Movement is slight in Class 6A. No. 1 Grayson went on the road to drill South Gwinnett 84-56 but the Comets were an issue early in the week, knocking off No. 6 Newton 61-59 behind Adonis Brown’s 21 points. No. 2 Wheeler dominated at No. 5 Walton 67-44 to push the Raiders down a spot. No. 3 McEachern was upset at the buzzer at South Cobb on Senior Night 64-63 as Khalil Sylla drilled a deep three to snap the Indians’ nine-game winning streak. No. 9 Norcross escaped 4-19 Parkview with a 62-60 win as Jaron Saulsberry netted 17 points.
There is a new number one in Class 5A after No. 1 Tri-Cities defended homecourt against No. 2 Woodward Academy 74-69 to leapfrog two spots. Tre Keith erupted for 31 points, 8 rebounds and 8 assists while Georgia Southern-signee Sean Van Dorn added 20 points and 11 rebounds to top Clemson-signee Zac Foster’s 24-point, 8-rebound, 4-steal effort. No. 3 Milton had three tight wins, beating Lanier 60-53 on the road, Johns Creek 63-56 and edging Whitney Young, IL 45-38 at the Five-Star Longhorn Classic. No. 5 Habersham Central rallied past Loganville 67-61 in the Inferno. In a third-straight meeting that dates back to the region championship last year, No. 9 Lee County and No. 10 Houston County went down to the final buzzer, as Braden Moore drained a deep three with 47 seconds left to give the Trojans space in a 64-61 victory over the Bears. The two teams have been decided by six points over their past three matchups, the Trojans hitting a game-winner last year in the title game before seeing a late jumper waved off in their first meeting this season. Lee County also added a 63-50 win over Class 4A No. 6 Jonesboro at the Five-Star Longhorn Classic to move up in the poll.
No. 4 Southwest DeKalb is putting together a strong resume in Class 4A. The Panthers knocked off rival No. 7 Tucker 58-49 behind Messiah Mergan’s 12 points and 12 rebounds before winning at St. Pius X (16-6) 61-45, helping drop the Golden Lions from the Top 10 as they also fell 62-53 at rival Marist to open the week.
