Welcome to 2024! Showcase season has nearly wrapped up as MLK Day events are the final hurdle before teams officially dig deep into region play. The Grayson New Year’s Classic featured Georgia’s very best in front of a packed house with multiple Top 10 teams in attendance.

Class 7A No. 1 Grayson thumped Brookwood 81-41 before topping North Broward Prep, FL at the Grayson New Year’s Classic 68-51 behind Purdue-signee Gicarri Harris’ 21 points, 6 rebounds, 4 assists and 2 steals. No. 2 McEachern beat Class 6A No. 1 Alexander at the New Year’s Classic 58-46 as Rutgers-signee Ace Bailey dumped in 19 points, 13 rebounds, 3 assists and 3 blocks. No. 4 Wheeler was also in action at Grayson, edging Class 6A No. 4 Langston Hughes 64-59, Kennesaw State-signee Ricky McKenzie scoring 20 points. No. 6 Newton rises a spot with wins over St. Anne-Pacelli 78-62 and at South Gwinnett 47-46 on a buzzer beater. No. 8 Dacula slides three spots with a 46-44 loss to Collins Hill. No. 9 Walton falls a position following a 64-50 loss to Lassiter. Lambert (10-5) couldn’t survive a week in the poll, losing 53-52 at Alpharetta. No. 10 Carrollton is back in the rankings for the first time since the preseason. The Trojans scored wins against East Coweta (71-63) and New Manchester (62-53) this past week.

Class 6A No. 1 Alexander fell to Class 7A No. 2 McEachern 58-46 at the Grayson New Year’s Classic, Jeremaine Freeman and Allen Stoddard leading the Cougars with 13 points apiece. No. 4 Langston Hughes was defeated by Class 7A No. 4 Wheeler at the Classic 64-59, Brentis Schaeffer finishing with 18 points, 8 rebounds, 3 assists and 2 steals. Glynn Academy (13-3) slides out of the Top 10 with a 73-61 loss at returnee No. 10 Lakeside-Evans who polished off a 3-0 week with prior victories against Orangeburg-Wilkinson, SC (49-44) and Brunswick (67-50).

There is a ton of movement in Class 5A as Region 5 turmoil has given us some market correction. Try to follow the bouncing ball: No. 6 Maynard Jackson drops four spots with their first loss of the season, beaten 74-68 by No. 5 Chapel Hill who resurfaces in the Top 10 after last appearing in Week 5. The Panthers also beat No. 7 Mays 75-65, withstanding a 42-point barrage from Derron Lindsey. The Raiders fall three spots in the poll also losing at No. 4 Tri-Cities 72-69, the Bulldogs bouncing back into the rankings after a one-week hiatus. As it currently stands, Tri-Cities is 5-0 in Region 5 play, followed by Chapel Hill (5-1), Maynard Jackson (4-1) and Mays stuck in sixth-place at 1-3. Elsewhere in the state, No. 2 Dutchtown rises four spots, crushing No. 9 Jones County 63-37 to knock the Greyhounds down four slots before losing to Wilson Academy at the Grayson New Year’s Classic 49-42, Joah Chappelle totaling 15 points and 13 rebounds. No. 3 Tucker shoots up five spots after winning at ML King 83-53. No. 8 Decatur plumets five positions due to a 44-41 loss to 5-9 Lithonia, the Bulldogs missing Kaleb Lanier. Out of the poll this week are GAC (13-2) and Bradwell Institute (14-1). The Spartans were blown out at home by Cambridge 72-50 while the Tigers lost 65-55 at newly ranked Class 3A No. 10 Liberty County.

