The Hawks-Naismith Holiday Classic provided nationwide implications in Class 7A.

No. 1 Grayson, after getting stunned by re-entry No. 10 Newton 84-80 on the road in overtime after Newton rallied from down double digits to force overtime hitting 14 threes along the way, rebounded with a 60-55 win on the road to help knock Archer (8-4) from the polls. The grueling Region 8 stretch was just a warmup however as on Saturday night in front of a capacity crowd at Norcross for the Hawks-Naismith Holiday Classic, the Rams led wire-to-wire in a destruction of nationally ranked No. 4 McEachern 83-57, dropping the Indians three spots. Auburn-signee Sharife Cooper was harassed into 6-23 shooting for 17 points and 8 assists while attempting just four free throws. Grayson outrebounded the Indians 45-27 and saw 6-foot-7 junior Ian Schieffelin post a triple-double with 13 points, 10 rebounds and 11 blocks. USF-signee Caleb Murphy had 24 points and 7 rebounds while Mississippi State-signee Deivon Smith tallied 17 points, 9 rebounds, 7 assists, 1 steal and 2 blocks. Winthrop-signee Toneari Lane chipped in 17 points and 7 rebounds in the rout. While McEachern flopped on the big stage, host school No. 2 Norcross held off Class 6A No. 2 Tucker 72-63 as Temple-signee Quincy Ademokoya drilled seven threes en route to 27 points. JT Thor had 15 points and 12 rebounds. No. 7 East Coweta slips two spots following a 61-59 loss to No. 8 Pebblebrook, who bounces back into the poll after also avenging an earlier loss to Class 6A No. 6 Chattahoochee, winning the rematch at the Hawks-Naismith Holiday Classic 67-55 using a 13-0 run to start the fourth quarter to blow the game open. Jamall Clyce was outstanding with 25 points and 3 blocks while Kaleb Washington tacked on 17 points. Peachtree Ridge (8-3) joins Archer outside the rankings. The Lions lost to Collins Hill (79-71) and newly ranked Class 5A No. 9 Walnut Grove (61-59.) Archer lost 65-60 at No. 5 Shiloh before their losses to Grayson and Stephenson (62-61).

No. 1 Tri-Cities remains unblemished in Class 6A after winning at No. 9 New Manchester 85-76 and going 2-0 at the Southern States Classic against Rutherford, FL (80-72) and Crossroad Academy, FL (104-73). Terrence Edwards exploded for 36 points, 11 rebounds, 2 assists and 3 steals, but No. 2 Tucker still fell to Class 7A No. 2 Norcross 72-63 at the Hawks-Naismith. No. 6 Chattahoochee falls two spots after their 67-55 loss to Class 7A No. 8 Pebblebrook. No. 5 Pope finally leapfrogs the Cougars after already beating them 67-61 in November. No. 10 Richmond Hill is down two places following a 54-48 loss to New Hampstead.

In Class 5A, No. 2 Lithonia won at Columbia 65-56 before surviving Pinson Valley, AL at Braggin’ Rights 71-68 in overtime.   No. 4 Hiram swaps places with No. 5 Kell after beating the Longhorns 75-60 without top scorers Scooter Henderson and Najhae Colon who were serving suspensions. Miller Grove (8-4) and Carrollton (3-4) exit the poll. The Wolverines lost 50-47 to Southwest DeKalb and inexcusably to 2-7 Cedar Grove 56-52. Carrollton fell 84-77 in overtime at Cass.  Region 8 charges into the rankings to give them three teams in the Top 10 as debutant No. 9 Walnut Grove and returnee No. 10 Buford join No. 6 Cedar Shoals. Under first-year Head Coach Will Witherspoon, the Warriors of Walnut Grove are off to their best start in years at 8-0. A 61-59 win over last week’s Class 7A No. 9 Peachtree Ridge at the Gwinnett Daily Post Metro Atlanta Challenge green lights Walnut Grove’s arrival. Speaking of green lights, Sebastian Augustave had one in Buford’s 78-63 win over Class A-Private No. 9 Wesleyan at the Hawks-Naismith, drilling 10-16 three-pointers on his way to 33 points, 4 rebounds and 4 assists. The little lefty paced the Wolves as they shot 14-23 from beyond the arc. Caleb Williams chipped in 16 points, 7 rebounds and 6 assists.

No. 1 Woodward Academy ran out of gas in a 61-59 loss to Jemison, AL at Braggin’ Rights, but maintain their hold on the top spot in Class 4A.  Falling out of the poll are North Clayton (4-3) and Baldwin (4-3). The Eagles sink from No. 4 to unranked after losses to region foes newly ranked No. 8 Salem 72-69 and McDonough 75-58.  Baldwin fell at Class A-Public No. 6 Wilkinson County 78-63. No. 9 Howard jumps back into the poll following a 2-1 week. No. 3 Eastside scored a 72-57 win over Salem. No. 10 Marist is on the verge of dropping out after losses to Blessed Trinity (48-44) and Class 3A No. 9 Lovett 68-61.

