The first week of 2023 wasn’t so kind to number one ranked teams as increased competition led to four of the eight top teams suffering losses. Only five teams across the state remain perfect. In Class 7A, No. 1 Brookwood had to survive in overtime at Grayson, 58-55 as Danielle Osho collected 18 points and 9 rebounds while UAB-signee Jade Weathersby scored 15 points and Ohio State-signee Diana Collins made plays when she had to, finishing with 14 points, 6 assists and 6 steals. No. 3 Norcross went 3-0 at Grow The Game in Chicago, topping St. Ignatius, IL in the finale, 67-66. No. 4 Buford faced their toughest tests of the season and passed with flying colors, moving back up a spot as they notched Coach Gene Durden’s 900th win. The Wolves pounded Class 3A No. 6 Carver-Columbus 82-62 and last week’s Class A D-I No. 1 St. Francis 80-60, Taylor Romano scoring 30 and 17 points, respectively. No. 7 McEachern split at the She Got Game Classic, beating Winter Haven, FL 37-35 before losing 33-30 to Bishop Kenny, FL. No. 10 Hillgrove clings onto their spot after losing 37-34 to Class A D-I No. 1 Galloway and edging GAC in overtime 50-48, both at She Got Game.

Class 6A No. 1 River Ridge nearly snapped nationally ranked Hazel Green, AL’s 78-game winning streak, faltering with a late lead and losing 50-48 at the She Got Game Classic. Penn-signee Mataya Gayle scored 19 points against the 14th ranked team in the country while Kayla Cleaveland netted 11 and freshman Makayla Roberson pitched in 10. No. 2 Woodward Academy suffered a 68-58 loss to Class A D-I No. 2 St. Francis 68-58 but maintains their position. No. 5 Forest Park scratched out a 36-35 win over Carrollton at She Got Game to regain some momentum after a poor showing at the Deep South Classic.  No. 6 Langston Hughes inches up a spot after losing 45-43 at Carrollton but bouncing back with a strong 54-47 victory against Class 4A No. 1 Griffin at She Got Game. No. 8 Veterans is starting to look like a serious contender, sneaking up in the poll. The War Hawks fell 66-64 at Class 5A No. 2 Warner Robins, freshmen 5-foot-10 Nariah Nelson (17 points, 8 rebounds, 3 assists, 3 steals, 1 block) and 6-foot-1 Gabby Minus (14 points, 7 rebounds, 3 assists, 2 steals, 1 block) having big games along with 6-foot-2 junior Rionna Byrd who posted 16 points, 8 rebounds, 4 assists and 2 blocks. The young group rebounded quickly, blowing out Tift County 74-54 and winning at Lowndes 50-47 behind Nelson (18) and Minus’ (16) 34 combined points. Sequoyah (9-7) quickly falls out of the Top 10 after a 56-48 loss at Rome. No. 10 North Forsyth resurfaces with a 67-45 win against Lanier and are 9-3 sans their two losses against Sequoyah.

There are no changes this week in the Class 5A poll. No. 1 Kell hangs tight to their top spot following a 67-59 loss to Palm Bay, FL at the She Got Game Classic. No. 2 Warner Robins survived a 17-4 fourth quarter run from Class 6A No. 8 Veterans to win 66-64, South Carolina State-signee Jada Morgan finishing with 23 points while Tasia Agee posted 16 points, 4 rebounds, 5 assists and 4 steals. No. 5 Hiram had a scare but prevailed 55-52 at Harrison as Hadiya Kennerly scored 18 points. No. 6 Jones County was also sluggish in a 39-33 victory against Dutchtown.

Class 4A remains extremely competitive, especially in the top six. No. 1 Griffin escaped their first meeting with No. 5 Baldwin 53-52 before losing 54-47 at the She Got Game Classic to Class 6A No. 6 Langston Hughes. Baldwin’s inability to win close games has been remarkable, six of their seven losses coming against ranked opponents with six of their total defeats coming by a combined 19 points. The Bravettes have played the toughest in-state schedule in Georgia and remain a serious title contender even with their record sitting at 7-7. No. 4 Luella earned a 66-57 win over Pebblebrook at the She Got Game Classic while No. 6 Stockbridge lost 77-47 to Winter Haven, FL. Walnut Grove (11-4) drops out following a surprise 53-41 loss at Madison County. Region 8 foe No. 10 North Hall is back in the rankings for the first time since a 3-0 start in Week 3, winning at Cherokee Bluff 47-42 before upending last week’s Class 3A No. 2 White County 61-54 behind Athena Vachtsevanos’ 17 points.

