No. 3 Wheeler held off North Cobb 58-54 on the road but got beat again on the national circuit, this time by Bishop Gorman, NV 82-66 at the Hoophall Classic. No. 5 Newton fell 61-52 to IMG Academy, FL at Hoophall. No. 8 Buford outlasted Mill Creek in double overtime 77-74. Carrollton (13-3) slips out of the Top 10 with a 63-57 loss at Campbell, spoiling Caleb Odom’s 27 points. Breaking into the rankings for the first time this season is No. 10 Cherokee. The Warriors continue to thrive, their only losses coming on the road to Class 6A No. 4 Etowah 47-46 and No. 8 Buford 65-63. Cherokee slipped past a Luke Flynn-less Walton 55-52 then trounced 13-3 North Cobb on the road 75-61 as Tayden Owens and Lawrence Sanford scored 17 apiece while Braylin Giddens added 15 points and Cameron Pope netted 12. The Warriors have a high-octane backcourt that shares the ball extremely well and can overwhelm teams with their outside shooting and physical on-ball defense.
No. 1 Alexander used a 14-0 run midway through the fourth quarter to pull away from Langston Hughes to stay atop the Class 6A poll with a 64-48 road win. No. 2 Jonesboro received 15 points from Lathan Minnifield in their 72-62 win at No. 10 Woodward Academy. No. 4 Etowah moves up following a 77-72 win against Class 3A No. 4 Cedar Grove. No. 6 Marist toppled No. 7 St. Pius X 49-48, dropping the Golden Lions three spots. Luke Harpring’s emergence continued, netting 20 points now bringing his average to 16.1, nearly doubling last year’s output. No. 8 Blessed Trinity defeated Pope 55-46. South Paulding (14-4) falls out after a pair of buzzer beaters. The Spartans won at New Manchester 67-64 on a three from Andrew LaVigne, but lost at the horn against Newnan 59-58. No. 9 Lee County finally debuts following wins over Veterans (63-48) and Tift County (42-31). The Trojans have a deep attack with seven players averaging over six points per game, led by Christian Brown’s 11.5 per night.
In a Class 5A Top 5 showdown, No. 1 Eagle’s Landing pulled away from No. 5 Dutchtown 51-42. No. 8 Tri-Cities held off Maynard Jackson 66-62 on the road. Northside-Columbus (10-3) was upended by Union Grove 71-70, down 29-8 after the first quarter, sinking the Patriots from the rankings. No. 10 Lithonia reappears after losing 56-52 in overtime at No. 9 Tucker, playing without Caleb Taylor. The Bulldogs bounced back with a huge 53-47 victory against Class 3A No. 3 Johnson-Savannah as Taylor piled in 22 points. Tucker closed their week with a 64-53 win over Baldwin, avenging an earlier 64-44 loss.
No. 2 Pace Academy is knocking on the door of the top spot in Class 4A, scoring a 62-55 win at Flyin’ to the Hoop against Chaminade-Julienne, OH who entered the game 14-0. No. 3 Southwest DeKalb survived at Stephenson in overtime 53-46, but fell 55-42 at Class 2A No. 2 Columbia in a rematch. No. 5 Madison County avenged a buzzer-beating loss to Seckinger (12-6), knocking off the Jaguars 71-62 as the first-year school drops from the Top 10 after also losing 62-53 at Walnut Grove. No. 6 Fayette County picked up wins at LaGrange 70-52 and at home against Trinity Christian 66-58. No. 7 North Oconee tumbles three spots with a 65-62 overtime loss at Class 3A No. 9 Stephens County after beating Walnut Grove 45-43. No. 10 Miller Grove climbs back into the poll riding a four-game winning streak, most recently beating Stephenson 50-33.
