Showcase season is nearly over, with a few more events left on the calendar until focus switches to region play. The CTC Classic, Hawks-Naismith Holiday Classic, Queens of the Hardwood Classic and BCB Cherokee vs. Forsyth Challenge gave the state terrific Top 10 matchups across Georgia, leading to two new number ones. The focus in Class 7A is squarely on Forsyth County and Cherokee County after No. 9 Campbell tumbles eight spots after a fight forced five Spartans to be suspended following their 53-49 loss to North Paulding. Shorthanded, Campbell fell 47-42 at Marietta before regrouping with a 68-35 win over last week’s Class 5A No. 10 Hiram. Outside of the mayhem, it was a wild week in the classification as seven teams lost, many to each other – try to follow along. The BCB Cherokee vs. Forsyth Challenge saw No. 1 North Forsyth hold off Class 6A No. 2 River Ridge 63-58 behind Ali Jones’ 17 points and Flagler-signee Maddie Erickson’s 15. The Raiders ascend to the top spot in the rankings for the first time ever after also beating No. 8 West Forsyth 49-44 on the road, earlier in the week giving the Raiders now six wins vs. ranked opponents. West Forsyth moves up a spot to after also losing 59-51 at No. 7 South Forsyth, but bouncing back with a 55-48 win over No. 5 Woodstock at the Cherokee vs. Forsyth Challenge as Tennessee Tech-signee Cayla Cowart recorded 16 points and 12 rebounds while Calie Thrower netted 16 points and Molly Quincy returned to action with 14. Woodstock climbs three spots however thanks to a 63-59 win over No. 6 Cherokee earlier in the week, Central Michigan-signee Bridget Utberg scoring 25. Cherokee stays put in the middle of the rankings with a 58-53 win over South Forsyth at the Cherokee vs. Forsyth Challenge. Outside of the power struggle between two of the top counties in the state, No. 2 Grayson made its pitch for No. 1 with a 59-56 win at Class 6A No. 7 Rockdale County and a dominant 71-19 win over last week’s Class 4A No. 5 Troup County at the CTC Classic. Freshman Tatum Brown dropped in 18 points (4 threes) and 4 assists while Erin Rodgers tallied 13 points, 9 rebounds and 2 blocks in the romp of Troup. The Rams are up two places after No. 4 Brookwood slipped a spot, beating Sprayberry 59-57 but losing at Class A-Private No. 1 Holy Innocents’ 72-59 at the Hawks-Naismith Holiday Classic, the Golden Bears the lone team to defeat Grayson this season 73-70 to open the year. The hard-luck loser in the poll this week is Harrison (6-2), who pushed past Hiram 52-39 but fell 59-51 to Class 6A No. 3 Buford. The Hoyas are replaced by No. 10 Norcross, who quickly climbs back in after beating Class 6A No. 8 Langston Hughes 65-49. The Lady Blue’s only loss came against North Forsyth 59-40 10 days ago.
There were two losses among the Top 3 in Class 6A, but there are no changes to the order due in part the level of competition. No. 2 River Ridge won at No. 9 Sequoyah 68-53 and were on the verge of securing the No. 1 ranking, but couldn’t get past Class 7A No. 1 North Forsyth on the road at the BCB Cherokee vs. Forsyth Challenge, losing 63-58. No. 3 Buford also lost to one of the state’s elite, dropping 56-44 to Class A-Private No. 1 Holy Innocents’. The Wolves quickly got back on track with a 59-51 win over last week’s Class 7A No. 10 Harrison 59-51 behind Ava Grace Watson’s 28 points to keep Buford from losing ground in the poll. No. 5 Lovejoy pounded No. 8 Langston Hughes 77-41 as the Panthers drop two spots after also losing to Class 7A No. 10 Norcross 65-49. No. 6 Statesboro leap frogs two spots with a 3-0 weekend highlighted by a 38-35 win at the Winter Jam Classic over Class 2A No. 2 Josey. No. 7 Rockdale County lost 59-56 to Class 7A No. 2 Grayson but doesn’t slip at all. No. 10 Habersham County drilled 15 threes in their 70-40 blowout of last week’s Class 2A No. 10 Union County.
