The rankings are starting to settle in the higher classifications, but the lower are still working out the kinks heading into 2022. Number one ranked teams seem firmly cemented, but there is still a lot of ball left to be played with region play about to shake things up.No. 2 Grayson is on a warpath in Class 7A since their season-opening loss to Class A-Private No. 1 Holy Innocents’. The Rams drubbed No. 10 Cherokee at the War Lodge Invitational 66-46 as sophomore Erin Rodgers scored 24 points and freshman Tatum Brown netted 20. The Warriors tumble four spots following the loss. Also down is No. 5 Archer, slipping two places after losing to rival No. 4 Norcross 63-43, springing the Lady Blue up six slots. Jania Akins scored 24 points while DePaul-signee Zaria Hurston collected 14 points and 13 rebounds. No. 3 Brookwood rises after a 56-50 win at Class 3A No. 2 GAC, Diana Collins scoring 19 points and Nekaya Williams adding 18. No. 9 Woodstock has lost back-to-back games, dropping four spots. The Wolverines fell to Class 6A No. 8 Sequoyah 70-55 as 6-foot-2 junior Casey Miller missed her second consecutive game, zapping Woodstock of their top interior presence who averages 14.6 points and 14 rebounds per game.
In Class 6A, No. 5 Lovejoy picked up a 68-60 win over Class 5A No. 5 Griffin. No. 8 Sequoyah climbs a spot following their 70-55 win over last week’s Class 7A No. 5 Woodstock as Elle Blatchford poured in 24 points, 8 rebounds and 3 assists while Susanna Rogers tallied 14 points, 8 rebounds and 7 assists. Habersham Central (6-2) falls out with a 54-50 loss at Central Gwinnett. No. 10 Houston County debuts at 9-1 coming off wins over West Laurens (45-40) and Dougherty (67-44). The Bears’ only loss this season has come against Class 5A No. 7 Warner Robins who they have split with.
The decision to move No. 1 Woodward Academy back atop Class 5A last week seems to have been the right decision as the War Eagles thumped last week’s Class A-Private No. 4 Galloway at the War Eagle Classic 70-51 behind a Sydney Bowles (UGA) onslaught of 38 points, 9 rebounds and 6 assists. No. 2 Maynard Jackson topped New Manchester 66-50 while No. 3 Forest Park edged Stockbridge 62-54. No. 5 Griffin holds tight after losing 68-60 at Class 6A No. 5 Lovejoy. No. 6 Greenbrier topped Loganville 62-50 behind Brooklyn Begley’s 17 points off 5 threes and Trinity Barrow’s 15 points, 8 rebounds, 6 assists and 3 steals. No. 9 Northside-Columbus and No. 10 McIntosh both slide two spots after the Patriots lost 61-58 at Central, AL and the Chiefs couldn’t keep pace with Class 4A No. 1 Luella at the War Eagle Classic, 63-33. No. 8 Cass climbs a pair of places by winning the SMI Holiday Classic, opening with a 66-63 win over Pebblebrook and closing out Villa Rica 65-54 for the title.
Class 4A is in a state of flux underneath No. 1 Luella, who has dominated the competition, most recently scoring a 63-33 win at the War Eagle Classic over last week’s Class 5A No. 8 McIntosh. It was a crazy week in Region 8. No. 4 Jefferson is down two spots after losing 50-36 at No. 8 Cedar Shoals, Ashley Lester leading the Jaguars with 22 points in the upset. Cedar Shoals couldn’t capitalize however and actually drops a spot, passed up by No. 7 North Oconee who beat the Jaguars 62-48 as Berry-signee Callie Jackson scored 21 points and Aiyanna Peavy compiled 19 points, 6 rebounds and 4 assists. Elsewhere in Region 8, Chestatee (6-2) notched a 52-43 win over East Hall with Riley Black scoring a career-high 23 points, but fell to Union County 63-62 the following day to squeeze the War Eagles out of the poll. Also just barely slipping out is Bainbridge (7-2), who took a 46-43 loss to Colquitt County. Back into the rankings is No. 9 Pickens, winners of five-straight. The Nettes tallied wins over Heritage-Catoosa (31-23) and defeated Etowah at the War Lodge Invitational 59-33. No. 10 Thomas County Central cracks in for the first time after beating last week’s Class 2A No. 10 Thomasville 38-26 and Berrien 42-27.
