The final week of the regular season (for most) teams is here with region tournaments right around the corner. If you have region tournament brackets, please share them to [email protected] to update the Master Schedule.
No. 1 Grayson is still leading the charge in Class 7A, dominating at No. 7 Archer 76-47. The Tigers hold onto their spot in the poll however, even after a 71-56 loss at No. 5 Newton. No. 3 Wheeler swaps places with No. 4 Walton, edging the Raiders 46-43 in their rematch. No. 9 Peachtree Ridge slips a spot with a 63-60 loss at Norcross. West Forsyth (17-7) couldn’t last a week in the rankings, upended at home by No. 10 Milton 66-56, who climbs back into the Top 10 for the first time since Week 1 as Josh Dixon netted 19 points while Anthony Gause added 18 points, 6 rebounds and 7 assists.
The top eight in Class 6A remains unchanged. No. 9 Langston Hughes moves up a spot with a 76-57 win over Class A D-I No. 7 St. Francis. Glynn Academy (21-4) falls out after a 54-38 loss to debutant No. 10 Grovetown who also won at Lakeside-Evans 62-53 and blasted Brunswick 84-54.
Class 5A No. 2 Tucker was rewarded a 52-40 win at Class 2A No. 3 Columbia after the game was stopped at halftime due to crowd control. No. 4 Tri-Cities is up two spaces with a 61-60 win at Mays. Malique Johnson returned to action against Villa Rica in a 73-62 win, scoring 16 points after initially reported out for the season due to injury. No. 5 Eagle’s Landing jolts up three spots, crushing Union Grove 89-51. In-season transfer John McQueen moved in from McEachern last week and scored 12 points. The Eagles are 3-0 since his arrival. No. 7 Chapel Hill tumbles four slots with losses at Banneker (70-66) and at Mays (76-64). No. 8 Maynard Jackson slips three places with a 57-55 loss to Lithia Springs who quietly finds themselves in fourth-place in Region 5 at 13-11 overall but 10-5 in region. Cambridge (16-7) slips out of the rankings with losses to returnee No. 10 GAC 59-57 and Chattahoochee 66-54.
There is no movement in Class 4A. No. 3 North Oconee survived a scare at Cedar Shoals 57-54. No. 6 New Hampstead topped Burke County 72-60 and has now won 11-straight heading into their rematch with No. 10 Benedictine who has won five in a row since losing to the Phoenix 59-58 at the buzzer. No. 9 Fayette County outlasted Trinity Christian 54-53 in overtime.
Class 3A saw six ranked teams lose this past week, the most shocking No. 1 Sandy Creek falling to Etowah 50-49 at the buzzer after beating No. 4 Douglass 57-51 earlier in the week. No. 3 Hebron Christian swept No. 9 Monroe Area, Blake Wilson dumping in 26 points, 8 rebounds, 2 steals and 3 blocks in a 79-69 win. No. 5 Monroe is lucky to only fall two spots, upset at Crisp County 55-48 then beaten at No. 6 Dougherty 59-49. The Trojans could have rose in the rankings this week, but are stuck at six thanks to a 54-53 loss at Columbus to open the week. No. 7 Richmond Academy moves up two places with wins over Harlem (74-65) and Hephzibah (70-37) but Region 4 is still completely up for grabs as Cross Creek (15-9) drops out of the rankings and is replaced by No. 10 Salem who makes their first appearance in the poll, completing a season sweep of the Razorbacks scoring a 55-54 win on the road. First-year Head Coach Karmarlos Jackson has turned the Seminoles around sitting at 15-9 after finishing 11-16 a year ago. Salem has won five-straight, finishing their week with a 81-50 blowout at Harlem.
Significant changes are afoot in Class 2A. No. 3 Columbia lost to Class 5A No. 2 Tucker 52-40, a game which was stopped at halftime due to crowd control. No. 6 Butler drops a spot after a 62-59 loss to Laney while No. 7 ELCA is down a space as well, upset at Towers 52-50. Region 8 sees two casualties in the poll, cannibalized by a suddenly hot Providence Christian. Athens Academy (18-5) and Union County (19-5) depart, the Spartans beat by Providence Christian 61-53 while the Panthers couldn’t weather the Storm either, knocked off 71-68 after thumping both Banks County (84-67) and East Jackson (102-71). No. 8 Walker is back in the Top 10 after a full month out. The Wolverines clinched the one-seed in Region 6, avenging an earlier loss to South Atlanta, swatting the Hornets 68-46 as Anderson Carey exploded for 27 points. Ranked No. 4 to open the season, No. 10 Southwest-Macon has clawed back into the Top 10 after dropping out in Week 3, beating No. 9 Spencer on a last second And-1 putback in overtime 51-49 to take control of Region 2 with a rematch looming on Monday.
Only 14 teams in Class A D-I have a winning record, making it the state’s weakest classification on paper by far. No. 1 Mt. Vernon held off No. 5 Mt. Bethel 57-54. No. 2 Darlington won at Trion 59-51. No. 7 St. Francis won at No. 10 King’s Ridge 73-66 before losing at Class 6A No. 9 Langston Hughes 76-57. Athens Christian (14-8) drops out with a 77-65 loss at Rabun County. No. 9 Oglethorpe County is back in the poll, last ranked in Week 4. The Patriots earned road wins against Social Circle (44-34) and Prince Avenue (68-53) and have now won eight-straight.
Class A D-II No. 4 Macon County knocked Manchester (15-7) out of the Top 10 after just a week in the poll, beating the Blue Devils 62-56. Manchester also lost 68-62 at Schley County. No. 3 Calhoun County pounded No. 8 Seminole County in Donalsonville 84-53. No. 10 Treutlen slides a place with a 65-62 loss to Wilcox County. No. 9 Jenkins County resurfaces in the rankings with a 3-0 week.
