Week 1 of the GHSA season is in the books as 30 of 80 Preseason Top 10 teams were in action. Ranked programs went to battle at events such as Georgia’s Elite 8 Tip-Off Classic, the Double Trouble Invitational, The Opener, Hoops4Hunger, the Meadowcreek Tip-Off Classic, the Blockbuster Classic, the Southwest DeKalb Showdown and The Battle of Gwinnett.

Six Top 10 teams tipped off their season in Class 6A leading to no movement in the poll. At Georgia’s Elite 8 Tip-Off Classic, No. 1 Grayson pounded Wilson Academy 77-51 behind Caleb Holt’s 21 points, Amir Taylor’s 19 and 14 apiece from UGA-commit Jacob Wilkins and Jayvon Rampersant. No. 2 Wheeler routed Class 3A No. 1 Cedar Grove 75-54, a game in which the Wildcats led by over 30. In the nightcap, No. 4 Newton survived host No. 7 McEachern 62-60 as Marcus Smith II led the Rams with 21 points to overcome a strong performance from Jayden Bynes. Over at the Double Trouble Invitational, No. 3 Norcross rolled Westlake 83-54 as Connor Teasley (25) and Miles Clanton (22) powered the Blue Devils. In Houston at the RCS Sports Season Opener, No. 6 Pebblebrook scored a pair of wins, beating Houston Christian 53-39 and Aldine, TX 67-43.

There are some early changes in the Class 5A poll. No. 3 Woodward Academy blasted Rabun Gap 74-42 at Hoops4Hunger, Deke Cooper with 20 points, 5 rebounds and 2 steals. No. 4 Langston Hughes lost 49-33 to Private No. 2 Greenforest. It took three overtimes for No. 5 Lee County to escape Westover 81-69. No. 6 Winder-Barrow moves up two spots with a 77-53 win against Cedar Shoals at The Opener, Jerrin Samuel finishing with 18 points, 7 rebounds and 4 assists while older brother Jordan Samuel flirted with a triple-double, recording 17 points, 14 rebounds and 9 blocks. No. 7 Gainesville climbs two spaces following a 58-44 win over Dutchtown at the Elite 8 Tip-Off Classic. KJ White had 15 points, 6 assists and 5 steals. No. 8 Habersham Central also rises two positions with a 75-70 victory against Dacula at The Battle of Gwinnett, Enzo Combs finishing with 26 points while Josiah McCurry added 18.

Football absences and early season injuries are dictating Class 4A. Jonesboro (0-1) slides from No. 4 to unranked as they lost at the Meadowcreek Tip-Off Classic to debutant No. 7 Eagle’s Landing 79-56 as the Cardinals were without six of their top eight players, a chunk missing due to the football playoffs while impact freshmen 6-foot-8 Tenaje Freeman and 5-foot-11 Calvin Goss suffered serious injuries that will hold them out for weeks. In the loss Tim Prather netted 28 points while the Eagles were paced by Tyson Moore (23), Micah Medley (16) and Hannibal Smith (13). Once Jonesboro returns their core, expect the Cardinals to leap back into the Top 10. No. 3 Kell made an early statement at the Georgia Elite 8 Tip-Off Classic, drilling Chapel Hill 69-46 behind Zach Graves’ 16 points, 3 rebounds and 5 assists. No. 4 McDonough, who rises two slots, defeated North Atlanta 65-51 at the Meadowcreek Tip-Off Classic, freshman Kerrington Moore scoring a team-high 17 points. No. 6 Maynard Jackson moves up one place following a 65-46 victory against Veterans at the Blockbuster Classic while No. 8 Marist slipped past Dunwoody 52-46.

No changes are found in Class 3A. No. 1 Cedar Grove maintains their spot after getting blitzed by Class 6A No. 2 Wheeler 75-54 at the Elite 8 Tip-Off Classic. No. 3 Dougherty took care of Monroe 66-47.

Class 2A remains untouched after two Top 10 results. No. 1 Columbia waxed Hapeville Charter 79-32 while No. 2 Carver-Columbus toppled Cambridge 75-44 at the Meadowcreek Tip-Off Classic, freshman TJ Woodson collecting 14 points and 6 steals while Tobiaz Tolbert racked up 10 points, 15 rebounds and 6 blocks and Troy-commit Tony Montgomery tallied 8 points, 12 assists and 6 steals.

Three teams were in action in Class A D-I leading to no movement. No. 2 BEST Academy won their debut without 6-foot-10 Fallou Dioum who transferred to Pebblebrook at the last second, beating Duluth 47-40 at the Meadowcreek Tip-Off Classic. Jacob Mickell recorded 18 points, 5 rebounds, 3 assists, 3 steals and 2 blocks while Nicholas Dozier had 12 points and 4 rebounds. Josh Mickell chipped in 7 points, 4 rebounds, 2 steals and 1 block. No. 8 Woodville-Tompkins edged South Effingham 66-61, the Mustangs 0-22 a season ago. No. 10 Banks County lost a shootout with North Hall at The Opener, 89-83.

The poll in Class A D-II remains the same as only No. 1 Savannah was in action, winning against Meadowcreek at the Meadowcreek Tip-Off Classic 54-45.

Early changes have occurred in Class 3A-1A Private. No. 2 Greenforest took care of business, stifling Class 5A No. 4 Langston Hughes 49-33. No. 5 Paideia rises a spot with a 68-67 win against Berkmar at the Elite 8 Tip-Off Classic while No. 6 St. Francis sinks a position, downed at the Double Trouble Invitational by South Gwinnett 82-71. Out of the poll are Mt. Bethel (0-1) and Hebron Christian (0-1). The Eagles lost at the DT Invitational 46-38 to Johns Creek while the Lions fell 52-49 to Wesleyan at The Battle of Gwinnett.  Into the poll is No. 7 Lovett, fresh off a 71-67 win against Osborne at the DT Invitational where Cameron Cannon tallied 21 points, 5 rebounds, 3 assists and 3 steals and No. 8 GAC who beat Shiloh at The Battle of Gwinnett 55-36, Mike Carpenter with 17 points.
