Health from both injuries and sickness have impacted the state rankings. Heading into the wintery mix known as mid-January, region play is determining crucial seeding which will play a factor come state tournament time.No. 2 North Forsyth scored a key win in Class 7A, remaining unbeaten in the state of Georgia with a 62-46 win over No. 5 South Forsyth as Anna Gliatta scored 16 points. No. 3 Grayson went on the road and toppled Class A-Private No. 4 Hebron Christian 40-39. No. 4 Norcross held off Archer on the road 51-42. No. 6 West Forsyth beat last week’s Class A-Private No. 5 Wesleyan 62-54 behind Tennessee Tech-signee Cayla Cowart’s 22 points and 6 assists. No. 7 Woodstock lost 56-50 at Alpharetta but was without center Casey Miller who has been in and out of the lineup this season. No. 8 Campbell won at East Coweta (9-5) 69-59 to knock the Indians out of the Top 10. No. 10 Cherokee reenters the poll following wins over Roswell (70-49) and Alpharetta (68-45).
There’s major movement in Class 6A after No. 6 Carrollton drops four spots after suffering their first two losses of the season. The Trojans have battled injuries and haven’t been at full strength recently, losing 54-43 at Dalton and 49-44 to Class 4A No. 1 Luella at the J4 Sports MLK Holiday Invitational. No. 2 Lovejoy rises after a 68-44 win over Hewitt-Trussville, AL at J4 Sports. No. 3 Buford defeated Rabun Gap 62-56 and Winder-Barrow 63-36. Region 2 officially runs through No. 5 Brunswick after the Pirates destroyed Statesboro (14-2) 68-38 to drop the Blue Devils from the Top 10. Rockdale County (10-6) exits as well after losing to No. 9 Grovetown 51-49, the Warriors back in rankings for the first time since Week 3. Rockdale also lost 61-59 in overtime to last week’s Class 5A No. 5 Griffin at the J4 Sports MLK Holiday Invitational. No. 10 Sprayberry is back in the poll for the first time since Week 2 after securing a 65-51 win over McEachern at J4 Sports behind LSU-signee Flau’jae Johnson’s 33 points.
Class 5A No. 1 Woodward Academy edged Class A-Private No. 3 Mt. Paran 56-51 at J4 Sports as UGA-signee Sydney Bowles piled in 25 points, 4 rebounds, 4 assists and 4 steals. No. 3 Forest Park was pounded by Class A-Private No. 1 Holy Innocents’ 66-39 at J4 Sports. No. 4 Northside-Columbus climbs three spots with a 54-40 win over No. 7 Griffin. The Bears slide two spots but rebounded with a 61-59 overtime win against last week’s Class 6A No. 7 Rockdale County at J4 Sports. No. 6 Union Grove beat No. 10 Stockbridge 46-42 but were upset at Dutchtown 45-44. No. 8 Cass defeated Hiram 53-48 on the road.
The only movement in Class 4A is the swap of No. 6 Cedar Shoals and No. 7 Arabia Mountain. The Jaguars lost 39-34 at Flowery Branch but scored a 65-53 win over No. 10 Chestatee as Ashley Lester posted 23 points and 8 rebounds while Deshauna Foote tallied 20 points, 9 rebounds and 8 assists. Arabia Mountain lost 42-36 to No. 5 Marist. Atop the poll, No. 1 Luella beat last week’s Class 6A No. 2 Carrollton 49-44 at the J4 Sports MLK Holiday Invitational behind Trinity Layton’s 18 points and 10 rebounds. No. 2 Jefferson topped North Oconee 62-35. No. 3 Carver-Columbus netted wins over Troup County (73-58) and Hardaway (80-71). No 4 Baldwin pushed past Class 2A No. 5 Washington County 63-55, freshman Janaye Walker scoring 20 points. No. 9 Bainbridge holds tight after losing to Westover 39-31 but bouncing back with wins over Dougherty (51-37) and Seminole County (52-24).
Class 3A’s No. 1 Lumpkin County earned road wins at White County (56-29) and East Forsyth (54-46). No. 2 GAC slipped by Cedar Grove 49-48. No. 6 Pierce County slips two spots with a 45-41 loss to No. 9 Tattnall County, boosting the Warriors back into the poll after dropping out in Week 6. No. 4 Lakeview-Fort Oglethorpe rises after wins over LaFayette (84-47) and Murray County (56-50). Angel Simmons scored 25 points and Christen Collins netted 21 while Christina Collins collected 19 points and 11 rebounds in the win over LaFayette. No. 7 East Jackson holds onto their position after an upset loss at Hart County 68-65. No. 8 Oconee County rises two spots after Burke County (9-3) and North Hall (13-6) drop out. Burke County lost 42-39 at Thomson while the Trojans fell 65-63 at East Forsyth. No. 10 Sumter County is back the Top 10 for the first time since Week 7 following three narrow wins, part of a five-game winning streak that has put the Panthers at 9-0 in Region 2. Sumter County earned wins over Mary Persons (41-38), Central-Macon (35-32) and Crisp County (47-42).
It was another interesting week in Region 3-2A. No. 5 Washington County lost 63-55 at Class 4A No. 4 Baldwin but beat Lamar County (11-6) 52-49. Lamar County went 0-2 in their crucial week, also losing 60-47 at No. 7 Northeast-Macon who slips a spot with 43-35 loss at Central-Macon. Over in Region 8, No. 4 Rabun County held on against Union County 74-73, withstanding North Georgia-signee Ava Hunter’s 37 points. Emmanuel-signee Gracie Deetz posted 23 points and 7 rebounds followed by Sophie Woodard’s 16. No. 10 Callaway resurfaces in poll replacing Lamar County after beating Temple (61-25) and Haralson County (59-19).
In Class A-Private, No. 1 Holy Innocents’ beat Class 5A No. 3 Forest Park 66-39 at the J4 Sports MLK Holiday Classic. No. 2 St. Francis demolished Mt. Vernon Presbyterian 74-24 while No. 3 Mt. Paran suffered a 56-51 loss to Class 5A No. 1 Woodward Academy at J4 Sports. No. 4 Hebron Christian lost 40-39 to Class 7A No. 3 Grayson. No. 5 Galloway rises with a 52-46 win over Class 4A No. 5 Marist. No. 6 Wesleyan fell 62-56 at Class 7A No. 6 West Forsyth. No. 7 Trinity Christian beat Brookstone 61-43 while No. 8 Calvary Day posted a 4-0 week highlighted by a 52-45 revenge win over Hilton Head Christian Academy, SC. Tallulah Falls (7-3) drops out following a 59-44 loss to Athens Academy. No. 10 Darlington debuts with a 53-50 win at North Cobb Christian, JyJy Johnson hanging 23 points and 14 rebounds.
Class A-Public’s revolving door for No. 1 spins back around to No. 1 Montgomery County after No. 5 Screven County was beat 34-23 at No. 2 Bryan County, the Redskins climbing three spots. Montgomery County blew out Dublin (9-4) 50-26 on the road to drop the Irish from the Top 10. Returning to the poll is No. 10 Claxton. The Tigers have now won five-straight and have not lost since the return of leading scoring Aniya Smith (11 ppg, 5.9 rpg, 2.3 apg, 3.4 spg, 1.3 bpg). Claxton is 7-1 with Smith in the lineup and hold a 41-35 win at Bryan County prior to Smith’s string of absences.