The top nine teams in Class 3A haven’t changed since Week 6, although the order has differed slightly from time to time. Things are starting to loosen up with some huge weeks in Region 7 looming. No. 4 White County slips two spots following a 61-54 loss at North Hall. No. 2 Wesleyan is up a spot with a 39-33 win against Arlington, TN at the She Got Game Classic. No. 7 Pickens has a crucial two-game stretch upcoming after losing 68-52 at Sonoraville. The Nettes are on the road at White County and Wesleyan and can either firmly cement themselves atop the standings or sink to fifth-place at 2-3 with a pair of defeats. Outside of Region 7, No. 6 Carver-Columbus lost 82-62 at Class 7A No. 4 Buford before falling 71-57 to Mainland, FL at She Got Game. Dawson County (9-6) couldn’t hold serve with the other Region 7 teams in the rankings, losing 45-33 at Chattanooga Christian, TN. No. 10 Mary Persons resurfaces with wins over Tattnall Square (54-26), Locust Grove (51-39) and Class A D-I No. 7 Lamar County (40-37).

Class 2A saw No. 1 Mt. Paran hold off a competitive KIPP Atlanta group 58-51, the Warriors seemingly close to breaking into the Top 10 now sitting at 13-2 with transfer Jaquoia Jones making KIPP a threat averaging 26.4 points per game. No. 2 Central-Macon clamped down Northeast-Macon 47-34 while No. 3 Josey blasted Laney 87-53 and handled No. 10 Butler with ease, 58-35. No. 4 Banks County beat Habersham Central 52-41 led by Addison Hoard (12), Carley Segars (11) and Kamryn Grier (10) combining for 33 points. No. 6 Landmark Christian lost 58-45 to Class A D-I No. 1 Galloway. No. 7 Fannin County fell 58-53 at home to Class A D-I No. 3 Elbert County. No. 8 Thomson crushed Laney 72-46.

We know who the top five teams are in Class A D-I, unchanged throughout the duration of the season, but we aren’t quite sure on six through ten as it has been a revolving door of teams beating each other. At the top, No. 1 Galloway usurps No. 2 St. Francis after two weeks in the two-hole. The Scots earned Top 10 wins over Class 2A No. 6 Landmark Christian 58-45 and Class 7A No. 10 Hillgrove 37-34. St. Francis defeated Class 6A No. 2 Woodward Academy 68-58 and Palm Bay, FL 60-56 at She Got Game, but were drubbed at Class 7A No. 4 Buford 80-60. No. 3 Elbert County got 21 points from Niya Moon and 19 from Aaniyah Allen in their 58-53 win at Class 2A No. 7 Fannin County. The roller coaster begins at number six as No. 9 Darlington drops three spots following a 43-38 loss at No. 8 Trion who is back in the poll for the first time since Week 4. No. 7 Lamar County holds tight following a 40-37 loss at Class 3A No. 10 Mary Persons. No. 6 Athens Christian shoots up four spots with a 59-57 win at Oglethorpe County (9-6), this week’s casualty after also losing 60-51 to Oconee County.  Bryan County (11-3) also exits with a 50-48 loss at Screven County. Debuting in the poll is No. 10 Pelham. The Hornets enter off a 66-45 win over Mitchell County and are powered by the three-headed monster of 5-foot-8 sophomore Sariyah Chester (15.7 ppg), 5-foot-10 Tashay Gay (13.2 ppg, 5.6 rpg) and 5-foot-6 junior Truth Wimberly (10.9 ppg, 4 rpg, 7.7 apg, 3.4 spg).

There is significant shakeup in Class A D-II but No. 1 Lake Oconee Academy keeps winning, scoring victories over Warren County (64-55) and Tallulah Falls (71-44). No. 2 Clinch County climbs a spot following a 60-40 win vs. Coffee but more importantly, No. 6 Taylor County sinking four places after beating Manchester 57-50 but losing 68-63 at No. 5 Schley County. Even with the key Region 6 win, the Wildcats don’t move up due to an earlier 51-48 loss at No. 8 Macon County and a narrow 66-63 double overtime victory against Manchester. No. 3 Turner County slides up one spot following a 91-50 rout of Treutlen while No. 4 Montgomery County leaps two places with a 49-48 victory at East Laurens and a 65-39 beating of Telfair County. No. 10 Towns County won at Warren County 47-42 behind Brelan Sieveking and Tabitha Barnes’ 14 points apiece.
