With the final month of 2022 upon us there is plenty of moving and shaking in the polls. The Tournament of Champions among other showcase events not only have reshuffled some classifications but has given us a better idea of who the top teams in the state are, regardless of classification.

Class 7A is getting interesting in the middle of the poll. Up top, No. 1 Wheeler defeated Kimball, TX 77-61 at Tournament of Champions while No. 2 McEachern fell 67-62 to Class 5A No. 1 Kell. No. 3 Grayson is up a spot with a 64-60 win over Class 6A No. 1 Alexander at TOC, Gicarri Harris posting 19 points while Amir Taylor added 18 points and 7 rebounds. No. 5 Newton dropped a tough game against national powerhouse Duncanville, TX 80-76 as UConn-signee Stephon Castle went for 41 points. No. 8 Archer climbs a position after securing a 65-60 win at Mountain View, Kahmare Holmes tallying 19 points and 8 rebounds. Out of the poll is Parkview (5-4). The Panthers once again struggled with the Top 10 target on their back, losing 58-57 to newly ranked Class 5A No. 9 Centennial and 64-54 to No. 6 Milton, who debuts in the rankings after also winning at No. 7 Pebblebrook 84-79 as Josh Dixon poured in 41 points. Milton closed the week with a 67-61 win against Chapel Hill at TOC while Pebblebrook rebounded with a 63-41 victory over Class 5A No. 5 Tri-Cities.

No. 1 Alexander fell 64-60 to Class 7A No. 3 Grayson at Tournament of Champions, but maintains their position atop Class 6A. No. 3 Lanier creeps up a spot with a 67-52 win over Denmark while No. 4 Jonesboro was defeated by Douglass, TN 58-54 at the Memphis vs. Atlanta Roundball Classic. No. 5 Langston Hughes survived Class 5A No. 8 Tucker 53-50 at TOC, Randy Latham netting 12 points. No. 6 St. Pius X knocked off Class 5A No. 10 Lithonia 54-38 before surviving Blessed Trinity 63-59 on the road as Coach Aaron Parr became the school’s all-time winningest coach with 260 victories surpassing Mark Kelly. No. 7 Marist outlasted No. 8 Etowah 55-53 in overtime dropping the Eagles to 0-5. Paulding County (2-2) departs following an 87-68 loss to Class 5A No. 3 Hiram. No. 10 South Paulding emerges in the rankings right ahead of their showdown with top-ranked Alexander on Tuesday. The Spartans opened the season with a pair of school records in their 100-44 throttling of Villa Rica, reaching triple digits for the first time and Andrew LaVigne netting 39 points, a single-game record. South Paulding then scored a pair of road wins, holding off Calhoun 59-46 and beating North Paulding 80-62, Jeremiah Taylor averaging 21.5 points over the two games.

Don’t look now but Class 5A No. 1 Kell is starting to put together a case to be considered the top team in all of Georgia. The latest addition to the resume is a 67-62 win against Class 7A No. 2 McEachern at the Tournament of Champions, CJ Brown (18) and Jaylen Colon (17) combining for 35 points in the signature victory. All four of the Longhorns wins have come against ranked opponents. No. 3 Hiram dispatched of last week’s Class 6A No. 10 Paulding County 87-68 on the road. No. 4 Mays is up a spot with a win against last week’s Class A D-I No. 7 Paideia 81-69. No. 5 Tri-Cities is struggling to stay afloat against their tough schedule, losing 63-41 to Class 7A No. 7 Pebblebrook at TOC. No. 6 Jones County survived a scare against Union Grove 70-68, led by Jaden Stanley’s 20 points. No. 7 Dutchtown lost 67-57 to Class 3A No. 4 Cedar Grove but beat Maynard Jackson 64-58 at TOC while No. 8 Tucker was upended by Class 6A No. 5 Langston Hughes 53-50 spoiling a 19-point performance from Josiah Lawson. No. 10 Lithonia holds onto their spot after a 54-38 loss at Class 6A No. 6 St. Pius X. Heritage-Conyers (4-3) slides out of the poll with losses on the road at Arabia Mountain (63-62) and Class 3A No. 4 Cedar Grove (82-77). No. 9 Centennial claws into the Top 10 anchored by a 58-57 win at last week’s Class 7A No. 8 Parkview powered by Kiwane Garris’ 21 points.

No. 1 McDonough made an early season statement in Region 5-4A, going on the road and drubbing Woodland-Stockbridge 83-56 behind Avante Nichols’ 19 points. Amon McDowell led the way in their subsequent 53-43 victory over Cordova, TN at the Memphis vs. Atlanta Roundball Classic scoring 16 points. No. 2 Pace Academy traveled across the pond to play in London, England at the HoopHall Classic, but came back stateside empty handed with losses to Mater Dei, CA 69-66 and Christ the King, NY 63-56. No. 4 Lovett drops a spot after a 61-53 loss to GAC playing without Michigan-commit Christian Anderson. No. 6 Miller Grove fell 61-39 to Class 2A No. 2 Columbia while No. 7 Baldwin defeated last week’s Class A D-II No. 10 Hancock Central 68-55. Westover (3-3) and Hapeville Charter (4-1) tumble out of the rankings. Westover lost 60-55 at Valdosta while Hapeville suffered a 59-48 loss at Holy Innocents’. No. 9 Southwest DeKalb debuts after a 45-38 win at Druid Hills. No. 10 Stephenson is no longer flying under the radar at 5-2. The Jaguars beat Stone Mountain 60-45 this past week but are in the poll due to their prior work, wins over Class 3A No. 4 Cedar Grove (76-69), previously ranked Paideia (61-47) and 6-2 Pope (73-62).