There is major shakeup in Class 3A as Westside-Macon (5-6) and Long County (7-2) depart while upsets near the top of the poll shift the survivors. The Seminoles have not been good this year, losing 57-53 at Peach County before Class 7A No. 3 Milton trashed them 84-47 at Hawks-Naismith. Long County had a slim margin of error playing a weaker schedule and they couldn’t survive the target on their back, losing 74-61 at Metter. No. 9 Lovett and No. 10 Cherokee Bluff enter the rankings. 6-foot-10 junior Ryan Mutombo has had a breakout season and has dominated inside with multiple games of 40+ points. He had 41 in an 83-73 double-overtime win at St. Pius X before finishing with 22 points in a 68-61 win over Class 4A No. 10 Marist. Cherokee Bluff cracks the Top 10 for the first time in school history. The Bears have played a challenging schedule and have no bad losses. A devastating injury to blossoming 6-foot-7 post Corey Thomas hasn’t slowed their momentum. They just beat East Hall (83-44) and Fannin County (61-54) and now face a test at GAC this Thursday. The biggest upset in the state came with last week’s No. 2 ranked team, No. 6 Windsor Forest, losing to Benedictine 57-56 dropping the Knights four spots. No. 7 Monroe is down three spots after a 45-40 loss at Lee County. No. 3 Hart County climbs two spots after a perfect week highlighted by a 79-58 win at Monroe Area. No. 4 Dawson County moves up two positions while No. 5 Franklin County does the same after Titus Brown (21), Keylan Rutledge (20) and Micah Roebuck (18) combined for 59 points in a 71-63 win over Jefferson. At the top of the heap, No. 1 Pace Academy drilled No. 8 Westminster 60-32 behind Matthew Cleveland’s 21 points, 15 rebounds and 4 assists.

In Class 2A, No. 1 Therrell defeated returnee No. 8 Douglass 50-42 before losing 82-73 to Huntsville, AL at Braggin’ Rights. The most interesting region to track in Class 2A for a second straight year is Region 2. No. 2 Swainsboro lost to No. 6 Jeff Davis 71-68 but holds tight at number two after bouncing back in a big way to thump No. 5 Vidalia who had beaten Jeff Davis 51-47 earlier in the week. Quietly looming at No. 9 is Woodville-Tompkins who already has a 6-point win over Vidalia on December 6. This past week, the Wolverines lost 58-49 to Fayette County at the Southern States Classic. Outside of Region 2, No. 3 Banks County climbs into the Top 3. Region 8 is shaping up to be the polar opposite of Region 2 however as one of the weakest regions in the classification. The Leopards are a heavy favorite to run the table and if they don’t, a harsh drop in the poll could befall them. Speaking of harsh drops, Glenn Hills (7-5) is dispatched from the Top 10 after losses to Westside-Augusta 68-63 and Pike Road, AL 57-55. The Spartans have disappointed in Tre Whitehead and Eman Jones’ senior seasons.

No. 1 St. Francis blew out No. 7 Mt. Bethel 72-45 in Class A-Private. The Eagles came back with wins over Mt. Paran (39-32) and Whitefield Academy (51-40), who they bounce from the Top 10 at 5-4. No. 3 Walker had a strong week by beating Mt. Paran 88-61, No. 4 Mt. Pisgah 79-58 and Pinecrest Academy 87-61. No. 5 Trinity Christian had a nice 71-65 win over Class 4A No. 7 Chapel Hill. No. 9 Wesleyan is down three spots following losses to Class A-Public No. 7 Drew Charter (62-55) and Class 5A No. 10 Buford (78-63). Breaking into the rankings is No. 10 WD Mohammed. The Caliphs earned a 63-46 win over South Atlanta. Four players are averaging double figures led by 6-foot-1 senior Ahmad Abdurrahman (16.4 ppg, 6 rpg, 3.1 apg, 2.8 spg). 5-foot-9 freshman Bilal Abdur-Rahman (13 ppg, 6.1 apg, 2.8 spg), 6-foot-3 senior Fahim Law (12.9 ppg, 9.8 rpg, 1.5 bpg) and 5-foot-10 freshman Rodrigo Farias (10.3 ppg) round out the attack.

Class A-Public is getting fun. No. 1 Treutlen won 70-68 at Class 2A No. 6 Jeff Davis as Kam Jordan scored 27 and Chris Floyd netted 25. No. 2 Wilcox County had a huge week, taking down No. 4 Lanier County 83-75 and defending state champion No. 5 Calhoun County 66-63, both games on the road. Greene County (5-2) and Pelham (1-2) exit the rankings. The Tigers were hammered by GMC (71-50) and Warren County (100-73) while the Hornets fell to Thomasville (67-45) and Seminole County (65-56). No. 7 Drew Charter earns its way into the poll with wins over Class A-Private No. 9 Wesleyan 62-55 and Grady 71-63. No. 8 Hancock Central crashes the party following wins against Washington County (77-71) and Thomson (93-75).
