After a week of finishing up tournaments in and out of the state, key region battles loom in Week 8 after two new number ones grace the polls.

For the first time in a long time, there is no movement in Class 7A as everybody who played won. No. 1 Westlake rolled to the Naples Holiday Shootout championship and then returned home to crush Zebulon B. Vance, NC at the She Got Game Classic 68-44 behind Carlyse Hooks’ 21 points and Raven Johnson’s 19. No. 2 Collins Hill dominated Myers Park, NC 78-55 at the She Got Game Classic as Sacha Washington posted 22 points, 18 rebounds and 4 blocks. No. 10 Pebblebrook went 2-0 at the She Got Game Classic, drilling Florida-based squads Bishop Verot (57-25) and Lakewood (63-38).

In Class 6A, No. 1 Lovejoy blew out Zebulon B. Vance, NC 52-22 at the She Got Game Classic before racing past Class A-Private No. 4 Holy Innocents’ 60-41. No. 2 Forest Park hammered North Cobb 54-29 before splitting at the SGGC with Montverde Academy, FL (L 46-40) and Florida State University (W 59-52). Sania Feagin averaged 14.5 points and 7 rebounds. No. 4 Dacula squeezed out a 51-47 win over defending state champion Lanier up in Tennessee at the Andrew Johnson Bank Ladies Classic and now host the Longhorns on Tuesday. No. 8 Alexander knocked off rival Douglas County 55-51 on the road to move to 8-1 in Region 5. Unsigned 6-foot senior Aaliyah Foxx-Rome was a load inside, double-doubling with 19 points, 13 rebounds and 3 blocks. Northside-Warner Robins (9-3) is out of the poll following a 64-52 loss to Warner Robins. Debuting is fellow Region 1 foe No. 9 Houston County. The Bears defeated Coffee 50-44 and will quickly be put to the test as they host Northside on Tuesday and No. 3 Valdosta on Saturday. Houston County is led by a trio of juniors in TJ Lawrence (12.6 ppg), Kendra Roberts (8.1 ppg) and Skylar Bailey (7.9 ppg).

No. 3 Villa Rica earned an important overtime win against No. 7 Rome 68-58 to keep pace in Region 7-AAAAA. Dekyia Cofield dropped in 22 points while Aliyah Hindsman netted 15 and Hannah Goen (14) and Kyndal Coleman (13) combined for 27. Rome bounced back with a 58-55 win over Hiram to remain in second-place in the region at 6-1, trailing only undefeated 7-0 No. 2 Kell. No. 6 Jones County took down Class 2A No. 3 Laney 45-44 to win the Morris Bank Classic championship. No. 9 Veterans took care of Class 4A No. 10 West Laurens 48-33.  Falling out of the poll is Southwest DeKalb (11-6). The Panthers were beat by Bishop Kenny, FL 55-51 at the SGGC. Breaking into the poll for the first time since Week 1 is No. 10 Starr’s Mill. The Panthers have won 8-straight including going 3-0 at the Hilton Sandestin Beach Blowout, beating 12-3 Pace, FL 50-40 to close out their trip.

No. 2 Spalding suffered two losses in Class 4A against Scott County, KY (70-68) and Ramsay, AL (53-42) but hold fast in the two-hole due to strength of schedule. No. 6 Troup County picked up a 42-33 win at Sandy Creek. 5-foot-9 senior Amber Gilbert is averaging 17.7 points, 8.8 rebounds and 2.9 steals to power the Tigers. 6-foot sophomore Aniya Palmer is pitching in 12.3 points, 9.2 rebounds, 2.6 steals and 3.3 blocks while freshman Alexcia Murphy is contributing 8.6 points, 8.3 rebounds, 2.9 steals and 1.1 blocks. Falling out of the Top 10 is St. Pius X (12-2) who suffered back-to-back losses. They were defeated by Father Ryan, TN 35-18 before being handled by debutant No. 8 Stephens County 59-41 – Stephens County’s first win in school history against St. Pius. The Indians are off to their best start in over a decade at 12-4. A potent junior class as led the charge behind Ranajah Verdell, Nana Eades, Kiki Howard and Bre Taylor. Taylor scored 20 points, followed by Verdell’s 19, Howard’s 12 and Eades’ 7 in the win over the Golden Lions. Over their past four games, the Indians have also beaten Class 3A No. 8 Dawson County (53-38) and Class 5A 12-4 Loganville (51-36).

