The fifth annual Sandy’s Spiel Showcase did not disappoint, proving to be the ultimate stage for in-season girls basketball exposure in the state of Georgia with 24 college programs in attendance including 13 D-I schools.

Six teams included in last week’s Class 7A Top 10 were in action at the Sandy’s Spiel Showcase but now only four survive. No. 1 Grayson dismantled No. 8 North Paulding 75-37, dropping the Wolfpack two spots. Georgia Tech-signee Danielle Carnegie collected 17 points, 6 rebounds and 4 assists while Nicholls State-signee Malaya Jones scored 17 points and Florida Atlantic-signee Erin Rodgers contributed 12 points and 8 rebounds. No. 5 Buford found themselves down 26-18 in the second quarter to Class 2A No. 4 Central-Macon before racing away with a 27-12 third quarter to win 77-55 as Ohio State-signee Ava Grace Watson tallied 23 points, 8 rebounds, 6 assists and 9 steals. No. 6 Milton knocked Newton (4-3) out of the rankings, beating the Rams 62-42 to climb two spots. Appalachian State-signee Nya Smith poured in 25 points while Caroline Young added 14 points and 9 rebounds and Londyn Walker recorded 4 points, 9 rebounds and 10 assists. Newton’s ceiling will unfortunately not be met this year as star freshman London Smith and D-I prospect Desiree Davis are both out with ACL tears. Hillgrove (5-6) slips from the rankings, losing 52-49 to returnee No. 9 Campbell who is back in the poll for the first time since the preseason. The Hawks also lost 45-34 to Class 5A No. 2 Union Grove at the Sandy’s Spiel Showcase, freshman Ashley Harris with 14 of Hillgrove’s 16 second half points. Outside of the Sandy’s Spiel Showcase, No. 3 Norcross was destroyed by Class 3A No. 1 Hebron Christian 82-43 at the Hawks-Naismith Classic while No. 4 Carrollton blasted last week’s Class 5A No. 10 Hiram 66-38.  No. 7 Cherokee suffered a 69-46 loss to Class A D-I No. 1 St. Francis at the Sewer Classic. Making their debut in the Top 10 is No. 10 Mill Creek. The Hawks are 8-0 coming off a 47-33 win at Class 5A No. 6 Jefferson, holding the Dragons to just 10 second half points while Bella Ragone erupted for 27 points, 18 rebounds, 3 assists, 2 steals and 1 block.

The top of Class 6A had some big games this past week. No. 1 River Ridge blew past No. 8 Sequoyah 68-43 and bounced Creekview (6-3) from the Top 10 with a 70-23 win before losing to Class 3A No. 2 Wesleyan 69-65 at the Sandy’s Spiel Showcase, unable to corral Georgia Tech-signee Chit-Chat Wright in the fourth quarter. Freshman Finley Parker delivered on the big stage with 17 points, 8 rebounds and 5 assists while Makayla Roberson (16) and Sophia Pearl (15) combined for 31 points and dished out five assists apiece. No. 2 Langston Hughes rises a spot after toppling No. 3 New Manchester on the road 58-50 before blowing out last week’s Class 4A No. 3 Trinity Christian 79-38. No. 6 Woodward Academy defeated Hoover, AL 75-69. No. 7 Veterans beat Class A D-I No. 7 Swainsboro 50-39 while No. 9 Lakeside-Evans lost to North Augusta, SC 48-28. No. 10 Tift County is back in the poll fresh off a 52-29 win at Coffee and holding a 63-31 win at Valdosta last week, the 7-1 Wildcats’ only loss.

Class 5A No. 2 Union Grove notched another win over a Top 10 opponent, locking down last week’s Class 7A No. 9 Hillgrove 45-34 at the Sandy’s Spiel Showcase, Jordan Brooks and Nadea Smith taking over down the stretch as Brooks tallied 12 points, 4 rebounds, 5 assists and 4 steals while Smith posted 14 points and 9 rebounds. No. 4 Warner Robins slipped by Jones County 43-38 on the road. No. 6 Jefferson rises two spots with a 1-1 week, beating Class 3A No. 8 Hart County 61-48 but falling to Class 7A No. 10 Mill Creek 47-33. No. 10 Harris County kept pace with Class 3A No. 3 Carver-Columbus for one half, leading 35-34 at the break before running out of gas and losing 82-57 in Columbus. Dalton (4-5) is out of the rankings, waiting the return of North Georgia-signee Grace Ridley. The Catamounts avenged an earlier loss to Heritage-Catoosa 47-33 but lost 37-35 at home to Northwest Whitfield. Hiram (6-2) couldn’t last a week in the poll, downed 66-38 at Class 7A No. 4 Carrollton before losing 65-47 at South Paulding. Region 1 crowds the bottom of the rankings as No. 8 Bradwell Institute makes their first appearance of the season riding Parris Parham (21 ppg, 9.3 rpg, 2.5 apg, 3.7 spg, 1.8 bpg) to a 6-0 start. Away from the Sandy’s Spiel Showcase, No. 5 Southwest DeKalb rose two spots with a 60-43 win at Westlake while No. 6 Trinity Christian dropped three spots, edging Northgate 55-42 before losing 79-38 to Class 6A No. 2 Langston Hughes, the Lions looking vulnerable with Ivona Djikanovic missing in action as the team is reportedly currently under investigation. East Forsyth (5-3) is replaced by Region 8 foe No. 10 Cherokee Bluff who trounced the Broncos 62-30.

Only the bottom of the poll changes in Class 3A. At the top, No. 1 Hebron Christian hammered Class 7A No. 3 Norcross 82-43 at the Hawks-Naismith Classic. No. 2 Wesleyan built a 13-0 lead and never looked back in a 78-66 win over No. 6 White County, before rallying past Class 6A No. 1 River Ridge at the Sandy’s Spiel Showcase 69-65, Georgia Tech-signee Chit-Chat Wright exploding for 16 of her game-high 36 points in the fourth quarter to pair with her 10 rebounds, 4 assists and 4 steals. Class 2A No. 4 Central-Macon came out guns a blazing against Class 7A No. 5 Buford at the Sandy’s Spiel Showcase, building a 16-8 first quarter lead and 26-18 second quarter advantage before heading into the break down 35-32 following an Ava Grace Watson halfcourt three. The Buford press wilted the Chargers quickly in the third quarter, outscoring Central-Macon 27-12 and eventually cruising to a 77-55 victory. Alaya Grane poured in 16 points, 5 rebounds, 8 assists, 3 steals and 2 blocks. The Chargers also received 14 points from Taliah Grier and 13 from Jazlyn Johnson, both getting positive reviews from D-I coaches in attendance. No. 7 Murray County won at No. 8 Model 43-39, the Blue Devils however without top shooter Sadie Raughton, a returning First Team All-Region selection who has been out with an injury. No. 9 Dodge County was without five players including star post Lyric Green due to flag football in their 44-33 loss at newly ranked Class A D-II No. 9 Wilcox County.
