The final week of the 2019-20 GHSA season is upon us. With region tournaments right around the corner, the best of the best will soon rise and settle the state rankings before heading into what we like to call February Frenzy.

No. 1 Grayson has held onto the top spot in Class 7A since the preseason and avoided losing their grip as they rallied to beat No. 2 Shiloh 68-67 on the road. Mississippi State-signee Deivon Smith finished with 18 points, 5 rebounds and 5 assists while Winthrop-signee Toneari Lane added 17 points and 5 rebounds as the Rams came back from down eight points with 3:30 remaining. Shiloh holds onto the second spot after beating Class 5A No. 3 Eagle’s Landing 68-62 before losing to Grayson. 6-foot-6 junior Jordan Mitchell had 19 points and 13 rebounds against the Eagles and followed up with 23 points and 12 rebounds against Grayson. No. 4 Milton trades spots with No. 5 Wheeler after grinding out a 64-62 win over the Wildcats as Bruce Thornton went for 22 points, 5 rebounds and 7 assists. Evan Hurst added 19 points, 5 rebounds and 3 blocks. Out of the Top 10 is East Coweta (16-7). Offensive issues in the half court plagued the Indians again as they blew a 13-point halftime lead against Class 6A No. 6 Tri-Cities in a 77-73 loss. Replacing East Coweta is No. 10 Newton. The Rams reappear in the poll following wins over Rockdale County (64-58) and Class 4A No. 9 Eastside (71-64).

The number one ranking has been bad luck lately in Class 6A, but No. 1 Tucker retains their position even after a 69-66 loss to 24-0 LaFayette, AL.  Following the loss, the Tigers were taken to overtime for the second time by Morrow and barely escaped the Mustangs 69-68. No. 4 South Cobb handled Pebblebrook 69-55. No. 5 Langston Hughes stayed hot, erasing a 13-point halftime deficit to stun Class 7A No. 6 Archer 54-53, their only lead of the game coming on a Kennesaw State-signee Kasen Jennings And-1 with 0.8 seconds left. Campbell-signee PJ Carter got hot, pouring in 24 points to lead the comeback. No. 6 Tri-Cities has been stuck in neutral since Peyton Daniels’ suspension. With the lethal scorer back, the Bulldogs looked bad in the first half against East Coweta before rallying for a 77-73 win, but that second half momentum didn’t carry over as they lost 64-57 to Alexander to end the week, down double digits the majority of the game. At the bottom of the poll, No. 10 New Manchester falls a spot after a 63-60 loss to Hiram. No. 9 Valdosta edged Lee County 56-52 behind Allin Floyd’s 32 points, 4 rebounds and 3 assists.

Class 5A No. 2 Dutchtown held off Class A-Private No. 3 Trinity Christian 68-56 on MLK Day. No. 6 Cedar Shoals tumbles two spots after a 73-49 loss at No. 7 Buford, the Wolves climbing three positions. No. 4 Kell used an 18-0 start to hold off No. 10 Carrollton 96-86 in a defense optional game. Scoota Henderson finished with 25 points, 6 rebounds and 5 assists, but second-leading scorer Najhae Colon went down with a serious wrist injury and will miss some time. Carrollton was led by unsigned 6-foot-3 senior Marcellious Lockett, who ripped the Longhorns for 39 points, 5 rebounds and 7 assists. UNCW-signee Melvin Edwards pitched in 19 points, 11 rebounds and 4 blocks. No. 9 Warner Robins won their rematch with No. 8 Veterans 47-44, but lost to Harris County 56-54 to start the week, holding them back from moving up the poll.

No. 1 Sandy Creek overpowered No. 4 Chapel Hill 87-68 to stay atop of Class 4A. No. 2 Woodward Academy sent No. 10 North Clayton spiraling down five spots as they beat the Eagles 69-61 before North Clayton suffered a bad 64-56 loss to Luella. No. 9 Eastside is another Region 4 team that has lost its groove. The Eagles are down two spots following losses to McDonough (47-45) and Class 7A No. 10 Newton (71-64). No. 3 Americus-Sumter continues to fly under the radar with their exceptional play, beating Class 3A No. 7 Monroe 55-51 to highlight their week. No. 7 Baldwin rises two places after wins over Burke County (58-48) and Thomson (58-52).