Defending state champion No. 3 Cross Creek is on the rise in Class 3A, up a spot following a 42-36 overtime win at North Augusta, SC. No. 2 GAC suffered a 56-50 loss to Class 7A No. 3 Brookwood, but clings onto their spot. No. 4 Pierce County lost their first game of the season, defeated at Lowndes 62-48. The Bears bounced back with a 66-39 win at Berrien as Natalie Herrin became Pierce County’s all-time leading scorer with over 1,500 points. Region 1 rival Tattnall County (3-4) drops out of the Top 10 on a three-game skid. The Warriors lost at Swainsboro (48-44), at Glynn Academy (55-45) and to Bradwell Institute (55-49). Debuting in the rankings is No. 9 East Jackson. The Eagles are on a 10-game winning streak led by the high-octane duo of Antonia Pittman and Haven Rollins.
No. 2 Josey is still a threat to repeat as state champs in Class 2A. The Eagles tacked on a 48-45 win over Aiken, SC led by Jacksonville-signee Ky’Shonna Brown’s 15 points. No. 9 Lamar County tumbles three spots after their first on-court loss of the season, defeated by No. 7 Dodge County 55-46, Jada Baxter and Lyric Green scoring 13 apiece to lift the Squaws. No. 6 Callaway is up a spot after winning at Harris County 62-39 and dropping 59-48 to last week’s Class 5A No. 7 Northside-Columbus. Thomasville (6-3) slides out of the rankings after falling at newly ranked rival Class 4A No. 10 Thomas County Central 38-26. No. 10 Northeast-Macon breaks into the poll following an overpowering week which saw the Raiders clobber Southwest-Macon (67-3), Jasper County (82-16) and Central-Macon (87-38). 5-foot-6 senior Jakia Little is averaging 24.6 points, 7.8 rebounds, 1.2 assists and 5.2 steals.
There’s some movement in Class A-Private as No. 6 Galloway sinks two spots after a 70-51 loss at the War Eagle Classic to host Class 5A No. 1 Woodward Academy. No. 4 Wesleyan and No. 5 Hebron Christian both rise a spot, the Wolves winning Game 1 at the Beach Ball Classic 83-25 over Conway, SC and the Lions blowing out Shiloh 92-42. No. 9 Deerfield-Windsor is down two places with a 48-44 loss to Colquitt County. No. 8 Calvary Day rises after destroying Johnson-Savannah for a second time, 72-40 as Mahkayla Premo scored 26 points and Hannah Cail netted 17.
The rankings are unclear in Class A-Public but No. 1 Montgomery County is taking care of business, beating Hawkinsville (75-15) and Vidalia (67-48) this week. The Bell sisters have been unstoppable, 5-foot-8 sophomore Marley averaging 19 points, 12.1 rebounds, 2.7 assists, 6.9 steals and 1.3 blocks while 5-foot-4 senior MaKyla tacks on 18.3 points, 5.3 rebounds, 3.3 assists and 3.6 steals. No. 2 Screven County leaps three spots after bashing Claxton (3-4) 46-23. The Tigers tumble all the way out of the rankings with four-straight losses. Claxton also lost to Tattnall County (54-31), Long County (59-30) and Wayne County (38-33). Leading scorer Aniya Smith (11.2 ppg) has missed the last three games. No. 3 Taylor County climbs four spots after beating No. 10 Schley County 52-48. No. 4 Mt. Zion-Carrollton falls two places but has seen good competition. They lost 61-51 to Villa Rica at the SMI Holiday Classic. Entering the Top 10 is No. 9 Bryan County. The Redskins earned wins over Metter (60-36), Effingham County (45-41) and South Effingham (36-34). Zaniyah Shuman came up big with 16 points vs. the Mustangs.
