It was a slow week in Georgia as not many teams played heading into Christmas break, but there still is a little movement in a few classifications although no new teams appear. Class 7A was fairly busy early in the week but there are no changes. No. 2 Pebblebrook closed out the Tarkanian Classic with wins over Greenville, TX (73-69) and West Ranch, CA (92-62). Down at City of Palms, No. 3 Berkmar took a forfeit loss due to sickness precaution while No. 4 Milton hung tough, beating Calvary Christian, FL 67-62 before dropping to nationally-ranked juggernauts Montverde Academy, FL 59-44 and IMG Academy, FL 76-73. No. 6 North Gwinnett won the red bracket at the Lemon Street Classic after beating Class 6A No. 9 Alexander 64-56 and Langston Hughes 54-53. No. 7 Norcross didn’t play this week, but 6-foot-9 sophomore Aiden Sherrell has transferred from the program and has left the state, marking the fifth player to depart since last season. No. 8 Grayson defeated Class 5A No. 1 Eagle’s Landing at Play For A Change 59-56, but lost to Class A-Private No. 1 Greenforest 55-51. No. 9 South Gwinnett suffered their first loss in the Kreul Classic Championship, 62-51 to Bergen Catholic, NJ.

Not a creature was stirring, not even a mouse in Class 6A. Only two teams took to the floor as No. 1 Buford beat Brookwood 73-40 and Discovery 61-46 while No. 9 Alexander finished the Lemon Street Classic with a 64-56 loss to Class 7A No. 6 North Gwinnett and a 70-62 win over Etowah.

No. 1 Eagle’s Landing went 0-2 at Play For a Change, the Class 5A defending state champ losing to Class 7A No. 8 Grayson 59-56 and to Class 2A No. 2 Pace Academy 70-67.  No. 5 Southwest DeKalb holds tight following a 2-1 week at the Morris Bank Holiday Classic, their most noteworthy result a 59-55 loss to Class 2A No. 3 Washington County. No. 9 Walnut Grove slips two spots with a 59-56 loss to First Presbyterian Day at the Coach Mac Classic. No. 8 Lithia Springs rises with a pair of wins at the Carrollton Holiday Classic beating Starr’s Mill (68-42) and Carrollton (58-50). No. 10 Lithonia split at the Lemon Street Classic, beating Cedar Shoals 57-47 but losing to Grovetown 36-30.

The U-Save-It Classic changed the complexion of Class 4A but outside of South Georgia, No. 1 McDonough captured the Morris Bank Holiday Classic Championship with wins over Jones County (69-61) and Class 2A No. 3 Washington County (57-39). Dougherty County however, was the epicenter of basketball this past week. No. 2 Westover springs up five spots after pulling away from No. 3 Baldwin 65-56 and closing the U-Save-It Classic with a 54-46 win against Perry. Effrin Smith scored 16 points and Kemari Levertte buried four three-pointers in the win over the defending state champs. Baldwin bounced back with a 50-46 victory over Dougherty while No. 8 Monroe but together a 2-0 week on their home floor, trouncing Perry 67-37 and edging Southeast Lauderdale, FL 58-47. Up in Cumming, No. 10 Marist lost at South Forsyth 58-57 to sink a spot.

There is significant shuffling in Class 3A with No. 3 Sumter County climbing seven spots after winning the Lemon Street Classic green bracket, escaping River Ridge 58-56 before taking down Cypress Bay, FL 38-35. No. 4 Salem went 1-1 at the Lemon Street Classic with a 62-46 win over Blythewood, SC and a 63-54 loss to Cumberland Christian. No. 7 Cross Creek fell to Byrnes, SC 65-62 at the Cayce Roundball Classic but rebounded with wins over Spring Valley, SC (64-38) and Sumter, SC (54-48) as Antoine Lorick was named to the All-Tournament Team after averaging 14.3 points, 7 rebounds and 1.5 blocks.

Class 2A No. 2 Pace Academy dropped to Class A-Private No. 1 Greenforest 56-50 at Play For A Change but closed the event with a 70-67 win over Class 5A No. 1 Eagle’s Landing. No. 3 Washington County rises four places with a strong showing at the Morris Bank Holiday Classic, edging Class 5A No. 5 Southwest DeKalb 59-55 and No. 5 Butler 53-48 before losing in the title game to Class 4A No. 1 McDonough 57-39. Butler also lost to Jones County 61-59 as the Bulldogs slip two spots. No. 8 Rabun County is clicking on all cylinders with their football players back, scoring road wins over Cherokee Bluff (72-55) and Commerce (66-46).

Class A-Private holds firm as there are no changes to the poll. No. 1 Greenforest is separating themselves from the pack, earning great wins at Play For A Change beating Class 2A No. 2 Pace Academy 56-50 and Class 7A No. 8 Grayson 55-51. No. 4 North Cobb Christian went 2-0 at the Lemon Street Classic, knocking off North Clayton 88-39 and host Marietta 57-53. Sophomore Jax Abernathy shattered records for No. 7 Christian Heritage in their 73-70 win over Hamilton Heights, TN, pouring in 53 points going 8-10 from three, 11-13 from two and 7-9 from the foul line.

There is no movement in Class A-Public. No. 4 Lanier County won the Auto-Owner Brookwood Holiday Hoops Classic beating Miller County (67-59), Brookwood, GISA (60-59) and Terrell Academy (50-46). No. 8 Chattahoochee County outlasted Crisp County 56-53 at the Charles Ivey Classic while No. 10 Turner County netted a pair of wins at the Ronalda Pierce Classic, defeating Wilcox County (50-32) and Berrien (47-37).