Class 3A might not be as predetermined as expected as No. 1 Pace Academy showed signs of vulnerability in wins over Towers (76-73) and Westminster (46-38). No. 2 Hart County has a big week ahead as they hit the road to battle Jefferson on Tuesday and then Franklin County (17-7) on Saturday, the Lions being the only team to beat Hart this season. Franklin County, however, falls from the Top 10 after a 73-68 loss at Monroe Area. No. 9 GAC slips three spots following a 70-58 loss at Cherokee Bluff. Re-entering the Top 10 is No. 10 Central-Macon. The Chargers had a clean 3-0 week and have found their stride.

For the first time all season, Class 2A has a new number one. No. 1 Swainsboro blasted a CJ Parker-less No. 6 Jeff Davis 97-53 to avenge their prior loss and then hammered a solid Jefferson County team 69-50 on the road. No. 3 Therrell sinks two spots after losing to No. 2 Douglass 55-52. No. 5 Butler defeated Jefferson County 62-56. No. 7 Spencer hung triple-digits in their 117-75 win over Jordan while No. 8 Dublin outlasted Class A-Public No. 7 Wilkinson County, 62-58. No. 9 Laney beat Class 4A No. 6 Cross Creek 75-71 before holding off Jefferson County 45-38 and winning in overtime against Westside-Augusta 80-74. Washington County (14-6) departs from the poll following a 56-53 loss at Class A-Public No. 6 Hancock Central. Debuting is No. 10 Chattooga, winners of eight-straight. The Indians looks to avenge their lone Region 7 loss as they host a large Model team on Tuesday.

In Class A-Private, No. 1 St. Francis blasted Mt. Paran (12-9) out of the rankings with an 86-46 beating before pulling away from No. 4 Mt. Pisgah 74-59. The Patriots trade spots with No. 5 Wesleyan after the Wolves lost 53-46 at Class A-Public No. 4 Drew Charter. Earlier in the week the Wolves beat returnee No. 10 Galloway 39-37 and Mt. Vernon Presbyterians 61-50. No. 7 Walker’s free fall continued as the Wolverines were thumped by Mt. Pisgah 69-48, struggling without point guard Omar Cooper. No. 6 Pinecrest Academy creeps up a spot thanks to Caleb Bohn’s late-game heroics, hitting a game-winning three to survive Mt. Bethel 42-40. Christian Heritage (18-2) is out of the poll after a 63-59 loss at North Cobb Christian. Debuting finally is No. 9 Providence Christian. Off to their best start in school history at 22-1 following a 3-24 campaign a season ago, the additions of 6-foot-6 junior Elijah Williams (Monroe Area) and 6-foot-3 sophomore Chance Thacker (Lambert) have changed the Storm’s fortunes under first-year head coach Joey Thacker, father of Chance. A weak schedule has held the Storm out of the poll for the majority of the season but their continued consistency has paid off. In their most recent win over Tallulah Falls 67-44, Williams had 24 points, 8 rebounds and 4 assists while Thacker added 15 points, 4 rebounds and 4 assists.

No. 2 Wilcox County impressed again in Class A-Public, defeating No. 8 Lanier County 67-56. The Bulldogs turned around after the loss and beat No. 9 Turner County 64-61. No. 5 Terrell County suffered their first loss of the year, dropping them two spots. The Green Wave were beat by Colquitt County 63-58. No. 3 Calhoun County breezed by Georgia Military College 78-55. No. 4 Drew Charter lost 65-63 to Hephzibah at the MLK Dream Challenge but finished the week on a high note with a 53-46 win over Class A-Private No. 5 Wesleyan. No. 6 Hancock Central defeated last week’s Class 2A No. 9 Washington County 56-53 while No. 7 Wilkinson County lost 62-58 at Class 2A No. 8 Dublin.
