Dawson County 52, Denmark 18

Dawson County (2-0) sank six threes – five in the first half – to bury Denmark (0-2) quickly. The Tigers led 35-9 at the half. Abby Slaton had a 3&D performance, netting a pair of corner threes and scoring off two steals. Morgan Chester got rolling in the second half scoring on backdowns with both hands and hitting from the mid-range. Kindra Coker set the tone with a robust stat line, defending at a high level and getting all her teammates involved. Coker’s sneaky ability to crash the offensive glass was part of how Dawson County outrebounded Denmark 39-11.  Rielyn Talley provided effort on the backboards and stretched out the defense with two three-pointers. Missing leading scorer Hannah Lopez, Denmark saw the debuts of Avery Huffman, Hannah Torralba and Maria Tirado pay dividends. The trio combined for 12 points, 5 rebounds and 6 steals.

Jefferson 47, Lanier 41

Just two weeks in, freshman Michel Robbins has already inserted herself into the MVP discussion. The Jefferson (2-0) star is the only player in the league currently averaging a double-double at 12.5 points and 10 rebounds per game. Robbins was huge against Lanier (0-2), racking up 16 points, 15 rebounds, 1 assist and 2 steals. She scored on two floaters, two putbacks, a drive, a three and three free throws. Robbins has a quick explosion to the basket and plays off two feet in traffic. Skyler Brady led Jefferson in assists while Sara-Grace Worley made her season debut and provided a hard-fought 7 points and 4 rebounds in the absence of Eve Knight and Delaney DeWitt. Jordan Johnson paced Lanier with her outside shooting. She hit three mid-range jumpers and drilled a three. Asja Howell found all her points in the paint and showcased her versatile skill set as she filled up the box score. Harmony Williams and freshman Michelle Ezumah made their first appearances of the season and anchored the backline of defense. The duo combined for seven blocked shots.

North Hall 35, Athens Academy 33 OT

A clutch three from Kendall Lawson propelled Athens Academy (1-1) into overtime but a baseline out of bounds three-pointer from Athena Vachtsevanos was all it took for North Hall (1-1) to outlast the Spartans. Vachtsevanos was dialed in from deep, sinking five threes to move into the league lead for three-pointers made (6) and points per game (15.0) two weeks into the season. Martha Vachtsevanos served as a sparkplug for the Trojans, flying around the floor picking up steals, snatching rebounds and finding her sister for open looks. Lauren Hemmer added 11 points, 6 rebounds and 2 steals. She is a steady player that can hit open shots and isn’t afraid to mix it up. She went 8-10 from the foul line. Josie Collins shined for Athens Academy, scoring 10 of her team-best 14 points in the first half. The high jump state champ is a very good athlete. She gets good lift on her jump shot and has upside as a versatile defender. Collins hit a pair of threes.

East Forsyth 37, Redline 35

In what was an electric atmosphere, East Forsyth (1-1) survived Redline (1-1) in a nip-and-tuck game. Nora Swafford was the steady hand that led the Broncos throughout, coming up big down the stretch with nine second half points. The little lefty was able to get dribble penetration, dump off assists and sank two threes. In a battle of talented young forwards, Hollyn Hicks contributed 5 points, 6 rebounds and 2 blocks against Carib Morris who drilled three threes en route to 16 points, 6 rebounds, 1 assist, 2 steals and 1 block. After a potential And-1 was wiped off the board, Calleigh Salvador started to do damage for Redline. The crafty slasher used her speed to get to the hoop, finishing with both hands. Salvador has swift footwork and a fluid eurostep downhill. With under a minute to play, Presley Downs emerged to save the Broncos. Downs, who scored all seven of her points in the second half, dug down on the post to get a steal and tossed ahead to Swafford for a tough spin and left-handed finish on the right side. With less than 10 seconds left, Downs drained the game-deciding three to put East Forsyth up for good.
