The 2021-22 GHSA season officially tipped on November 12. With just Friday and Saturday in the books, there won’t be much movement or any results, but nonetheless there are already a few notable scores. But remember, you must take into account the absence of football players in certain matchups.

The state of Texas felt the wrath of Class 7A as No. 2 Newton and No. 4 Grayson picked up blowout wins at the Houston Tip-Off Classic, Newton beating Concordia Lutheran, TX 68-37 and Grayson pounding iSchool of Lewisville, TX 87-56 behind North Carolina A&T-signee Tyrese Elliott’s 30 points and Clemson-signee Chauncey Wiggins’ 15 points and 10 rebounds. Back in Georgia, No. 4 Archer took care of Mill Creek 58-48 with Christian Drummer and Damoni Harrison scoring 13 apiece. No. 8 Norcross drilled Class 4A No. 4 Fayette County 94-72 at the DT Invitational as London Johnson and Jerry Deng each scored 22 points. No. 9 Etowah blasted Creekview 71-36 led by Brandon Rechsteiner’s 15 points, 5 assists and 4 steals. No. 10 East Coweta won at Maynard Jackson 74-69.

There is no movement in Class 6A even though No. 2 Westlake lost 71-65 to Class 5A No. 2 Tri-Cities at Hoops 4 Hunger, Jalal McKie pouring in 28 points in the loss. No. 5 Osborne held off Dacula 76-72 at the DT Invitational while No. 10 Centennial defeated Alpharetta 62-40 on the road.

Eligibility and availability are a storyline in Class 5A. No. 2 Tri-Cities rises a spot after beating Class 6A No. 2 Westlake 71-65 behind Kory Mincy’s 20 points, Kennesaw State-signee Simeon Cottle’s 18 and 15 apiece out of Kyndon Wilburg and Noricco Danner. No. 3 Jonesboro was upset by Carrollton 77-66 but were missing four key contributors not even including Forest Park transfers Jaquez Akins and Montez Redding. At the bottom of the poll, No. 9 Warner Robins romped Greenbrier 71-31 at Hooping in Middle Georgia. Rashaun Williams (4) and Jordyan Keith (6) combined for 10 threes, Williams netting 22 points and Keith finishing with 16 as four Demons reached double figures.

It was a busy weekend for Class 4A No. 2 McDonough. The WarHawks trounced Forest Park 74-32 before holding off South Paulding at the Sandy’s Spiel Tip-Off Classic, closing on an 11-3 run to secure a 55-47 victory. Da’Avion Thomas dazzled with 19 points, 10 rebounds, 6 assists and 2 steals, making an immediate impact after having to sit out last season due to transfer rules. No. 4 Fayette County retains their possession after a 94-72 loss to Class 7A No. 8 Norcross at the DT Invitational, Indiana-signee Kaleb Banks scoring 28 points in the loss followed by Tariq Mumphrey’s 20 points off 6 threes. The south got busy on opening week, No. 5 Monroe beating No. 10 Dougherty 67-47 at the DOCO Tip-Off Classic. No. 9 Westover earned a 52-46 win over Lee County at the same event. No. 6 Mays is up a spot following a 70-55 win at Banneker at Hoops 4 Hunger. Mykel Williams earned game MVP with 23 points, 5 rebounds, 7 assists and 6 steals. Saulamon Evans tallied 22 points, 9 rebounds, 4 assists and 5 steals. No. 7 Cedar Shoals fell 52-37 at Southwest DeKalb in the SWD Showcase and drops one spot.

Not much happened in Class 3A but there were three interesting outcomes. No. 7 Peach County lost 83-77 to Class 2A No. 3 Westside-Augusta at Hooping in Middle Georgia as Temarius Mathis scored 33 in the loss. No. 3 Salem beat WD Mohammed 68-56 at the Georgia Elite 8 Tip-Off Classic while No. 10 Johnson-Savannah forced their way into the rankings with a gritty 70-62 win over 7A West Forsyth at the Sandy’s Spiel Tip-Off Classic, rallying to erase a 10-point deficit heading into the fourth quarter, using a 19-2 run and a 32-14 frame to race past the host school. One night removed from the football field, Ted Hurst led the way with 24 points, 6 rebounds and 2 steals while Antonio Baker poured in 22 points, 2 assists and 5 steals. Demond Hendrix was a sparkplug with 11 points, 4 rebounds, 6 assists and 2 steals as the Atomsmashers pressed their way to an impressive season-opening win. Johnson-Savannah pushes idle Lakeview-Fort Oglethorpe out of the Top 10.

The rankings remain the same in Class 2A after No. 3 Westside-Augusta knocked off Class 3A No. 7 Peach County 83-77 with AuMauri Tillman dumping in 32 points and Demarco Middleton netting 16. Region 4 rival No. 4 Butler lost 63-55 to Jones County at the same event.

The bottom of Class A-Private sees some shifting. Walker (0-1) struggled in a 58-51 loss to Heritage School, bouncing them from the poll. They are replaced by No. 8 WD Mohammed who beat Camp Jewell House 77-63 before losing 68-56 to Class 3A No. 3 Salem at the Georgia Elite 8 Tip-Off Classic. Against Camp Jewell House, Bilal Abdur-Rahman exploded for 41 points, 6 rebounds, 7 assists and 4 steals while Amir Boyce collected 18 points, 13 rebounds and 2 blocks. No. 10 Mt. Pisgah slips three spots following a 76-54 loss to Shiloh at the DT Invitational. At the top of the poll, No. 1 Providence Christian smashed Strong Rock Christian 95-35, No. 2 Galloway earned wins over Wilson Academy (68-53) and Brandon Hall (70-33) while Caleb Smith scored 21 points to power No. 3 Greenforest past McEachern at the Georgia Elite 8 Tip-Off Classic 74-69.

In Class A-Public, No. 1 Drew Charter beat Woodward Academy 75-52 at Hoops 4 Hunger while No. 3 Portal dispatched of Forest Park 52-40 at the Sandy’s Spiel Tip-Off Classic. Sophomores Amir Jackson and Elijah Coleman dominated, Jackson posting 23 points, 11 rebounds and 2 steals while Coleman recorded 19 points, 5 rebounds, 4 assists and 4 steals.