It’s time for Round 3 between Class 3A powers No. 1 Johnson-Savannah and No. 2 Beach. It’s been since 2016 that either Beach or Johnson hasn’t won the state title – the Atomsmashers currently the two-time defending state champs. Johnson has won both matchups this season: 60-57 and 53-36 and will try to make it 3-0 on Tuesday at Beach. Region 7 has a crucial showdown as well on Tuesday between No. 4 Fannin County and No. 5 GAC, the two’s first meeting this season. The Rebels are coming off a 57-45 win at rival Gilmer while GAC beat Seminole, FL at the SGGC 73-58 behind Kaleigh Addie’s 30 points, 5 rebounds and 3 steals.  Sinking from the poll is Lumpkin County (10-7). The Indians fell 46-40 at North Hall, who nearly bursts back into the Top 10 but a week-ending 73-60 loss at White County prevents them. Instead, it is No. 10 Sonoraville who re-enters at 11-5 following a big 42-31 win over Class A-Private Darlington who is 13-2; both losses coming via the Lady Phoenix.

A new number one arises in Class 2A following No. 4 Early County’s 46-45 loss at Class A-Public No. 5 Calhoun County. No. 1 Rabun County assumes the top position after No. 3 Laney tripped up against Class 5A No. 6 Jones County 45-44. Rabun earned an important Region 8 road win at No. 6 Union County 50-46. The Panthers actually rise two spots following the narrow defeat. In the win, the Lady Cats were led by Laken Stiles’ 9 points and Destiny Deetz’ 8 points and 11 rebounds. Ava Hunter dumped in 17 points in the loss for Union County.  No. 2 Douglass rises three spots after a 40-36 win over Woodbridge, VA at the SGGC. Ikenya King double-doubled while a now healthy Ashuntee Weems won MVP. Over in Region 3, No. 7 Southwest-Macon took down No. 8 Washington County 54-48 behind Stantagious Alford’s 19 points and Jakhyla Johnson’s 16 but couldn’t move up the poll following a 69-55 loss at East Laurens. The Golden Hawks slide down four spots but won 49-44 over Northeast-Macon to remain ranked after Miracle Parker poured in 25 points, 5 rebounds and 3 blocks. Though she had 27 points and 10 rebounds, Keyarah Berry wasn’t able to keep Rockmart (10-5) from falling 69-53 at Class 5A No. 3 Villa Rica and dropping out of the poll. Returning is 12-3 No. 10 Bryan County, who defeated Jeff Davis 60-48 and now have a tough matchup at Woodville-Tompkins on Tuesday.

No. 2 Hebron Christian’s latest victim in Class A-Private was Northwest Guilford, NC at the SGGC, winning 51-48 as Malia Fisher had 12 points and 7 rebounds while Nicole Azar scored 11 and Jessie Parish added 10. There is finally some movement among the Top 5 as No. 3 Wesleyan trades places with No. 4 Holy Innocents’. The Wolves beat Braden River, FL at the SGGC behind Georgia Tech-signee AC Carter’s 23 points and 15 rebounds. The Golden Bears beat Class 6A No. 10 Mt. Zion-Jonesboro 64-46 but were blown out by Class 6A No. 1 Lovejoy 60-41. No. 6 Greenforest stayed hot with a 66-57 win over No. 7 Galloway to win the Battle in Buckhead and nearly leapfrogged over No. 5 Mt. Paran, but the Eagles earned a big 86-69 win over Lincoln, FL at the SGGC as Kara Dunn exploded for 33 points and 8 assists while Jasiah Washington powered in 24 points and 12 rebounds. At the bottom of the poll, Trinity Christian (12-4) exits following a 36-35 loss to Seymour, TN. Returning is No. 10 Stratford Academy who beat Union Grove (52-41) and Wilkinson County (62-45).

Class A-Public was rocked as No. 1 Central-Talbotton blasted No. 4 Greenville in their rematch 60-34 to knock the Patriots off their perch and take over the top ranking. Bernyla Sparks had 16 points, 11 rebounds and 6 assists while fellow junior Ty’Shemia Bunkley added 16 points and 13 rebounds. Senior Shakemia Marshall had 15 points and 6 rebounds while Greenville’s potent duo of Shabrica (15) and Jabrica (12) Leslie was held to a combined 27 points. No. 2 Wheeler County was jumped by Central-Talbotton due to a lack of a true signature win thus far. No. 5 Calhoun County is up three spots after a huge week saw them drop last week’s Class 2A No. 1 Early County 46-45 and then drill No. 9 Pelham 58-35, sinking the Hornets four spots. No. 6 Bowdon quietly rises four spots following all the mayhem in the middle of the poll and a win over Mt. Zion-Carrollton. No. 7 Dooly County enters the Top 10 after beating No. 8 Macon County 57-44. The Bulldogs remain in the Top 10 after sending defending state champion Marion County (4-3) out with a 69-65 win. The Eagles also lost to Kendrick 70-62.
