Moving out of Thanksgiving tournaments and into Week 3, there still haven’t been any changes to the eight preseason number one ranked teams. As a whole, number one teams have compiled a 30-4 record. With that being said, the current front runners are far away from being locks for state titles. Hoops4Hunger gave us some terrific Top 10 showdowns that have really started to clarify who are the teams to beat.

Class 7A No. 1 Brookwood rolled through the field at the Dacula Thanksgiving Classic, beating Pope (67-35) and Loganville (61-32). No. 2 Archer blasted North Cobb Christian 66-36 and Douglas County 65-44. No. 3 Norcross got 27 points from Jania Akins to sink Grayson 61-34 at Hoops4Hunger while No. 5 Buford won the Jackson EMC Tournament, beating Class 5A No. 8 Calhoun 72-61 before overwhelming Class A D-I No. 6 Tallulah Falls 91-58 in the title game as Taylor Romano netted 29 points. No. 6 Peachtree Ridge went 2-0 at the Charlie Cooper Invitational, highlighted by a 55-42 win over Lowndes (1-2) who drops out of the poll. No. 7 Campbell inches up a spot after scoring wins over Collins Hill 61-51 at the Parkview Tip-Off Classic and going 2-0 at Hoops4Hunger, beating Grayson 57-42 and Class 5A No. 9 Union Grove 57-42. No. 8 McEachern was blown out by Alabama powers Hoover (60-32) and Vestavia Hills (54-27) but rebounded with a resounding 65-30 win over Class 4A No. 4 Stockbridge at H4H. No. 9 Hillgrove is up a slot after winning the Raider Classic, defeating Lambert 57-36 before knocking off last week’s Class 6A No. 4 North Forsyth in Coal Mountain 64-52, Yolanda Floyd winning tournament MVP with 19 points while Caylie Long collected a double-double with 16 points and 12 rebounds. No. 10 North Paulding cracks into the poll. The Wolfpack have a win over South Forsyth under their belt which buoys them and beat Woodstock 47-31.

No one has come close to touching Class 6A No. 1 River Ridge so far this year, setting up for a colossal showdown between the Knights and Class 7A No. 1 Brookwood this Friday in Woodstock. River Ridge is coming off a pair of wins at the Gladiator Showcase, dominating Class 7A No. 10 North Paulding 75-49 and North Cobb 79-40. The Knights are winning by an average of 31.8 points per game with three wins over Top 10 teams included. No. 2 Lovejoy won at Class 5A No. 9 Union Grove 54-40 while No. 3 Rockdale County defeated Union Grove 58-53. Lovejoy hosts Rockdale County this Tuesday. No. 4 Woodward Academy moves up a spot with a 76-58 win over Class 2A No. 2 Landmark Christian at Hoops4Hunger. George Washington-signee Sara Lewis dumped in 27 points. No. 5 North Forsyth sinks a spot after losing 64-52 to Class 7A No. 9 Hillgrove in the Raider Classic Championship. No. 7 Forest Park edged Class 3A No. 7 Carver-Columbus 63-61 at H4H, Yasmine Allen with 23 points. No. 8 Langston Hughes toppled Class 4A No. 5 Baldwin 50-43 at H4H, Kyla Greene scoring 14 points. No. 9 Brunswick got back on track with a 73-52 win over a shorthanded Class A D-I No. 5 Woodville-Tompkins. Rome (1-2) exits the poll. Rome wasn’t built in a day, but it crumbled and fell out of the Top 10 in a week after losing twice at the Raider Classic, beat 70-47 by No. 5 North Forsyth and 73-48 by Lambert. No. 10 South Effingham sneaks into the rankings after wins over Dougherty (50-37) and Class 4A No. 7 Chestatee (45-32) at the Joe Greene Classic. The Mustangs dominated the smaller War Eagles, winning the battle on the boards 55-36. Laney Dobbs and Shiasia House scored 13 points apiece while Kaymar Griffin collected 10 points, 16 rebounds, 6 assists and 1 block. 6-foot-2 Zakerria Hall was the X-Factor with 8 points, 16 rebounds and 3 blocks.