Class 3A No. 1 Sandy Creek won 54-45 at Langston Hughes behind Vic Newsom (12), PJ Green (10) and Amari Brown (10). No. 2 Beach righted an earlier wrong, winning at Groves 77-55 after losing 53-51 in their first meeting. No. 3 Johnson-Savannah was knocked off by Class 5A No. 10 Lithonia 53-47 while No. 4 Cedar Grove fell to Class 6A No. 4 Etowah 77-72. No. 5 Monroe Area yo-yos back up three spots after a 3-0 week saw the Purple Hurricanes notch wins over Hart County (69-44), Franklin County (64-51) and Loganville (75-51), Jeremy Anderson averaging 17.7 points. No. 6 Calvary Day loses a spot after a tough 52-48 loss to 14-2 Hilton Head Christian Academy, SC. No. 8 Monroe drops two places with a 60-55 loss at Dougherty. Oconee County (12-5) exits the Top 10 following a 61-53 loss to debutant No. 9 Stephens County. Following a disappointing 6-20 season which saw the Indians lose nine games by six points or less, Stephens County has a emerged as a contender in Region 8 behind No. 5 Monroe Area. The Indians scored a momentous victory over last week’s Class 4A No. 4 North Oconee 65-62 in overtime behind Corey Richie’s 18 points and AJ Russell and Cam Lacy’s 14 and 12 points, respectively.
Down in Class 2A, Khalon Hudson hung 30 points and 20 rebounds in No. 1 Westside-Augusta’s 75-64 win at Butler, a state title rematch. No. 2 Columbia beat Class 4A No. 3 Southwest DeKalb 55-42 to atone for their only loss of the season, 47-46 back on December 10. No. 5 North Cobb Christian is streaking, winners of 11 in-a-row after winning at South Atlanta 68-62 after losing 69-58 in their first meeting. The Eagles went 24-24 from the foul line while Albert Wilson III compiled 27 points, 14 rebounds and 4 steals. No. 6 Putnam County rises three spots following a 70-65 win over No. 7 Thomson, dropping the Bulldogs three places. Landon Bonner scored 24 points followed by Georgia Southern-signee Eren Banks’ 23. The War Eagles had to ride Banks to 33 points in a 63-61 overtime win at Jasper County, a potential trap game.
There is significant shakeup in Class A D-I as the Top 3 from last week all lost. No. 1 Mt. Vernon rises above the wreckage three spots to take over the perch for the first time following a dominant 56-37 win over No. 3 Mt. Pisgah anchored by Keith Williams’ 22 points and 14 rebounds. The Mustangs also topped Riverwood 69-54 as four players recorded double-doubles led by Xavier Shegog’s 16 points and 11 rebounds. No. 2 Mt. Bethel slips a spot after struggling without Mo Diao inside, beating Wesleyan 48-44 after losing 46-43 at No. 6 Paideia, who resurfaces in the Top 10 for the first time since Week 3. The Pythons have rattled the rankings, earning two wins over Top 3 teams the past two weeks, beating No. 3 Mt. Pisgah 66-58 in overtime on January 6. No. 4 King’s Ridge lost 73-69 to St. Anne-Pacelli. No. 7 Savannah suffered a 71-54 loss at Andrew Jackson, FL while No. 9 Tallulah Falls tumbles three spots with ugly wins over Elbert County (60-55) and Commerce (49-44) before failing to score a point in the fourth quarter, blowing a 14-point lead to Prince Avenue 50-49. No. 10 Dublin falls two places with a 46-41 loss to Vidalia after barely beating Bleckley County 48-45. Oglethorpe County (9-8) is a hard-luck departure this week after earning a 68-52 win over Elbert County.
In Class A D-II, Jax Abernathy piled in 35 points in No. 2 Christian Heritage’s 67-53 win at Heritage-Catoosa. No. 3 Portal swept the season series with No. 8 Wilkinson County, pulling away late for a 67-59 win as Joseph Thomas scored 23 points and Amir Jackson added 19. No. 6 Calhoun County falls a spot with an 67-61 upset loss to Terrell County. For the second time this season, No. 9 Macon County blasted Chattahoochee County (12-4), sending the Panthers out of the rankings with a 78-52 defeat. No. 10 Telfair County quickly returns to the Top 10 following wins over Bacon County (75-58) and Wilcox County (68-47).
