The Sandy’s Spiel Showcase lived up to the hype with a very telling field of games which have helped shape not only the state rankings for this week but the state title picture in multiple classifications.
There are changes in Class 6A. No. 1 Norcross regains the top spot with a 58-41 win over Class 4A No. 5 Kell at Hawks-Naismith. Missing Memphis-signee Jah’Naesia Spiers, the Lady Blue received 14 points from Tobi Owolabi, 13 points and 14 rebounds from Syracuse-signee Justus Fitzgerald and 12 points from in-season transfer Gabby Thomas. No. 2 North Paulding leapfrogs two spots after beating No. 6 Cherokee 65-59 and topping Class 3A No. 2 Fayette County 62-52 at the Sandy’s Spiel Showcase behind a 14-0 fourth quarter run. Delaware-signee Ava Andrews collected 13 points, 15 rebounds, 4 assists, 2 steals and 4 blocks. Cherokee loses just one spot in the poll after closing the week with a 58-40 win against Etowah (9-1), dropping the Eagles from the Top 10. No. 4 Carrollton slips three spots with a loss to Hoover, AL at the Sandy’s Spiel Showcase, 70-65 as the Trojans were without Columbus State-signee Madison Swint. Fellow Columbus State-signee Madison Reese led with 18 points while South Alabama-signee Miyah Holmes recorded 17 points and 7 rebounds. No. 5 Grayson destroyed last week’s Class 5A No. 7 New Manchester 82-32 at the Sandy’s Spiel Showcase, newly added Coco Rudolph with 24 points and 6 rebounds while Zoie Lofton chipped in 23 points and 6 rebounds and Jacksonville-signee Tatum Brown piled in 17 points, 4 rebounds, 4 assists and 5 steals. Campbell (6-1) departs from the rankings with a 46-38 loss at Harrison. No. 9 Newton breaks into the Top 10 after a 67-42 win against Class 3A No. 3 Jefferson at the Sandy’s Spiel Showcase. Even missing four players due to injury, the young Rams were relentless behind their sophomore class led by Mya Perry’s 21 points, 14 rebounds, 3 assists and 3 steals and London Smith’s 20 points and 7 rebounds. No. 10 Lowndes is back in the poll for the first time since Week 2 following a pair of wins at the Houston County Bear Brawl, highlighted by a 68-51 victory against Dutchtown.
Class 5A No. 1 River Ridge shot just 3-27 from beyond the arc against No. 5 Milton at the Sandy’s Spiel Showcase and had to hang on for a 62-52 win as the Eagles rallied from down 18 heading into the fourth quarter to cut the lead to seven points with under three minutes to play. Makayla Roberson scored 19 points, Finley Parker had 14 and Kyla Cantey 11. Georgia Southern-signee Kayla Cleveland came off the bench with 9 points, 15 rebounds, 2 assists, 3 steals and 2 blocks while Furman-signee Sophia Pearl tallied 9 points, 5 rebounds, 6 assists, 3 steals and 1 block. New Manchester (8-1) is out of the poll. The shorthanded Jaguars were without Clark Atlanta-signee Kyara Lawrence for their 82-32 loss at Class 6A No. 5 Grayson in the Sandy’s Spiel Showcase. Amorie Strachan was a bright spot with 13 points and 12 rebounds. Resurfacing in the Top 10 is No. 10 Pope who beat Sprayberry 38-33 and won at Sequoyah 55-49 as Abbey Bensman collected 17 points, 6 assists and 4 steals.
In Class 4A, No. 1 Creekside picked up a pair of wins at the She Got Game Classic, beating Gainesville, VA 60-46 and South Garner, NC 55-31. No. 2 Maynard Jackson beat No. 7 Midtown 63-57 to drop the Knights a spot. No. 3 Marist knocked Southwest DeKalb (6-5) out of the rankings with a 54-45 road win before surviving Class 5A No. 9 Creekview 50-46 at the Sandy’s Spiel Showcase. Kate Harpring was held to 17 points, 8 rebounds, 3 assists and 3 steals but Katie Elder stepped up with 16 points, 5 rebounds, 4 assists and 2 blocks to secure the win. No. 5 Kell lost at Class 6A No. 1 Norcross in the Hawks-Naismith Holiday Classic as Kennedy Deese finished with 19 points, 7 rebounds and 4 steals. Debuting in the poll is No. 10 Jones County. No. 2 Fayette County clawed their way back against Class 6A No. 2 North Paulding, tying the game at 44 in the fourth quarter before a decisive 14-0 run buried the Tigers in a 62-52 loss. New York-signee Megan Ohonde sparked the comeback, posting 17 points, 7 rebounds and 4 steals. No. 3 Jefferson fell to Class 6A No. 9 Newton 67-42, Michel Robbins a bright spot with 12 points, 9 rebounds, 2 assists and 1 block. Dawson County (7-4) drops out of the Top 10 after a 46-42 loss at Private No. 8 GAC. No. 10 Monroe (7-3) bounces right back in after a 57-27 win at Calhoun County.
