The penultimate week of a rough 2020 is here. Tournaments both in Georgia and out of state will help shift the rankings heading into the new year. For the most part, the rankings are starting to see a little stability as just four new teams enter their respective polls.No. 2 McEachern still hasn’t clicked on all cylinders in Class 7A and hasn’t been nearly as dominant as they should be on paper. The Indians lost 52-51 at Class 6A No. 2 Lovejoy before taking care of No. 8 Rockdale County 73-39 at the Carrollton Christmas Classic. No. 4 Cherokee put together another flawless week, closing with a 66-42 win over Dacula at the War Lodge Invitational. Furman-signee Kate Johnson posted 18 points, 8 rebounds and 3 blocks while Presli Clark added 15 points and 5 steals. No. 5 Campbell notched another key win, this time beating No. 9 Grayson 60-56 as Cheyenne Clark collected 16 points and 5 rebounds. Coach Randy McClure’s top five scorers this season have all been juniors – no surprise if you knew what the Spartans had coming back. Nia Bozeman (12.6 ppg, 4.1 rpg, 3.1 spg), Laila Battle (12.4 ppg, 3.1 rpg, 3.7 apg, 3 spg) and North Florida-commit Sarah Taub (11.4 ppg, 5.3 rpg, 3.1 apg, 5.1 spg) pace an aggressive full court pressure defense that converts turnovers into points. No. 7 North Forsyth rises a spot after Anna Gliatta helped the Raiders avoid disaster at the War Lodge Invitational, dropping 26 points to survive Harrison 57-55.

It’s a big week in Class 6A as No. 1 Westlake visits scorching-hot No. 2 Lovejoy in Region 4 action. The Lions ate up Class 7A No. 9 Grayson 62-42 at the Peach State Classic while Lovejoy held off No. 2 McEachern 52-51 behind 5-foot-9 sophomore La’Nya Foster’s 16 points. She’s reached double digits every game this season after going just 1-13 for 2 points in a season-opening loss to Class 5A No. 1 Forest Park. 5-foot-8 freshman point guard Bryanna Preston has led the Wildcats in scoring at 12.3 points per game. No. 4 Carrollton demolished Sandy Creek 72-32 at the Carrollton Christmas Classic. No. 6 Langston Hughes drilled Class 5A No. 9 Griffin 68-28 at the Peach State Classic while No. 8 Rockdale County dropped 73-39 to McEachern at the Carrollton Christmas Classic. No. 10 Cambridge sinks two spots even though they remained unbeaten. They beat Centennial 47-32 before escaping 3-6 Allatoona in overtime 82-72. The 72 points allowed by Cambridge was 25 over Allatoona’s previous season-high of 47. In comparison to other ranked opponents in 6A, the Buccaneers lost 83-29 to No. 5 Kell and 59-24 to returnee No. 9 Sprayberry. The Yellow Jackets are now healthy and have won four-straight behind Flau’jae Johnson and Anna Vereen.  River Ridge (7-3) drops out of the Top 10. The Knights have been shorthanded all year long. Missing 6-foot freshman Allie Sweet (7.4 ppg, 11 rpg, 3.4 spg) this week, the Knights fell to North Paulding 55-52 and to Class 7A No. 8 Marietta 80-50 with a 44-31 win over Harrison at the War Lodge Invitational sandwiched in between.

There was little movement in Class 5A, but we do have a new debut. No. 6 Maynard Jackson picked up a 77-66 win at New Manchester while No. 9 Griffin sinks two spots following a 68-28 loss to Class 6A No. 6 Langston Hughes at the Peach State Classic.  No. 8 Tri-Cities outlasted Mundy’s Mill 43-39 in overtime. Dutchtown (7-4) wasn’t long for the rankings, bounced out after one week. The Bulldogs went 0-3 with losses to Class 4A No. 7 Spalding (59-49), Class 4A No. 9 Arabia Mountain (58-45) and most damning, 3-5 Eagle’s Landing (40-37). Breaking into the poll is No. 10 Warner Robins. The Demonettes suffered their first loss of the season to Class 3A No. 8 Upson-Lee 60-49 but bounced back with a 68-21 win over Bleckley County. Freshman Neveah Mack has been the catalyst, leading the team in scoring at 10.2 points to go along with her 5 rebounds, 1.2 assists and 1.5 steals per game.

In Class 4A, there are no changes to the rankings. No. 1 Jefferson triumphed over No. 10 Cedar Shoals 65-36 while No. 3 Luella won ugly against 0-8 Fayette County 44-32. We won’t be seeing No. 4 Carver-Columbus any time soon after wins over Shaw (80-21) and Kendrick (95-40) as Region 2 has shut down play until January. No. 7 Spalding knocked off last week’s Class 5A No. 10 Dutchtown 59-49 as did No. 9 Arabia Mountain who opened the season with a 58-45 win over the Bulldogs.