Class 3A is ever-changing. No. 1 Johnson-Savannah proved their mettle atop the classification however, winning 69-68 at Class A D-II No. 3 Wilkinson County at the Blue Storm Showcase. No. 2 Sandy Creek pounded Class 2A No. 3 Spencer 74-50 and defeated Creekside 68-57 on the road. No. 3 Beach escaped Griffin 72-69 at the Blue Storm Showcase as Shamarrie Hugie scored 22 points. Spots four through eight is where the mayhem occurred, every position now changed. No. 4 Cedar Grove springs up four spots after winning at Class 5A No. 7 Dutchtown 67-57 and beating last week’s Class 5A No. 7 Heritage-Conyers 82-77 behind Darius Reynolds’ 16 points, 14 rebounds and 3 blocks. No. 5 Cross Creek won at Butler 63-59 but loses another spot in the poll with a 61-56 loss to Class 2A No. 3 Spencer at the Blue Storm Showcase. No. 6 Oconee County rises one spot after beating rival North Oconee 60-51. No. 7 Monroe sinks two places with a loss at Bainbridge 44-35. No. 8 Wesleyan is also down two slots with losses on the road to Class 2A No. 8 Providence Christian 54-48 and Northview 53-52 with a 60-49 win at GAC sandwiched in between. No. 9 Hart County maintains their slight advantage above region rival No. 10 Monroe Area after a tight 40-34 loss to TL Hanna, SC. The Purple Hurricanes opened their season by rallying from down 18 points to overcome Winder-Barrow 73-62 with Jeremy Anderson scoring 18 points.

In Class 2A, No. 3 Spencer lost 74-50 at Class 3A No. 2 Sandy Creek but rebounded with a 61-56 victory against Class 3A No. 5 Cross Creek. No. 2 Columbia jumps two spots after drilling Class 4A No. 6 Miller Grove 61-29 on the road and beating Washington (1-4) 67-54 at the Tournament of Champions to drop the Bulldogs out of the poll after they also lost to No. 7 Drew Charter 74-58. No. 4 Thomson slips in the rankings after asking out of playing Class 3A No. 1 Johnson-Savannah in order to play Swainsboro instead, winning 62-18 as both teams’ football programs are in their respective classification’s state championship this weekend. No. 6 Putnam County held off last week’s Class A D-II No. 10 Hancock Central for the second time this season, 58-52 as Georgia Southern-signee Eren Banks scored 20. No. 8 Providence Christian defeated Class 3A No. 8 Wesleyan 54-48 before dropping to Berkmar 60-52. No. 10 North Cobb Christian barely hangs onto their position in the poll after losing to South Atlanta 69-58 and dropping to newly ranked Class A D-I No. 10 Chattooga in overtime at the Sandy’s Spiel Showdown 69-66, Christian Hernandez drilling 10 threes and scoring 32 points as the Eagles played without Albert Wilson III. No. 9 Windsor Forest cracks the Top 10 for the first time this season after winning at Statesboro 59-56.

There is a new number one in Class A D-I. No. 1 Mt. Bethel rises to the top following a 71-43 win at Galloway but more importantly a No. 3 King’s Ridge home loss to No. 2 Mt. Pisgah 74-65, jumping the Patriots three spots and sinking the Tigers a pair as Micah Tucker dumped in 39 points. No. 4 Mt. Vernon Presbyterian slips two spots following a 43-40 loss to a methodical Lausanne Collegiate, TN at the Memphis vs. Atlanta Roundball Classic. No. 6 Social Circle tumbles two spots after their 38-game regular season winning streak came to a close, upset on the road by Morgan County 77-67. No. 7 Woodville-Tompkins climbs two positions after avenging a loss to Brunswick, beating the Pirates 67-58 behind Alfonzo Ross’ 33 points. No. 8 Darlington holds tight to their spot after a 66-44 loss at the Sandy’s Spiel Showdown to Cherokee. Paideia (3-6) and Athens Christian (4-3) exit the poll. The Pythons went 0-3 this week, losing to Class 5A No. 4 Mays (81-69), St. Francis (56-50) and Power Center Academy, TN (65-49). The Eagles were run out of the gym in Maryland at the Good Counsel Xavieran Classic, trounced by Our Lady of Good Counsel, MD 70-46 and Norfolk Collegiate, VA 95-45. No. 9 Dublin resurfaces after escaping West Laurens in overtime 62-58 and grinding out a 52-47 win at Vidalia. No. 10 Chattooga sneaks in following a 69-66 overtime win against Class 2A No. 10 North Cobb Christian at the Sandy’s Spiel Showdown, five players reaching double figures paced by Tequarius Gibson’s 17 points.

Class A D-II No. 1 Greenforest beat Melrose, TN 69-56 at the Memphis vs. Atlanta Roundball Classic. Jax Abernathy is averaging 29 points, 6 rebounds, 5 assists and 6 steals through No. 2 Christian Heritage‘s first three games .No. 3 Wilkinson County ripped up No. 8 Dooly County 82-54 before falling 69-68 to Class 3A No. 1 Johnson-Savannah at the Blue Storm Showcase. No. 4 Portal fell 57-52 at Effingham County to split the season series, but still clings onto their ranking. No. 7 Chattahoochee County lost 55-45 at Northside-Columbus. Hancock Central (1-3) sinks out of the Top 10 for now, all three losses via ranked opponents. The Bulldogs fell 68-55 at Class 4A No. 7 Baldwin before losing again to Class 2A No. 6 Putnam County 58-52. No. 10 Macon County reappears in the poll after opening their season with a 58-53 win at Crisp County.
