Region play has begun across much of the state but a few marquee showcases are still helping shape the rankings. Following a slew of overtime thrillers, four teams are making their first appearance in their respective Top 10s.
There were multiple Top 10 showdowns in Class 6A. No. 1 Grayson went on the road to beat newly ranked No. 10 Grovetown 70-53 after the Warriors clawed into the poll with a 59-57 victory at South Gwinnett (8-3) knocking the Comets out who also lost 52-40 to Class 4A No. 4 Southwest DeKalb at Battle at Big Red. No. 2 Wheeler held off No. 3 Walton 55-52, the Raiders rising a spot with the hard-fought road loss where Sewanee-signee Nikolas Avaliani scored 19 points after beating No. 7 Etowah 58-53 earlier in the week. No. 4 Newton took a 68-65 loss to North Mecklenburg, NC in overtime at the FCA I-85 Showcase. No. 6 McEachern defeated rival and previously unbeaten Hillgrove 84-60 on the road before beating Class 3A No. 5 Westside-Augusta 64-50 at Battle at Big Red.
Class 5A No. 1 Milton shook off a 46-43 trap game at Chattahoochee to hammer Class 6A No. 5 Norcross at the House of Blue in the Hawks-Naismith Holiday Classic. The Eagles shot 13-31 from beyond the arc paced by Jaydon Cole’s 7-13 shooting for 23 points while Milwaukee-signee Josh Dixon tallied 19 points and 11 assists. No. 3 Tri-Cities beat Private No. 2 Greenforest 58-44 but was blown out at the Battle in the Peach by Private No. 1 Holy Innocents’ 73-43. No. 4 Habersham Central ascends two spots after a huge week saw the Raiders beat No. 5 Winder-Barrow 80-77 in overtime, win at Alcovy 68-55 and top Dorman, SC 62-60 at the FCA I-85 Showcase. The Bulldogs have not lost since adding Bobby Buggs to the roster, the well-traveled D-I caliber guard bounced from Eagle’s Landing to ELCA back to Eagle’s Landing to Legacy Early College, SC to Dutchtown all in the span of a few months.
Class 4A No. 1 Pace Academy beat No. 9 Westminster 80-63 after the Wildcats had scored an 85-56 win against last week’s Class A D-I No. 5 Towers. No. 3 North Oconee held off No. 6 McDonough 51-48 at Battle at Big Red, Justin Wise scoring 21 points. No. 4 Southwest DeKalb’s climb continues, up two more spots following a 2-1 week. The Panthers helped knock Marist (5-4) out of the Top 10 with a 54-34 victory and closed the week with a 52-40 win over last week’s Class 6A No. 8 South Gwinnett at Battle at Big Red with a 59-51 loss at rival Tucker sandwiched in between. Kelvin Peek III averaged 16.5 points and 9 rebounds in the two wins. Marist also lost to No. 8 St. Pius X 71-51 to help seal their fate. Class A D-I shuffles the deck again as No. 1 Putnam County has completed their climb from unranked in the preseason to number one, pounding last week’s Class 2A No. 7 Laney 82-50. The War Eagles were a bit of a question mark heading into this season, coming off a 16-10 campaign without a playoff berth and losing their All-State leading scorer Landon Bonner (24 ppg). Now outside of the juggernaut CSRA region which tested them last year, the War Eagles have nearly the entirety of their roster back from last season and have seen multiple players step up in their newfound roles, using a high-octane balanced attack to overwhelm opponents as the War Eagles are averaging 77.6 points per game with three players averaging double digits led by J’Mari Greene’s 18 points a night while a total of eight players average 5.5 points or more. No. 2 BEST Academy added to their list of wins against Top 10 Private schools, beating last week’s No. 6 Mt. For the second time this season No. 4 McIntosh County Academy fell in overtime to Brunswick, this time by a score of 72-68. Zion-Carrollton rode Payton Waters’ 26 points, 6 rebounds, 6 assists and 3 steals to a 73-63 win over Atlanta Classical. Out of the poll to make room for Early County is Manchester (0-0) who will finally tip-off their season this Friday.
Outside of the top two, maybe three, there is immense parity in Class 3A-1A Private. In the driver’s seat, No. 1 Holy Innocents’ blew past No. 8 Lovett 67-41 and Class 5A No. 3 Tri-Cities 73-43. Lovett is actually up two spots however after they secured a key 64-61 win against Tucker at the Battle in the Peach as Cameron Cannon poured in 23 points. No. 2 Greenforest lost 58-44 to 5A No. 3 Tri-Cities while No. 3 North Cobb Christian pulled away from Class 2A No. 6 Union County on the road over the final two minutes to secure a 76-65 win as Brock Bass-Bonner scored 30 points and Xavier Butler added 24. No. 6 Mt. Bethel returns to the Top 10 in fashion, beating fellow returnee No. 9 Paideia 57-50 before thumping No. 10 Mt. Vernon 74-50 on the road. Paideia is back in the poll thanks to their 82-77 win over St. Francis (5-5) who falls from the Top 10. Mt. Vernon is down four spots as they also lost at the buzzer at Class A D-I No. 2 BEST Academy 49-48. Mt. Paran (6-5) drops out of the rankings with losses to Landmark Christian (78-59) and King’s Ridge (82-74).