The ever-competitive Class 3A is starting to see some fissures in the poll. No. 2 Cross Creek holds onto their spot after a 39-37 rematch loss to North Augusta, SC. COVID has hit Savannah as No. 3 Beach has seen games with Class A-Private No. 9 Calvary Day and Class 2A No. 3 Woodville-Tompkins rescheduled. No. 6 GAC is down two spots, this time after a 49-45 win over Redan. The defending champs have gotten the benefit of the doubt this season with three losses to ranked teams. However, whether it’s right or wrong, the Spartans need to win some games in impressive fashion to make sure they aren’t staying afloat in the polls just due to playing a tough schedule. GAC earned their second win of the season, this time against Redan 49-45. Coming off a 7-16 season, the Raiders are much improved at 3-1, but in a nip-and-tuck classification, GAC doesn’t have much room for error and needs to impose their will on teams outside of the Top 10. Moving up is No. 4 Coahulla Creek. The Colts have been balanced all season long and saw Shorter-signee Katelyn Richards pour in 23 points in a 67-48 win over Lakeview-Fort Oglethorpe, followed by Kenley Woods’ 14.  No. 5 Stephens County climbs as well, beating Class A-Private No. 10 Tallulah Falls 70-55 with Bre Taylor (18), Ranajah Verdell (16), Tynajiah Eades (16) and Savana Broska (10) all scoring in double figures. Gilmer (5-0) is the hard luck out this week after not playing a game. Surging into the poll is No. 8 Upson-Lee, who forces their way in. The Knights have excelled so far, going 4-0. Most impressive about Upson-Lee’s start is the schedule they have played. The Knights aren’t beating up on cupcakes. Their opponents are a combined 18-6 highlighted by Class 5A No. 10 Warner Robins who they just defeated on the road 60-49 with four players reaching double digits. The Knights are a veteran group that can pound teams to submission inside with seniors 5-foot-11 Tyla Zellner (15.3 ppg, 6.3 rpg) and 5-foot-10 workhorse Jakera Ellerbee (13.5 ppg, 12.8 rpg, 1.5 bpg). Ja’Khia Parker, another senior, balances the attack from the perimeter averaging 10.3 points, 7.5 rebounds and 3.3 steals per game. Coach Stephany Raines is a disciplinary that has the Knights focused at the task at hand, relying on six seniors with plenty of experience.

No. 5 Elbert County continues to impress in Class 2A. The Blue Devils blew out Class A-Public No. 7 GMC 50-29 as sophomore Aaniyah Allen netted 17 points while fellow 2023s Terrace Hester and Jamia Allens scored 9 apiece. Chattooga (3-1) falls out after a 43-40 loss to Darlington at the Rome News-Tribune Christmas Tournament. Making their debut is No. 10 Dodge County. The Squaws edged Lamar County 53-51 behind sophomore Altierra Gooch’s 25 points. She is averaging 14.5 points and 11.8 rebounds on the year.

Two of Class A-Private’s best took the court at the United Bank Holiday Invitational in Myrtle Beach. No. 1 St. Francis beat Northwood, SC 56-43 with Erica Moon dropping 18 points, 4 rebounds and 4 assists. Mississippi State-signee Mia Moore had 14 points, 5 rebounds and 3 steals. No. 5 Hebron Christian lost 61-59 to New Hope, MD. Rice-signee Malia Fisher went 11-12 from the floor and finished with 22 points in the loss. Back in Georgia, No. 8 Greenforest defeated Stephenson 72-50 at the Peach State Classic. No. 10 Tallulah Falls drops one spot after losing 70-55 to Class 3A No. 5 Stephens County, Veronaye Charlton scoring a game-high 22 points in the defeat.

In Class A-Public, No. 1 Calhoun County beat Dougherty 54-39. No. 3 Turner County romped Cook 58-20. The Rebels’ three-headed monster is the highest scoring trio in the state. 5-foot-8 senior Jaylasia Office (20.8 ppg, 6.8 rpg, 3.8 apg, 2.6 spg), 5-foot-7 sophomore TyKhia Burgess (20 ppg, 7.3 rpg, 4.5 spg) and 5-foot-8 senior Yakia Temple (19.7 ppg, 5.5 rpg, 3.5 apg, 4.8 spg) have dominated the competition. No. 4 Lake Oconee jumps No. 5 Clinch County who still hasn’t played a game. The Titans beat Evans 66-37 and Commerce 66-47, both on the road. No. 7 GMC lost 50-29 at Class 2A No. 5 Elbert County and struggled to beat Tattnall Square 32-31. No. 6 Trion beat Drew Charter (50-44) and Ridgeland (72-40) before losing at the Gordon Lee Christmas Tournament to 6-2 Class 4A Pickens 51-40.  No. 8 Wilcox County started the season with a 48-39 win over Telfair County.  No. 9 Pelham beat Quitman County 54-42 while No. 10 Dooly County didn’t record results against Marion County and Macon County.