There are changes in Class 2A as No. 1 Thomson usurps Region 4 rival No. 2 Josey for the top spot as now the top three teams in the classification are all from the same region. Thomson lost 46-45 at nationally ranked Private No. 1 Hebron Christian and already holds wins over Class 3A No. 1 Baldwin (64-54), 5A No. 6 Bradwell Institute (58-50), 3A No. 2 Fayette County (52-50) and 2A No. 7 Columbia (49-26), more than enough to stake their claim to the number one slot. No. 3 Butler moves up with a strong 47-41 win at North Augusta, SC. No. 4 Murray County won 54-48 at No. 6 Sonoraville and 72-61 at Coahulla Creek to rise a spot. No. 5 Hardaway slips three spots, winning at Harris County 55-39 but losing to Private No. 3 Holy Innocents’ at the Sandy’s Spiel Showcase 53-28, Rhianna Boynton finishing with 9 points, 11 rebounds, 2 steals and 1 block. No. 8 Carver-Columbus lost 72-51 at Harris County to slip in the rankings. No. 10 Union County lost Katelyn Brown for the season and didn’t have Hope Taylor available in their 56-48 loss to North Cobb Christian, but a prior 50-47 win at Coahulla Creek keeps the Panthers in the poll, Regan Trlica scoring 15 points. Laney (5-3) departs after road losses at Class A D-I No. 9 Putnam County 59-57 and Evans 67-43. No. 9 Ringgold makes their first appearance in the Top 10 coming off a 47-37 win at North Cobb Christian.
The carousel in Class A D-I spins another week with massive movement. No. 1 Model holds onto their spot, escaping Heard County with a 46-44 win before defeating Calhoun 46-39. No. 2 Central-Macon rises a spot with two Top 10 wins, knocking Dodge County (2-4) from the poll with a 58-44 victory and winning at No. 6 Washington County 34-30 who won at No. 10 Bleckley County 57-52 earlier in the week. Dodge County also lost 59-56 at Vidalia to fall out of the rankings. No. 4 Elbert County is red-hot, drilling Banks County 59-39 and Hart County 54-23. No. 5 Lamar County moves up two spaces with a split at Coaches vs. Cancer, beating TC Roberson, NC 58-51 before falling 53-51 to North Buncombe, NC. Rabun County (5-3) drops out after a surprising 53-42 loss at Oglethorpe County. No. 7 Bremen breaks into the Top 10 with a 57-49 win at No. 8 Temple who tumbles four spots. No. 9 Putnam County is back in the rankings after avenging an earlier loss to last week’s Class 2A No. 10 Laney 59-57 and beating Morgan County for the second time this season by two points, 45-43.
The headache known as Region 1-A D-II is in full effect as everyone is beating everyone, making ranking difficult. No. 4 Early County is up one spot after beating No. 6 Terrell County 36-28 but losing to No. 10 Randolph-Clay at home 36-32 who lost 44-42 earlier in the week at Pelham. Terrell County is down two spaces after opening their week with a 23-21 loss at Mitchell County who Randolph-Clay beat 57-45. No. 5 Seminole County rises a slot due to a 54-51 win at Pelham. Outside of the messy Region 1, No. 3 Bryan County suffered a 68-63 loss at Metter.
Class 3A-1A Private is getting interesting. No. 1 Hebron Christian barely beat Class 2A No. 1 Thomson at home 46-45 but regrouped with a 62-55 victory over Class 5A No. 2 Langston Hughes at the Hawks-Naismith Classic as Auburn-signee Ja’Kerra Butler collected 21 points and 17 rebounds while Miami-signee Danielle Osho posted 17 points and 10 rebounds. No. 2 St. Francis moves up with a 66-48 win against No. 4 Galloway who is also up a spot thanks to a 62-51 win over No. 5 Mt. Paran who falls three spots. No. 3 Holy Innocents’ secured a 53-28 win against Class 2A No. 5 Hardaway at the Sandy’s Spiel Showcase as Nakhai Worthy dumped in 16 points, 17 rebounds, 2 assists and 3 blocks. No. 8 GAC beat last week’s Class 3A No. 10 Dawson County 46-42 but lost at Chestatee 63-49. No. 9 Whitefield Academy outlasted Wesleyan 67-66 while No. 10 Athens Academy lost 45-43 at Hart County to slip two spots.
