Unlike on the boys side, many of the top girls programs across the state were quiet to end 2020. The action will heat back up this week, but four out of the eight classifications see no movement whatsoever. But even with a slow final full week of the year, there are still plenty of storylines to look forward to in 2021.

Only No. 2 McEachern suited up in Class 7A. The Indians hammered Norcross 71-46 at the Norcross Holiday Invitational before edging Class 6A No. 4 Carrollton at the Carrollton Christmas Classic 53-49 as UGA-signee Jillian Hollingshead was the difference maker with 22 points (9-12 FG), 14 rebounds, 3 assists, 2 steals and 3 blocks. Things are starting to click for the Indians with Hollingshead averaging 17 points, 11.6 rebounds, 3.1 assists, 1.1 steals and 3.6 blocks followed by Indiana State-signee Denim DeShields’ 12.8 points, 5 rebounds, 5.8 assists and 2.9 steals.

In the long-awaited rematch of last year’s thrilling 55-52 Lion win, No. 1 Westlake pounded No. 2 Lovejoy through three quarters before holding on for a 58-47 win in Region 4-6A. The Lions led 47-26 after 24 minutes of play. 6-foot senior Misia McKinney, who I thought could have a breakout season back when I saw her in July, was the X-Factor posting career-highs of 18 points and 10 rebounds in the win. Ta’Niya Latson added 18 points, 6 assists and 4 steals while South Carolina-signee Raven Johnson tallied 14 points, 9 rebounds, 6 assists and 4 steals. Virginia Tech-commit Brianna Turnage finished with 6 points, 9 rebounds, 3 assists and 3 blocks. Lovejoy was led by Mariah Spain’s 13 points and La’Nya Foster’s 12. No. 3 Kell jumps two spots after No. 4 Carrollton lost 53-49 to Class 7A No. 2 McEachern and while No. 5 Buford sat dormant for another week, their last game having been played on December 1. No. 8 Rockdale County holds firm. The Bulldogs fell 51-35 to Class A-Private No. 3 Mt. Paran at the Carrollton Christmas Classic before beating Class 5A No. 7 Maynard Jackson 52-44. No. 9 Johns Creek sinks two spots after losses to Brookwood (61-58) and South Forsyth (57-40). The Gladiators rebounded with a 56-24 win vs. Mill Creek to end the week. Cambridge (8-3) is out of the poll after a precipitous drop. Last week I wrote about the signs on the wall of something being amiss with the Bears. Even though at the time they were 8-0, Cambridge dropped two spots after struggling to beat Allatoona in overtime. This past week over in Dahlonega at the Kelly King Holiday Classic, Cambridge saw a step up in competition and struggled to compete after an opening 51-47 loss to North Gwinnett, losing to Class 2A No. 2 Rabun County 60-36 and Class 3A No. 3 Lumpkin County 64-39. They are replaced by debutant No. 10 Heritage-Conyers. The Patriots are a veteran group led by Bethune-Cookman-signee Sade Harrell (13.5 ppg, 7 rpg, 2.9 apg, 4.6 spg) and Columbus State-commit Kristyn Goshay (9.1 ppg, 4.3 rpg, 2.6 apg, 4.3 spg).

Class 5A was treated to a Top 3 showdown as No. 1 Forest Park grinded out a 41-31 win over No. 3 Southwest DeKalb. South Carolina-signee Sania Feagin recorded 12 points, 11 rebounds, 4 assists, 5 steals and 6 blocks while UT Arlington-signee Olympia Chaney netted 12 points. No. 4 Cass won the SMI Carroll County Christmas Classic Championship over Bowdon 68-46 behind Londaisha Smith’s 20 points, 12 rebounds and 10 steals. Keara McDaniel added 18 points. Before losing 52-44 to Class 6A No. 8 Rockdale County, No. 7 Maynard Jackson hammered Sandy Creek 74-35. Tri-Cities (7-1) exits the Top 10 following a surprise 56-32 loss to Duluth. Debuting is No. 10 St. Pius X. The Golden Lions will either sink or swim as they will be tested right away against Class 7A No. 9 Grayson and Class 4A No. 8 Baldwin.

There is no movement in Class 4A as only No. 1 Jefferson and No. 2 Troup County were in action. The Dragons went 2-0 at North Murray Mistletoe Madness, beating Calhoun 84-62 before surviving 4-6 McMinn County, TN 74-72 behind Deshona Gaither’s 24 points, North Georgia-signee Livi Blackstock’s 17 and Allianne Clark’s 15. Troup County blasted Columbia 61-28 at the Carrollton Christmas Classic. Now winners of four straight, the Tigers will play Class 6A No. 4 Carrollton on Saturday.

