A handful of Top 10 matchups opened up the 2023-24 GHSA season. While five classifications see no changes at all, others do have some slight movement. Transfers in the smaller classifications reform the top of the polls.
Class 7A favorite No. 1 Grayson routed Class A D-I No. 2 Galloway at the Double Trouble Invitational, leading by as many as 29 points in the third quarter before settling for a 74-59 victory. Florida Atlantic-signee Erin Rodgers made her long-awaited return after missing her junior season with an ACL tear and dumped in a team-high 16 points along with Tatum Brown. Georgia Tech-signee Danielle Carnegie netted 15 points ad Taj Hunter followed with 14. To no surprise, points were at a premium in No. 4 McEachern’s 37-35 win over No. 5 Norcross at the Double Trouble Invitational. Kalise Hill powered the Indians with 15 points. Over at the Forever 14 Showcase, No. 7 Hillgrove lost at home to Class 2A No. 1 Mt. Paran 52-41. Campbell (0-1) drops out after losing to Class 4A No. 1 Baldwin 64-36 at Hoops 4 Hunger. Into the poll is No. 8 Newton who blew past Class 3A No. 8 Cross Creek 62-39 at Hooping in Middle Georgia. Outside of game play, a last second transfer could tip the scales. Grovetown standout Miyah Holmes moved to Carrollton right before the season started. The 6-foot wing was a Preseason All-State selection and holds offers from the likes of New Orleans, Kennesaw State, Radford, Charlotte, South Alabama and Howard, all earned in July.
Class 6A stays the same. No. 3 Woodward Academy rallied past Class 3A No. 3 Carver-Columbus 73-72 after trailing nearly the whole game, down 35-29 at the half, 12 points in the third and 54-47 after three. Kameron Herring led the charge with 19 points followed by Delaney Cooper’s 12 points, 13 rebounds, 4 assists and 5 blocks. No. 6 Veterans won at Jones County at Hooping in Middle Georgia 44-33, Gabby Minus collecting 16 points and 10 rebounds.
Class 5A No. 2 Union Grove picked up a key win at Hooping in Middle Georgia, edging Class 4A No. 3 Hardaway 48-45 behind Jordan Brooks’ 13 points and Nadea Smith’s 12. No. 3 Midtown won at Chamblee 57-26 while No. 4 Cartersville won at Paulding County 67-49, Kaytlin Arnold with 19 points. No. 10 Calhoun sinks three spots. The Yellow Jackets fell to a shorthanded North Oconee at the North Georgia Showcase 45-43, unable to stop Aiyanna Peavy who scored all of the Titans’ first half points and finished with 26 on six threes. Calhoun received 13 points from Sa’Niah Dorsey and 11 from Allie Duke.
There is no movement in Class 4A. No. 1 Baldwin hammered Preseason Class 7A No. 8 Campbell 64-36 at Hoops 4 Hunger as Kassidy Neal posted 15 points and 7 rebounds. No. 3 Hardaway dropped to Class 5A No. 2 Union Grove at Hooping in Middle Georgia 48-45. No. 6 Trinity Christian rolled Jonesboro at the Battle on the Mountain 83-19. No. 10 Fayette County took down Brookwood 43-32 at Hoops 4 Hunger.
Class 3A holds firm. No. 1 Hebron Christian beat Parkview 85-26 while No. 2 Wesleyan held off Archer at the Blockbuster Classic 46-43 getting 12 points from Georgia Tech-signee Chit-Chat Wright and 11 from Texas-signee Bryanna Preston. No. 3 Carver-Columbus holds onto their spot after a tough 73-72 loss to Class 6A No. 3 Woodward Academy at Hoops 4 Hunger. No. 4 Dawson County thumped Forsyth Central 69-28 at the Roger Slaton Memorial Classic while No. 5 Pickens gunned down Rabun Gap at the North Georgia Showcase 54-47, netting nine threes and getting a team-high 22 points from Ellison Steinhauer. No. 7 Monroe defeated Lee County 42-24 and saw blue-chip freshman Kie’Aundria Acree post 13 points, 11 rebounds, 5 assists and 5 steals. Fellow freshman Taylor McKinzy led the way with 14 points and senior Ciarra Lunsford contributed 13 points, 12 rebounds and 7 steals inside. No. 8 Cross Creek lost 62-39 to Class 7A No. 8 Newton at Hooping in Middle Georgia.
In Class 2A, five teams were in action but the rankings remain untouched. No. 1 Mt. Paran won at Class 7A No. 7 Hillgrove 52-41 in the Forever 14 Showcase. No. 3 Banks County got 19 points from Reese Murphy in a 64-29 win at East Hall. No. 4 Thomson beat Warren County 62-34 while No. 5 Josey dismantled Grovetown 72-38, both games at the Evans Tip-Off Classic. No. 8 Columbia blew out Griffin at Hoops 4 Hunger, Nia Anderson hanging 30 points and 10 rebounds while Aalon Turner added 20 points and 5 rebounds.
No. 2 Galloway was drilled by Class 7A No. 1 Grayson 74-59 at the Double Trouble Invitational, but hold onto their place in Class A D-I. Georgia Tech-signee Tianna Thompson was a bright spot with 30 points. No. 4 Athens Christian defeated Woodland-Stockbridge 54-25 while No. 10 Bryan County topped Greene County at the Evans Tip-Off Classic as Kayley Wedlow netted 22 points.
Transfers have changed the entire landscape of Class A D-II. No. 1 SACA is the new team to beat in the classification after not evening fielding a team last season. Hoop Dreams Athletics AAU coach Dorian Williams is now head coach of the Warriors and brings with him seven transfers. SACA beat Northside-Columbus 52-43 in their first game. Following SACA into the poll from Region 7 is No. 2 Greenforest. Five transfers are in headlined by 6-foot-6 Central Florida-commit Arek Angui. If the Eagles get any competent guard play throughout the year, their size will overpower the competition. Telfair County (0-0) and Hawkinsville (0-0) are squeezed out of the poll.
