With regular season play nearly complete, some teams are improving weekly while others have been stagnant, peaking too early in the year.Will the real contenders please stand up in Class 7A? Parity has been great for the classification since the Westlake dynasty finished its run. There are plenty of teams that can win the title but on paper, the best resume by far belongs to No. 1 Brookwood, but once again they had to survive a scare against No. 9 Grayson who breaks into the rankings for the first time this season following a tight 46-38 loss. The Rams, a preseason Top 3 team before losing Erin Rodgers to an ACL tear, have been sneaky good as they have learned to play without their star. Currently locked into the three-seed in the vaunted Region 4, coaching and the emergence of Tatum Brown and Samara Saunders has helped the Rams compete against teams with deeper rosters pushing Brookwood to the brink twice and taking down former Class 5A No. 1 Griffin and current No. 1 Baldwin. The Rams get a shot at further upsetting the applecart on Tuesday as they host No. 2 Archer, who they lost to 63-52 on the road. No. 3 Hillgrove leapfrogs six spots after completing a season sweep of rival No. 6 McEachern, winning 60-56 on the road in overtime. At 17-5, the Hawks have no bad losses all to ranked teams, their worst an early 74-57 defeat at the hands of Class 4A No. 3 Holy Innocents’. Hillgrove has six wins against ranked opponents. No. 4 Norcross climbs two spots after drilling No. 10 Peachtree Ridge 49-26, dropping the Lions six spots. Peachtree Ridge didn’t bounce back well, winning at the buzzer at North Gwinnett 42-41. No. 5 Buford was down 25 points after three quarters in their blowout 72-58 loss at Class 3A No. 3 Wesleyan, pushing the Wolves down three spots. Campbell (19-3) has lost momentum since losing Brooke Suttle to injury, out of the Top 10 following a 66-45 loss at Pebblebrook.

Class 6A sees shakeup thanks to Region 3. No. 6 Forest Park’s tight grip of the one-seed has disappeared after losing 72-54 at No. 3 Woodard Academy, dropping the Panthers four spots as three teams are now tied with two region losses. No. 2 Lovejoy leaps over both after winning 63-57 at No. 7 Rockdale County who is now 1-5 vs. the aforementioned teams. Outside the region of doom, No. 5 Brunswick rises two spots with a 51-43 win over South Effingham. No. 8 Veterans squeezed out a 52-49 win at Lee County before going on the road to top Class 3A No. 9 Peach County 63-51 behind Desteyn Seaton’s 21 points. No. 9 North Forsyth moves up with a 56-22 win at Lanier while No. 10 Tift County slides a slot after a nail-biting 51-50 win at Thomas County Central.

Region 1 is taking over Class 5A with four teams now in the poll. No. 4 Bradwell Institute had a big week, beating No. 9 Ware County 50-42 and No. 6 Greenbrier 46-40. Ware County then lost to Greenbrier 48-31, dropping the Gators two positions while the Wolfpack leap three spots. No. 10 Statesboro is back in the rankings after a one-week hiatus, scoring wins over Coffee (63-34) and Swainsboro (52-35), Alyssa Staten recording her first career triple-double against the Trojans with 17 points, 20 rebounds and 10 blocks. Statesboro will either sink or swim, their toughest week of the season coming in the final week as they have three road games against Greenbrier, Ware County and Bradwell Institute to officially determine seeding heading into the region tournament. Away from Region 1, No. 3 Warner Robins knocked Jones County (17-6) out of the Top 10 with a 50-38 victory. The Greyhounds also lost 34-31 to Eagle’s Landing to seal their fate. No. 7 Calhoun springs up three spots with a 66-50 win at Dalton. No. 8 Arabia Mountain remains somewhat of an enigma, anchored at number eight. The Rams have undeniable talent in the backcourt, but play in one of the worst regions in the state and didn’t schedule much stronger outside. Region 4 is a combined 39-74 with only competition Decatur buoying the results with a 15-7 record, who the Rams host on Tuesday. Arabia Mountain has played two ranked teams all year, splitting losing 64-58 to Class 4A No. 10 Walnut Grove and beating Class 3A No. 7 Cross Creek 62-40.

No. 1 Baldwin takes over in Class 4A after handling No. 2 Griffin 62-45 in Milledgeville as Janaye Walker posted 14 points, 26 rebounds, 4 assists, 2 steals and 4 blocks. The Bravettes’ non-region schedule is starting to pay dividends as they have reeled off nine-straight wins, jumping three spots to the top. No. 4 Luella earned a 49-42 win against No. 6 Stockbridge. No. 5 Hardaway breaks into the Top 5 with a 66-22 win at Cairo but more importantly a 45-35 No. 7 Westminster loss to Marist, sinking the Wildcats two positions. No. 10 Walnut Grove drops two places with a 61-54 loss to East Forsyth while Chestatee (16-6) falls out completely, beaten 66-58 at East Forsyth. No. 9 North Hall remerges on a six-game winning streak, edging Union County 55-49 to ignite a 3-0 week.

The tides may be shifting in Class 3A just a bit as No. 1 Hebron Christian is rumored to have lost two transfers. No. 3 Wesleyan is scorching-hot after their nightmare in Dahlonega, blasting No. 5 White County 68-43 before Chit-Chat Wright tore apart last week’s Class 7A No. 2 Buford with 27 points, 4 rebounds and 4 assists in a 72-58 rout. No. 4 Carver-Columbus is playing good basketball, back to dominating West Georgia with a 94-34 win over Dougherty moving the Tigers up two slots. No. 6 Lakeview-Fort Oglethorpe had their hands full with a 48-41 win at Bremen. No. 8 Pickens pulled away from Dawson County 46-37 while No. 9 Peach County beat Mary Persons 46-35 before losing 63-51 to Class 6A No. 8 Veterans.

There are no changes to the Class 2A Top 10. No. 2 Central-Macon got 19 points, 5 rebounds and 5 steals from Taliah Grier in their 46-28 win against Northeast-Macon. No. 5 Josey held on against rival Laney 59-54. No. 6 Landmark Christian slipped past Callaway 54-50 while No. 7 Dodge County escaped Hawkinsville with a 43-38 victory.

In Class A D-I, No. 1 St. Francis won 62-41 at New Manchester. No. 3 Rabun County drilled 17 threes at Tallulah Falls for an 84-47 blowout. No. 4 Elbert County won at Tallulah Falls 73-55. Darlington (18-5) falls out after a bad 33-31 loss at 9-14 Dade County. Ranked for the first time since Week 5, No. 10 Heard County cracks back in fresh off a 57-30 win at Crawford County.

No. 6 Towns County is clicking in Class A D-II, avenging an early 73-71 double overtime loss at Hiwassee Dam, NC, beating the Eagles 53-46 this week. No. 7 Schley County moves up following a 56-46 win against Macon County. No. 8 Randolph-Clay has emerged as the team to beat in Region 1 for the time being, winning six-straight including beating Calhoun County 42-38. In sub-region B, No. 9 Early County returns to the poll following a 59-54 win against Mitchell County. No. 10 Mt. Zion-Carrollton falls three spots with losses to Paulding County (53-45) and Bremen (35-31) while Manchester (13-7) slides all the way out with a 75-55 loss to No. 5 Taylor County.