Class 3A is evolving as a shift of power seems to be moving up north. No. 6 Beach sinks three spots after losing 54-40 to Class A-Private No. 9 Calvary Day. Climbing four spots is No. 3 Lumpkin County, who looked sharp at their Kelly King Holiday Classic beating last week’s Class 2A No. 9 Fannin County 61-27, Mill Creek 42-27 and last week’s Class 6A No. 10 Cambridge 64-39. North Georgia-signee Isabel Davenport was named Tournament MVP after averaging 14.3 points while freshman Averie Jones made All-Tournament Team at 11.6 points per game. Down in Middle Georgia, No. 8 Upson-Lee picked up another win over Lamar County 60-51. No. 10 Douglass slips a spot after beating Druid Hills 43-34 but losing to Trinity Christian 51-41 at the Battle in Buckhead. Sonoraville (5-2) falls out following a 62-44 loss to McMinn County, TN at the North Murray Mistletoe Madness Tournament. Back into the rankings is No. 9 Gilmer. The undefeated Bobcats were a hard luck squeeze out a week ago.

Class 2A No. 2 Rabun County ran through the competition at the Kelly King Holiday Classic, picking up wins over Class 7A Mill Creek (48-45) and North Gwinnett (54-49) with a drumming of last week’s Class 6A No. 10 Cambridge 60-36 sandwiched in between. Freshmen Ellie Southards and Lucy Hood did damage in their blowout of Cambridge, Southards collecting 18 points and 11 rebounds while Hood tallied 10 points, 5 rebounds, 4 assists and 2 steals. Hood along with Sophie Woodard and Carley Haban were named to the All-Tournament Team. Fellow Region 8 foe No. 4 Elbert County rises over inactive No. 5 Washington County. The Blue Devils beat North Oconee (54-33), Walnut Grove (53-16) and Commerce (47-44). They head to Hartwell for the McDonald’s Shootout where they will battle Class 5A No. 6 Loganville in Round 1 on Monday. Fannin County (6-3) departs from the poll following a 61-27 loss to Class 3A No. 3 Lumpkin County. Into the rankings for the first time this season is No. 10 Banks County. The Lady Leopards have been fortunate to play a ton of games and have battled a stingy schedule. Sitting at 9-5, Banks County has only lost to Class A-Private No. 7 Wesleyan, Class 4A No. 1 Jefferson twice, 3-1 Class 7A Brookwood and 7-3 Class 4A East Hall, who they have split with. The Leopards picked up wins over Chestatee (61-46) and Cherokee Bluff (51-34) this past week. A balanced attack has paced Banks County led by 5-foot-7 senior Jenna Reeves (14.6 ppg, 4.6 rpg, 2.4 apg), 5-foot-6 sophomore Jacy Ayers (12 ppg, 6.5 rpg, 2 apg, 2.9 spg) and 6-foot sophomore Kamryn Grier (10.6 ppg, 10.9 rpg, 1.9 bpg), who has emerged as one of the better young posts in North Georgia.

Everything remains status quo in Class A-Private with no changes to be seen. No. 1 St. Francis lost 48-47 to New Hope, MD at the United Bank Holiday Invitational before finishing their trip with a 57-50 win over Camden, SC to win third-place, Erica Moon posting 16 points, 4 rebounds and 8 steals. No. 5 Hebron Christian captured fifth-place with wins over Northwood Academy, SC (77-48) and First Baptist School, SC (62-15). Samford-signee Nicole Azar netted 17 points while Rice-bound big Malia Fisher added 14 in the tournament finale. No. 3 Mt. Paran stayed in Georgia and earned a nice win over Class 6A No. 8 Rockdale County 51-35 at the Carrollton Christmas Classic, Kara Dunn erupting for 37 points, 7 rebounds and 4 blocks. No. 6 Galloway went 2-0 at their Battle in Buckhead event, crushing Whitewater 65-30 before beating Pebblebrook 57-43. No. 9 Calvary Day notched a signature win over Class 3A No. 6 Beach 54-40 as Mahkayla Premo posted 15 points, 6 assists and 7 steals while Hannah Cail tossed in 13 points, 4 assists and 4 steals. Tynley Smeltzer finished with 11 points and 10 rebounds.

Class A-Public stays the same with no movement. No. 1 Calhoun County drilled Chattahoochee County 71-15. No. 5 Clinch County opened the season with a 45-33 loss to Ware County but were without two starters including All-State wing Angel McRae. Zyhia Johnson dumped in 25 points in the loss. No. 7 GMC hasn’t blown teams out but they won again, this time beating Mt. de Sales 46-38.
