A new calendar year is upon us. Many classifications have seen movement slow down as teams are solidifying themselves in the polls. A wave of holiday tournaments afforded us with Top 10 matchups, but region play is now becoming a clear focus with only MLK weekend on the horizon to wrap up the tournament season.

Even with Caleb Holt out of the lineup, Class 6A No. 1 Grayson was able to hang on for a pair of wins, surviving Archer 60-59 before outlasting No. 4 McEachern 46-38 at the Grayson New Year’s Classic.  The New Year’s Classic also saw No. 2 Wheeler defeat Private No. 3 Greenforest 67-53 behind Mansur McClain’s 31 points off seven threes. No. 5 Walton defeated Chapel Hill 59-49 and Campbell 78-62 while No. 6 Etowah beat Marist 72-52 and won at Woodstock 60-51. No. 9 Norcross tumbles three spots with a 70-68 overtime loss against Meadowcreek. No. 10 Grovetown hangs tight after a 56-49 overtime loss to North Augusta, SC at the Battle of the Border.

Class 5A No. 1 Milton suffered a pair of losses at The Classic at Tennessee, beaten 69-63 by Central, AL and 68-64 by St. Joseph’s, CA. No. 4 Habersham Central topped Class 2A No. 6 South Atlanta 67-55 at the North Georgia Showcase. No. 5 Winder-Barrow took care of Seckinger (8-6) 60-45 at the Sandy’s Spiel Shootout to knock the Jaguars from the Top 10 as Jerrin Samuel poured in 23 points, 13 rebounds, 2 assists, 2 steals and 1 block. No. 8 Alexander is up a spot after losing 62-50 to Class 3A No. 6 Sandy Creek at the Lemon Street Classic but bouncing back with a 63-53 win over Pebblebrook at the Grayson New Year’s Classic. No. 9 Lee County falls two spots with a 64-55 loss to Peachtree Ridge at the New Year’s Classic. No. 10 New Manchester resurfaces in the poll thanks to a 77-76 win over Class 2A No. 1 Carver-Columbus at the Lemon Street Classic.

In Class 4A, No. 1 Pace Academy edged South Gwinnett 65-55 at the Grayson New Year’s Classic. No. 2 North Oconee rises a spot with a 69-67 win over Buford at the Sandy’s Spiel Shootout, surviving 5-12 shooting from the foul line in the fourth quarter including a 1-8 stretch to end the game. Banks Pourchier dominated inside with 22 points and 8 rebounds while Khamari Brooks powered in 18 points, 11 rebounds, 2 assists and 3 steals. No. 3 Kell slips in the poll with a 53-51 loss to Sprayberry at the Longhorn Classic. Westminster (9-4) slides out of the Top 10 with a pair of losses in Florida. No. 10 Central-Carrollton climbs back in fresh off a 75-69 win at Starr’s Mill.

There are no changes in Class 3A. No. 6 Sandy Creek defeated Class 5A No. 8 Alexander 62-50 behind Jacobi Robinson’s 18 points, 5 rebounds, 2 assists and 2 steals along with Jared White’s 16 points and 6 assists and Kilo Okeke’s 14-point, 10-rebound double-double. No. 8 Westside-Augusta saw Jarius Adkinson make his long-awaited season debut after an offseason knee injury, leading the Patriots past No. 9 Baldwin 69-56.

Class 2A No. 1 Carver-Columbus hangs onto their spot after a 77-76 loss to Class 5A No. 10 New Manchester at the Lemon Street Classic, Troy-signee Tony Montgomery with 36 points as the Tigers saw an 11-point lead with three minutes left slip away. No. 2 Columbia pounded last week’s Class A D-I No. 9 Towers 72-47. No. 6 South Atlanta fell to Class 5A No. 4 Habersham Central 67-55 at the North Georgia Showcase. No. 9 Hart County is down a spot after losing to Private No. 8 Lovett 79-68 at the North Georgia Showcase and to Madison County 69-62. Out of the Top 10 are Spencer (8-3), beaten 52-51 by Sumter County, and Westside-Macon (5-6) edged by debutant No. 8 Morgan County 54-50 and Veterans 65-57. No. 10 Laney is back in the rankings.

In Class A D-I, No. 4 Temple defeated Class A D-II No. 10 Mt. Zion-Carrollton 63-61. No. 6 Rabun County toppled Commerce 59-53 behind Huey Blalock’s 27 points, the junior surpassing the 1,000-point mark earlier in the week in a 105-64 win at Towns County, netting 33 points. Towers (8-5) exits the rankings with a 72-47 loss at Class 2A No. 2 Columbia. No. 9 Vidalia bounces back in after beating Toombs County 41-36.

Class A D-II has limited movement. No. 10 Mt. Zion-Carrollton barely holds onto their spot after losing 63-61 at Class A D-I No. 4 Temple before getting drilled at Douglas County 74-46. Mitchell County (7-6) exits after reporting two losses from last week, beat by Cairo (51-45) and Central-Macon (52-48). No. 9 Clinch County makes their first appearance of the season in the Top 10 riding wins at Irwin County (73-54) and Atkinson County (58-41).

Class 3A-1A Private No. 2 North Cobb Christian rallied to beat Hebron Christian 62-61 at the Longhorn Classic after losing Brock Bass-Bonner to injury in the second quarter. The Eagles came back from down 20 at the half as Xavier Butler piled in 20 points and 14 rebounds to lead the way. No. 3 Greenforest lost to Class 6A No. 2 Wheeler 67-53 at the Grayson New Year’s Classic. No. 5 Calvary Day slides a spot with a 69-64 loss at Episcopal School of Jacksonville, FL while No. 4 Darlington rises with a 2-0 effort in Savannah at Basketball at the Beach, beating Groves 63-37 and Johnson-Savannah 73-48. No. 8 Lovett beat Class 2A No. 9 Hart County 79-68 at the North Georgia Showcase while No. 10 Walker suffered a 58-52 loss to Valdosta at the Lemon Street Classic.