Defending state champion No. 1 Woodward Academy is back on top in Class 5A after notching an 82-78 win over Hoover, AL at the Queens of the Hardwood Classic. UGA-signee Sydney Bowles finished with 31 points and 12 rebounds while Sara Lewis dropped in 21 points. No. 3 Forest Park falls from their perch and are down two places following a 59-55 loss to Sparkman, AL at Queens of the Hardwood. If it matters, which it likely doesn’t, Sparkman lost to Hoover 73-48 in their first game of the season. No. 4 Union Grove rises a spot following a 3-0 week highlighted by a 57-44 win at Eagle’s Landing. No. 5 Griffin slides one position with a 63-58 loss to Class A-Private No. 4 Galloway at Queens of the Hardwood. Out of the Top 10 is Hiram (6-5) who suffered losses to last week’s Class 7A No. 10 Harrison 52-39 and last week’s 7A No. 1 Campbell 68-35 who was still missing players due to suspension. No. 9 Warner Robins resurfaces with a 46-42 revenge win over previously undefeated Houston County. No. 10 Cass drops a spot after struggling to beat 1-8 Heritage-Conyers, 44-39.
The Top 4 in Class 4A look rock solid, but beneath them it is unclear whether anyone has the juice to push for a state title. No. 1 Luella creamed Eagle’s Landing 76-38 while No. 2 Jefferson went to the Gold City Shootout and topped Class A-Private No. 8 Trinity Christian 61-39. No. 3 Baldwin rolled at Jones County 51-37 getting 14 points, 16 rebounds and 5 blocks from 6-foot-3 freshman Janaye Walker. No. 4 Carver-Columbus went 2-0 at the She Got Game Classic in Washington, DC topping North Point, MD 56-39 and Kennedy Catholic, NY 78-59, Caylee Simpson scoring 27 in the finale. No. 8 Bainbridge lost 44-37 to newly ranked Class 2A No. 10 Thomasville, dropping the Bearcats a spot. No. 9 North Oconee and No. 10 Chestatee both took losses, but remain put. The Lady Titans lost their rematch at rival Class 3A No. 9 Oconee County 53-44, while Chestatee fell at Flowery Branch 47-43 but rebounded with a 64-53 win over 7A Alpharetta (7-2). No. 7 Cedar Shoals marks the fourth team to crack the Top 10 out of Region 8. The semifinalist from a season ago beat East Hall 50-34 and played defending Class 3A State Champion No. 4 Cross Creek close in a 44-39 defeat. Out of the rankings is Troup County (2-5). The Tigers have played a difficult schedule and beat Class 2A No. 8 Heard County 45-44 on Friday, but likely lost star All-State wing Aniya Palmer for the season with a shoulder injury. She did not play the following night at the CTC Classic vs. Class 7A No. 2 Grayson. The Tigers struggled to score, trailing 44-5 at the half and losing 71-19 without their captain.
It was business as usual for Class 3A No. 1 Lumpkin County scoring wins over East Forsyth (79-35), Dawson County (53-36) and beating Murphy, NC 49-29 at the Gold City Shootout. 5-foot-10 junior Mary Mullinax has had a breakout season averaging 17.8 points, 8.9 rebounds, 4.5 assists, 4.3 steals and hitting 41% of her three-point shots. No. 2 GAC received 24 points from new 1,000-point scorer Jaci Bolden in their 58-43 win over No. 6 Redan. No. 4 Cross Creek defeated Laney (61-57) and Class 4A No. 7 Cedar Shoals (44-39) at the Winter Jam Classic. No. 5 Tattnall County got 25 points and 22 rebounds from Macey Ansell in their 54-31 win over Class A-Public No. 3 Claxton. No. 7 Lakeview-Fort Oglethorpe rises three places after steamrolling previously undefeated Ringgold 44-22. Beach (4-2) and North Hall (6-2) exit the Top 10. It’s strange not having a team from Chatham County in the poll, but there is work to be done to get back in. Beach eked out a 32-29 win at Savannah before losing in overtime 68-61 to 2-5 Butler at the Winter Jam Classic. North Hall was upended by Cherokee Bluff 61-59. No. 9 Oconee County debuts following a 3-0 week with wins over Athens Academy (31-28), Class 4A No. 9 North Oconee (53-44) and Mill Creek (40-35). No. 10 Murray County is back after a short hiatus, taking down LaFayette 60-44 and beating North Murray 41-25.
