Unfortunately, COVID is starting to creep back into the GHSA picture during the Winter months and negatively impact scheduling. The final week of 2021 will hopefully bring health and will undoubtedly provide us with some major movement heading into 2022 with strong tournament fields ready to tip-off.Class 7A didn’t have too much going on as only four teams played resulting in no changes. No. 3 Brookwood beat a shorthanded Class 6A No. 5 Buford 49-37 while No. 5 Archer defeated Homewood, AL 60-30 at the Oak Mountain Christmas Classic before retreating back to Georgia due to COVID. No. 6 South Forsyth blasted South Gwinnett 76-50 while No. 8 Campbell was hammered by Class 6A No. 3 Carrollton 64-32 at the Carrollton Christmas Showcase before bouncing back with a key 48-46 win over Class 6A No. 7 Rockdale County as Nia Bozeman scored 16 points including the game-winning buzzer beater.

No. 3 Carrollton rises a spot in Class 6A following a 2-0 showing at the Carrollton Christmas Showcase, thumping Class 7A No. 8 Campbell 64-32 and dispatching off New Manchester 56-39. No. 5 Buford slips two spots as they await the return of Ava Grace Watson who has missed the past two games with an ankle sprain. The Wolves were defeated by Class 7A No. 3 Brookwood 49-37 without their star sophomore. No. 7 Rockdale County went 1-1 at the Carrollton Christmas Showcase, drilling Class 5A No. 10 McIntosh 62-35 before losing 48-46 to Class 7A No. 8 Campbell at the buzzer. Houston County (9-2) drops out after one week. The Bears lost 49-47 to Class 2A No. 5 Dodge County at the HoCo Bear Brawl. No. 10 Brunswick bursts into the poll after winning the Beach Ball Championship, outscoring last week’s Class A-Private No. 4 Wesleyan 78-76. Shane’ Jackson gobbled up 18 points and 20 rebounds while Shamaya Flanders had 17 points and 8 rebounds and Jamya West added 16 points and 10 rebounds.

Class 2A is fiercely competitive with major changes in the Top 10 and a handful of postseason threats waiting their turn outside the poll. Hood finished with 24 points while Emmanuel-signee Gracie Deetz netted 22 to avoid the upset. No. 5 Dodge County climbs two slots with a 49-47 win at last week’s Class 6A No. 10 Houston County at the HoCo Bear Brawl as freshman post Lyric Green dumped in 25 points. No. 7 Washington County falls two places with hard-fought 52-51 loss to Northside-Warner Robins. Idle Lamar County (8-3) gets squeezed out of the Top 10 to make way for debutant No. 10 Swainsboro. The Tigers are a real threat to elevate in the rankings rapidly. They went 2-0 at their Christmas Classic, beating previously unblemished Bulloch Academy 37-29 and stomping Class A-Public No. 9 Dublin 50-28. Swainsboro also has wins over Woodville-Tompkins and Tattnall County, two teams which have spent time ranked in their respective classifications.
