Region races are heating up while MLK weekend represents the last flurry of showcase events.
Class 7A No. 1 Grayson crushed No. 5 Archer 73-38 before losing to Perry, AZ 64-63 at the HoopHall Classic. After losing to the Rams, the Tigers bounced back with a 61-54 win over No. 6 Newton to seize early control of second-place in Region 4. No. 2 McEachern finished third at the Bass Pros Tournament of Champions beating Edmond North, OK 61-59 on an Ace Bailey game-winner, the Rutgers-signee finishing with 31 points and 16 rebounds. No. 3 Berkmar fell 51-37 to Bullis, MD at Hoops For Harmony. No. 9 Dacula slips a spot with a 60-48 loss at Mountain View. Carrollton (12-4) exits the poll after a week, falling 59-58 to Campbell. Debuting is No. 10 Camden County. The Wildcats won 57-49 at Valdosta and are 7-1 since Elyiss Williams made his debut coming off the gridiron, the UGA football-commit averaging 14 points, 10.4 rebounds and 1.9 blocks per game.
Class 6A is finally solidifying its contenders, but there is still movement. No. 1 Alexander blasted No. 6 Langston Hughes 85-53 and beat last week’s Class 5A No. 2 Dutchtown 61-49 at Playing For A Change. Langston Hughes also lost 77-76 in triple overtime to Class 5A No. 2 Tucker at Playing For A Change, dropping the Panthers two places. No. 3 St. Pius X rises two spots with wins over Marist (56-44) and South Cobb (81-69). No. 4 Riverwood also climbs two positions beating Marist (56-44) and South Cobb (68-46) as well before falling at Class 4A No. 1 Pace Academy at Playing For A Change 61-60, Vanderbilt-signee Karris Bilal pouring in 33 points. No. 5 Woodward Academy sinks two spots after a 67-60 loss at returnee No. 10 Jonesboro. No. 9 South Paulding has the longest winning streak in Class 6A, ripping off seven-straight heading into their rematch with Alexander on Tuesday. Lakeside-Evans (9-5) drops out after losing 65-63 at rival Evans.
In Class 5A, No. 4 Dutchtown falls two places with a 61-49 loss to Class 6A No. 1 Alexander at Playing For A Change. No. 2 Tucker moves up after outlasting last week’s Class 6A No. 4 Langston Hughes 77-76 in triple overtime at Playing For A Change, Josiah Lawson (38) and Khayri Dunn (21) combining for 59 points. No. 3 Tri-Cities has Region 5 in a stranglehold after beating No. 6 Maynard Jackson 78-61 behind freshman Tre Keith’s 27 points. No. 5 Chapel Hill was upended by Lithia Springs 54-52 but maintain their position in the pole thanks to their 69-67 win over Fayette County at Playing For a Change.
Class 4A is ever evolving below the Top 3. No. 1 Pace Academy edged Class 6A No. 4 Riverwood 61-60 at Playing For A Change. The long, slow slide of Walnut Grove (10-8) is finally complete, the Warriors dropping four-straight games losing to three ranked opponents this past week, beaten by No. 5 Seckinger 73-54, No. 4 North Oconee 64-39 and Class 3A No. 2 Cedar Grove 58-56 at the Georgia Interstate Hoops Classic. Seckinger is up two places, also routing No. 8 Madison County – who is down two slots – 71-50 behind Carter Watkins (18), Keith Banks (16) and Caleb Wells’ (14) balanced scoring attack. The Jaguars are 7-0 at home and have a chance to gain sole possession of first-place in Region 8 if they can win at North Oconee on Friday. No. 6 Baldwin suffered a 62-53 loss to Class A D-II No. 1 Greenforest at the Interstate Classic. No. 7 New Hampstead rises after winning a Top 10 showdown with Burke County (12-3) 81-66, forcing the Bears out of the rankings. Back into the poll are returnees No. 9 Central-Carrollton and No. 10 Benedictine. The Lions won at Sonoraville 49-44 while the Cadets have taken off since getting their football players back in basketball shape, winners of five-straight most recently defeating Beach 50-32. Scoring ace Caleb Jones is averaging 26.5 points per game to go along with his 5.2 rebounds, 2.7 assists and 1.5 steals. The Cadets host New Hampstead on Friday.