There is serious shake up at the bottom of Class 4A. No. 4 North Oconee knocked Cherokee Bluff (11-5) out of the Top 10 after one week, beating the Bears 56-44 on the road in a chippy game which saw multiple technical fouls and ejections. No. 5 Baldwin secured a strong 65-47 win at Westside-Macon while No. 6 Madison County survived two close calls, winning at No. 10 Walnut Grove 56-55 and beating East Hall 73-70. The Warriors barely cling onto the final spot in the poll, also losing to Central Gwinnett at the Grayson New Year’s Classic 63-52, Marcus Smith II collecting 26 points, 7 rebounds and 4 assists in the defeat as Walnut Grove has struggled with Chase Roux playing limited minutes due to injury. No. 7 Seckinger got timely threes from Keith Banks and Braxton Miller in their come from behind 75-70 overtime win at Chestatee withstanding Colton Wilbanks’ 37 points. Central-Carrollton (13-2) exits the Top 10 with a 70-61 loss to Villa Rica after beating the Wildcats twice prior. There is a Region 3 invasion to round out the rankings. No. 8 New Hampstead breaks into the poll after winning at Southeast Bulloch 67-47. A grueling non-region schedule has prepared the Phoenix to contend for a region title, their best win coming in the season opener at Class 5A No. 9 Jones County back in November, 59-57. No. 9 Burke County also debuts, fresh off wins against Wayne County (70-65) and Screven County (67-50). Seniors 6-foot-5 Bryce Wimberly (14.8 ppg, 5.4 rpg, 1.5 bpg) and 6-foot-1 Kelly Williams (13.1 ppg, 2.4 rpg, 1.8 apg, 1.2 spg) power the Bears.

In Class 3A, No. 1 Sandy Creek whipped Westlake 93-63 as Amari Brown went for 23 points and James Madison-signee Micah Smith scored 21. No. 4 Hebron Christian netted a pair of Class A D-I Top 10 wins, beating No. 6 St. Francis 63-54 and No. 3 King’s Ridge 67-66 on a buzzer-beating three from MaTaj Glover who finished with 22 points. No. 7 Cross Creek slips a space with a 66-56 loss to South Florence, SC at the Battle of the Borders. No. 9 Long County falls a position with a 53-51 loss against Calvary Day. Richmond Academy (11-3) is out of the poll following road losses at Fox Creek, SC 65-55 at Battle of the Borders and at Morgan County 60-46. No. 10 Liberty County debuts after upsetting last week’s Class 5A No. 10 Bradwell Institute 65-55 to hand the Tigers their first loss and also beating Savannah Christian 55-35.

There are slight changes near the bottom of the poll in Class 2A, but near the top, No. 4 Westside-Augusta holds tight to their spot after losing 62-55 to Gray Collegiate, SC at Battle of the Borders. No. 5 ELCA survived a scare against Callaway 55-54. It was a banner week for No. 7 Union County in Region 8 as the Panthers move up a spot after protecting home court by beating Providence Christian 64-60 and Athens Academy 81-71, Houston Henry averaging 20.5 points and Jude Ellis 20 over the two-game span. Walker (10-6) drops from the Top 10, replaced by debutant No. 9 South Atlanta who beat the Wolverines 70-58. North Cobb Christian (11-4) exits with a 73-68 loss at Drew Charter. No. 10 Toombs County is back in the rankings after a 94-36 victory over Appling County.

Class A D-I saw No. 2 Darlington’s rally fall short against Fort Payne, AL 60-56. No. 3 King’s Ridge was beat at the buzzer by Class 3A No. 4 Hebron Christian 67-66. No. 6 St. Francis also lost to Hebron 63-54, dropping a spot. No. 9 Bleckley County secured a 63-60 win over Houston County behind Caleb Farrow’s 32 points. Bryan County (9-4) drops out following a 64-38 loss at Southeast Bulloch. No. 10 Athens Christian makes their first appearance in the Top 10 after defeating Lakeview Academy 65-54.

Class A D-II No. 1 Greenforest overwhelmed Mountain View 64-46 at the Grayson New Year’s Classic, Elijah Lewis netting 24 points. No. 3 Portal slips a spot after losing their first game of the season to Vidalia 72-58, but four-year All-State point guard Elijah Coleman was out of town for football. No. 4 Calhoun County went on the road and pounded Randolph-Clay 59-39. Wheeler County (7-2) is out after a 66-58 loss at newly ranked No. 10 Treutlen.