Can anyone stop Class 2A No. 1 Elbert County? The Blue Devils toppled larger opponents in Rabun Gap (53-38) and Grovetown (52-38) before racing out to a 15-0 lead at the CTC Classic against last week’s Class A-Private No. 7 Calvary Day and settling for a 58-46 win. Niya Moon cashed in 5 threes to finish with a game-high 19 points vs. Calvary Day while Aaniyah Allen was named Game MVP with 15 points, 9 rebounds, 8 assists, 4 steals and 1 block. No. 2 Josey continues to challenge themselves. The defending champs lost 38-35 at the Winter Jam Classic to Class 6A No. 6 Statesboro and aren’t punished for the narrow defeat. No. 3 Fannin County took down Union County (6-5) 67-45, dropping the Panthers from the poll after a 1-2 week also saw Union lose 70-40 at Class 6A No. 10 Habersham Central. Another Region 8 program is out of the rankings in Banks County (5-5), who suffered an 0-3 week while battling injuries. The Leopards lost 27-22 at East Hall and 35-33 at Commerce while star post Kamryn Grier nursed a back injury. She returned to action at the CTC Classic vs. North Gwinnett and dominated the interior with 14 points, 6 rebounds and 2 blocks before hurting her ankle in the third quarter and missing the rest of the game in a hard-fought 63-58 loss, sophomore Addison Hoard stepping up in her absence to record 20 points, 4 rebounds, 3 assists, 2 steals and 1 block. No. 8 Heard County tumbles three spots with losses to last week’s Class 4A No. 5 Troup County (45-44) and Central-Carrollton (33-24). Cracking the Top 10 are South Georgia schools No. 9 Dodge County and No. 10 Thomasville. Traditionally a strong program, Dodge County is off to a hot start. The Squaws saw freshman Glenna Rae Whitley score 14 points on 4 threes in their 45-36 win over West Laurens. Thomasville is coming off a 44-37 win against Class 4A No. 8 Bainbridge.
No. 1 Holy Innocents’ resume is the best in Georgia. The Class A-Private power’s latest victims were Class 6A No. 3 Buford (56-44) and Class 7A No. 4 Brookwood (72-59). No. 3 Mt. Paran defeated Marietta 61-49 while No. 4 Galloway earned wins over No. 8 Trinity Christian (41-34) and Class 5A No. 5 Griffin (63-58). Trinity Christian sandwiched their loss to the Scots with a 45-42 road win at Landmark Christian and a 61-39 loss to Class 4A No. 2 Jefferson at the Gold City Shootout. No. 5 Wesleyan caught fire at the CTC Classic, burning Johns Creek with 10 threes in a 70-39 win. The young Wolves backcourt saw sophomore Chit-Chat Wright explode for 7 threes en route to 31 points, 5 rebounds, 6 assists and 3 steals. Freshman Londyn Walker had 22 points, 9 rebounds, 3 assists and 2 steals while sophomore Eva Garabadian netted 13 points. No. 6 Hebron Christian fell to Marietta 59-58. No. 7 Deerfield-Windsor is up two spots with wins over Worth County (70-42) and Brooks County (87-28) while No. 9 Calvary Day falls two places with a 37-30 win at Stratford Academy but a 58-46 loss to Class 2A No. 1 Elbert County at the CTC Classic, Hannah Cail (19) and Mahkayla Premo (15) leading the Cavaliers in scoring.
Class A-Public is in flux some as four teams lost. No. 3 Claxton was beat 54-31 at Class 3A No. 5 Tattnall County but doesn’t drop thanks to an earlier 41-35 win at Bryan County. No. 6 Pelham is down two places with a 40-38 overtime loss to Thomas County Central. Central-Talbotton (1-2) is out after losing 45-34 to debutant No. 10 Schley County and 50-39 to No. 7 Taylor County who climbs three places. Aforementioned Schley’s only loss has come to Class A-Private No. 7 Deerfield-Windsor 54-18. No. 4 Lake Oconee Academy moves up two places with wins over Westminster Christian Academy (53-31) and Augusta Prep Day (61-26). No. 5 Screven County leaps three spots with a pair of wins while No. 8 Trion is down a position with a 60-37 loss to Darlington.