As of right now, it is clear that No. 1 Sandy Creek is still the team to beat in Class 3A, specifically Region 5 as the Patriots hammered No. 5 Douglass 66-43 to drop the Astros two spots before beating GIAA power St. Anne-Pacelli 73-66. No. 2 Cedar Grove survived last week’s Class 4A No. 10 Walnut Grove 58-56 at the Georgia Interstate Hoops Classic, Manny Green double-doubling with 15 points and 13 rebounds. No. 3 Hebron Christian finally breaks into the Top 3 with a 76-56 win at Hart County while No. 9 Monroe Area tumbles four spots with losses to Hart County 70-66 and Franklin County 62-55, digging themselves a hole in Region 8 starting the year 0-2. No. 4 Monroe is scorching hot with 11-straight wins, topping No. 8 Dougherty 59-48. The Golden Tornadoes visit debutant No. 7 Carver-Columbus on Friday, the Tigers finally bursting into the Top 10 after wins over Crisp County (71-51) and Thomasville (72-39). Tony Montgomery powers Carver-Columbus averaging 22.3 points, 4.5 rebounds, 2.3 assists and 2.8 steals per game. No. 6 Cross Creek won at returnee No. 10 Richmond Academy 54-51. Out of the poll are Long County (11-4) and Liberty County (8-4). The Blue Tide have lost three games in a row, beaten 60-57 in double overtime by Beach. Liberty County lost 36-33 to Johnson-Savannah to fall out.
The CSRA had a busy week in Class 2A as No. 1 Thomson survived Putnam County 87-85, DaQuan Young pumping in 32 points to overcome Landon Bonner’s 35. No. 3 Westside-Augusta swaps places with No. 4 Butler after getting revenge with a 54-43 win over the Bulldogs. Outside of East Georgia, No. 9 Toombs County won at Windsor Forest 63-46 while No. 10 Union County drops three places with an 80-79 overtime loss at East Jackson.
In a battle of Northwest Georgia private powerhouses, Class A D-I No. 2 Darlington rallied past last week’s Class A D-II No. 2 Christian Heritage 64-60 in overtime in front of a packed Van Es Arena. Trailing 13-3 to open, the Tigers clawed ahead to lead 32-28 at the half and 44-39 after three quarters before finding themselves down 54-49 with 2:23 left in regulation. After a personal 5-0 run from Grant Hutton put the Tigers to within two, D’Marion Floyd scored with 31 seconds left to force overtime. Floyd would come up big again in overtime, drilling a pull-up three with 27 seconds left to ice the game, finishing with 18 points and 5 assists. No. 4 Savannah won at Bryan County 67-51 before losing in overtime to Andrew Jackson, FL 66-59. No. 7 Paideia won at No. 8 Mt. Bethel 61-58 and lost to Greenbrier 56-52 at the Georgia Interstate Hoops Classic. No. 10 Bleckley County is down a spot after a 46-45 loss to newly ranked Class A D-II No. 10 Hawkinsville.
Class A D-II No. 1 Greenforest beat Class 4A No. 6 Baldwin 62-53 at the Georgia Interstate Hoops Classic and have now won seven-straight heading into a big week that starts with Class A D-I No. 1 Mt. Vernon and finishes at No. 3 Christian Heritage who is down a spot following a 64-60 overtime loss at Class A D-I No. 2 Darlington, Trevecca Nazarene-signee Jax Abernathy finishing with 24 points. With their full squad intact, No. 2 Portal atoned for their lone loss, beating Vidalia 64-55 leading by as many as 20 points. No. 6 Mitchell County won at Seminole County (10-4) 60-50, the Indians also losing to Bainbridge 65-47 to drop out of the rankings. Making their first appearance is No. 10 Hawkinsville fresh off road wins at Wheeler County 55-53 and Class A D-I No. 10 Bleckley County 46-45.
