The end of the seven-classification era is nearly upon us, which means it will be even harder to win a state title next year but in the present day, there are still banners to be hung. This season is a little hazier than others as a plethora of top players across the state are committed as big time football prospects leaving uncertainty as to who will suit up on the hardwood for their final season and who will be early enrolling, leaving massive voids for their respective schools to fill. NIL deals are already here but more tangibly next year Class 7A will be no more, crunching the state back into six classifications with specifics on power ratings and public/private championships still to be ironed out. The 2022-23 season is officially upon us. The shakeup of reclassification has strengthened some classes while watering down others. For the first time since 2012 public schools and private schools are mixed together in the 1A classifications. It will be interesting to see how public schools fare this time around as from 2001-2012, the two split winning six titles apiece. Also new in 2022 is the long-awaited completed integration of the 35-second shot clock. Will it make a drastic difference? Will there be growing pains? We will find out soon enough. And lastly, don’t let anyone tell you there is a recession. With 175 reported transfers and more movement surely to take place even after the season starts, there must be plenty of affordable housing and a robust job market available in certain parts of the state. Classification realignment has come, meaning regions across the GHSA will look very different in most sections of the state. Maybe the biggest change is the reintegration of private schools with public schools, something I have plenty of thoughts about but would be better served expressing my opinions through a different medium such as the Spielin’ & Dealin’ Podcast. It was a record-breaking offseason for all the wrong reasons. The 189 discovered transfers this offseason are by far the most I’ve ever encountered over my seven years of coverage.