Even with a 62-47 loss to Hoover, AL, No. 1 Kell continues to build their resume as the team to beat in Class 5A, hammering Class 4A No. 2 Griffin 66-47 at Hoops4Hunger, Crystal Henderson torching the nets with 34 points and 6 threes. No. 3 Maynard Jackson jumps up a spot after a 2-0 showing at H4H. Taliah Cornish netted 7 threes en route to 30 points in the Jaguars’ 69-43 win over host Eagle’s Landing. No. 4 Bradwell Institute suffered a 46-40 loss to Lakewood, FL at the Insider Exposure Thanksgiving Classic. No. 9 Union Grove is down a spot, now sitting at 1-5. The Wolverines have hands down played the toughest schedule in the state, all five losses coming against ranked opponents. Union Grove went 0-3 this week, falling to Class 6A No. 3 Rockdale County (58-53), Class 6A No. 2 Lovejoy (54-40) and Class 7A No. 7 Campbell (57-42). No. 10 GAC has also played a challenging schedule, all of their in-state losses coming at the hands of Top 10 teams. The Spartans were beat 69-42 by Class A D-I No. 1 Galloway before falling 53-38 to Victory Christian Center, NC at Hoops4Hunger. Arabia Mountain (3-1) slips out of the rankings after a 64-58 loss to Class 4A No. 10 Walnut Grove. No. 8 Calhoun debuts after a strong showing at the Jackson EMC Tournament, losing 72-61 to Class 7A No. 5 Buford before bouncing back with a 67-34 win at Jefferson.

Class 4A is starting to open up as everyone in the Top 5 lost a game this week as did six out of the seven teams that were in action. No. 4 Stockbridge moves up a spot although it wasn’t a great week, beating Columbia 47-40 but pounded by Class 7A No. 8 McEachern 65-30 at H4H. No. 5 Baldwin is still searching for their first win of the season and have now lost all three games by seven points or less. The Bravettes went 0-2 at Hoops4Hunger, losing on a buzzer beater to Grayson 49-47 and defeated by Class 6A No. 8 Langston Hughes 50-43. 6-foot-3 Janaye Walker averaged a double-double in the event with 12.5 points and 14.5 rebounds per game. No. 7 Chestatee lost in the Joe Greene Classic to Class 6A No. 10 South Effingham 45-32. The War Eagles were sunk by a 17-0 run after Riley Black picked up her third foul in the second quarter. Black finished with 16 points and 16 rebounds while Caroline Bull netted 14 points as just three War Eagles scored and were outrebounded 55-36 by the bigger Mustangs. No. 9 North Hall rises a spot with a 55-43 win over Kamryn Grier-less Class 2A No. 6 Banks County, Emmanuel-signee Kristina Peach netting 23 points. Southwest DeKalb (0-1) is squeezed out of the poll after an idle week to make room for No. 10 Walnut Grove. The Warriors are now the fourth team from Region 8 in the rankings, filling up spots 7-10. Walnut Grove had a strong week, losing 54-43 to undefeated Rabun Gap before knocking off last week’s Class 5A No. 9 Arabia Mountain 64-58 and walloping Social Circle 55-35 on the road.

No. 7 Carver-Columbus hasn’t been able to put the pieces together with all their new faces. The Tigers won their first game over Harrison 62-53 but went 0-2 at Hoops4Hunger, beat by Class 6A No. 7 Forest Park 63-61 before falling in overtime to Class 2A No. 3 Josey 88-84. Class 2A No. 1 Mt. Paran rode Isabella Ramirez’s 15 points off 5 threes to a 48-40 win over No. 3 Josey at Hoops4Hunger. Josey quickly rebounded with an 88-84 overtime win against Class 3A No. 7 Carver-Columbus, Arieonna Booker scoring 22 points. No. 10 Thomson settles at the bottom of the poll after tough road losses to Greenbrier (52-51) and Class 3A No. 8 Cross Creek (51-38).

Class A D-I sees some significant shuffling below the Top 5, but No. 1 Galloway has held serve with wins over Class 5A No. 10 GAC 69-42 and Class 4A No. 1 Holy Innocents’ 59-49, Kennesaw State-signee Kailyn Fields scoring 15 points while Tianna Thompson and Jasmine Baxter chipped in 12 apiece to top the Golden Bears. No. 8 Lamar County debuts after a 70-55 win against Northgate while No. 9 Athens Christian surfaces following two wins at the Billy Wade Classic, beating Hart County 63-54 and Clarke Central 56-44, making the Eagles the fourth team out of Region 8 to be ranked, joining No. 3 Elbert County, No. 4 Rabun County and No. 6 Tallulah Falls.

No. 7 Mt. Zion-Carrollton squeezed out wins against Haralson County 41-40 and at LaGrange 33-26. Greenforest (0-2) is out of the poll, struggling to field enough players. After starting with just five players and having two go down to injury, Greenforest forfeited against Class 3A No. 3 Wesleyan in the second quarter down 34-6. They then didn’t play against Parkview or Woodland-Stockbridge. No. 10 Towns County is winless, but they replace the Eagles. The Indians lost 45-37 at Union County.
