Harrison who won 66-50 at Sequoyah and ousted Woodland-Stockbridge from the 5A poll with a 45-27 win.

Class 5A looks a little uncertain, but the two constants so far have been No. 1 Buford and No. 2 Carrollton. The Wolves devoured No. 8 Eagle’s Landing 78-64 and drilled last week’s Class 7A No. 8 Grayson 66-47 at the Dacula Tip-Off Classic. Carrollton blitzed Class A-Public No. 1 Greenville 74-35 at their Girls Night Out event. No. 6 Veterans falls three spots after taking a 65-48 loss against Class 2A No. 4 Putnam County. No. 3 Villa Rica climbs two spots with a 44-32 win over Class 2A No. 10 Rockmart. Woodland-Stockbridge (0-1) and Starr’s Mill (2-3) depart from the Top 10. Woodland lost 45-27 to Harrison while the Panthers fell against Class 5A No. 2 Spalding 43-32 and Langston Hughes 58-45. Into the poll are No. 9 Southwest DeKalb and No. 10 Kell. The Panthers beat Clarkston 73-11 while Kell marks the third team from Region 7 to enter the rankings after beating Class 7A No. 5 North Cobb 51-45 back on November 16. A slew of freshmen led by Crystal Henderson powers the new-look Longhorns.

There is no movement among the top 3 in Class 4A but below them, nearly everything has changed. No. 4 Druid Hills is up two more spots after holding off Class 3A No. 6 Lumpkin County 42-40 at the Tabo’s Tip-Off Classic, Kyia Craft going for 20 points, 6 rebounds and 6 steals while Natalie Martin added 12 points and 5 rebounds. Fellow Region 4 frontrunner, No. 5 Woodward Academy climbs three spots after blasting both Eastside (82-50) and Paideia (85-46). The duo of Sydney Bowles and Kai Lanier went berserk against Paideia, combining for 70 points, 22 rebounds, 10 assists and 21 steals. No. 7 Troup County is up three places after a nice start to their season, scoring two road wins against Harris County (63-36) and Heard County (69-32).

In Class 3A, the latest installment of No. 1 Johnson-Savannah vs. No. 3 Beach resulted in the Atomsmashers winning 60-57, riding Beach transfer and Tampa-signee Jaida Burgess to 17 points and 10 steals. No. 4 Dawson County is up two spots after rebounding from a 55-40 loss to Class 4A No. 6 Flowery Branch to beat Madison County 69-55. No. 9 Sonoraville plummets five spots after losing their season-opener to Gilmer 62-56.  No. 6 Lumpkin County moves up four positions thanks to wins over Chestatee (48-27) and Banks County (53-44) before a hard-fought loss to Class 4A No. 4 Druid Hills 42-40. Just like last season, tough scheduling has put No. 8 GAC in a tricky predicament as far as the rankings go. Now sitting at 1-5, four of the Spartans’ five losses have come against ranked opponents while their lone unranked loss came against 4-0 Trinity Christian 52-45. GAC also lost to Class A-Private No. 3 Holy Innocents’ 60-54 and Class A-Private No. 2 Hebron Christian 59-31 this past week. The Spartans remain a dangerous team in Class 3A and have played the hardest schedule by far, but it will need to pay off more than it did last year as a Sweet 16 exit won’t be good enough this season.

Class 2A is still sorting itself out as No. 1 Early County remains on top even after suffering a 53-50 loss to 4-0 Class 7A Colquitt County. No. 2 Laney got back into the win column, beating Butler 56-47. No. 7 Bryan County is down three spots after challenging themselves in non-region play. The Redskins lost to Richmond Hill 50-39 and at Class 5A No. 5 Statesboro 55-38. No. 4 Putnam County shoots up four spots following a huge 65-48 win over Class 5A No. 6 Veterans at the Houston County/Bibb County Shootout. No. 9 Southwest-Macon defeated Warner Robins 47-41.

The margin for error among the top four is razor thin in Class A-Private. No. 3 Holy Innocents’ is down one spot after losing to national power Ensworth, TN 73-60. Before the loss, the Golden Bears beat Class 3A No. 9 GAC 60-54. Up to the second spot is No. 2 Hebron Christian. The Lions have been relentless in their pursuit of altering the Class A-Private landscape. Their latest victim was GAC, who they mauled 59-31 behind Malia Fisher’s 23 points and 13 rebounds. No. 4 Wesleyan is trying to keep pace. They picked up a 51-42 win over Norcross. No. 5 Mt. Paran handled No. 9 Galloway 61-39, but lost to Class 6A No. 8 Stephenson 61-58 at the Parkview Tip-Off Classic. No. 7 Calvary Day is up two spots following a 54-42 win at Class 5A No. 5 Statesboro. Greenforest (2-3) falls from the poll after losing to returnee No. 10 ELCA 65-62 and to Class 7A No. 8 Campbell, 55-47.

There is no movement in Class A-Public as No. 1 Greenville maintains its hold after a 74-35 loss to Class 5A No. 2 Carrollton followed a 54-47 win at Monroe. No. 2 Wheeler County is rolling, scoring easy wins over Atkinson County (71-30), McIntosh County Academy (76-24) and Hawkinsville (60-37). No. 5 Central-Talbotton saw All-State forward Bernyla Sparks drop 38 points in a 75-39 win over Jordan.
