The 2025 calendar year is finishing with a flurry as holiday tournaments are helping sort state rankings.
In Class 6A, No. 1 Wheeler suffered their first loss of the season at the City of Palms after beating Bishop McNamara, MD 78-74, losing 69-63 to Principia, MO. No. 4 Hillgrove swaps spaces with No. 5 Pebblebrook for a second consecutive week after beating the Falcons 72-57. Out of the Top 10 are Peachtree Ridge (6-4) and Osborne (6-3). The two are replaced by who beat them, No. 9 Brookwood topping Peachtree Ridge 66-40 on the road and scoring a 70-61 win over last week’s Private No. 6 Hebron Christian at the Deep South Classic while No. 10 Campbell won at Osborne 53-46 before surviving Sprayberry in double overtime 52-45.
Class 5A No. 2 Decatur pulled away from last week’s Class 3A-1A Private No. 1 Walker 85-72 at the Hoop Atlanta Holiday Classic as Jason Welborn II scored 26 points and Tulane-signee Tobias Brinkley collected 24 points and 16 rebounds. No. 3 Alexander saw the return of Colorado State-signee Pops Dunson to the lineup and recorded a 2-1 week, splitting at the Kreul Classic after beating East Paulding 73-44. No. 4 Woodward Academy won at No. 8 Tri-Cities 70-63 before losing to Wilson Academy 70-69 and beating Class 4A No. 6 Mays 69-63 at the War Eagle Classic as Bentley Lusakueno sat out all three games, the second time this season he has missed a stretch of games. No. 5 Milton went to the Hoopfest in Paradise at the Baha Mar Resort in the Bahamas and secured a pair of wins including knocking off nationally ranked No. 6 Bishop O’Connell, VA 75-66 behind five players who reached double figures paced by 17 points apiece from Solomon Bratton and Jackson Harrison to move up a pair of spots.
Class 4A No. 2 Jonesboro hangs onto their spot after splitting at the City of Jasper Christmas Classic, beating Hoover, AL 73-72 but losing at the buzzer to Oxford, AL 54-52. No. 3 St. Pius X continues to build their resume, outlasting Class 3A-1A Private No. 9 Calvary Day 81-71 in overtime at the Hoop Atlanta Holiday Classic, Clemson-signee Harris Reynolds dumping in 30 points. No. 6 Mays went 1-1 at the War Eagle Classic, beating Class A D-I No. 7 BEST Academy 71-56 before falling to host Class 5A No. 4 Woodward Academy 69-63. No. 9 Tucker defeated Marist 59-52 while No. 10 Locust Grove won at ELCA 52-51.
A familiar face takes over the top spot for the first time this season in Class 3A as defending three-time state champion No. 1 Sandy Creek earned a pair of wins at the War Eagle Classic including beating Class A D-I No. 7 BEST Academy 81-49, Braylon Robinson leading five Patriots in double digits with 15 points. No. 2 Baldwin slips a spot after two losses at RepsOnReps Battlegrounds at Jacksonville University. No. 8 Westover secured a big win, beating Class 2A No. 4 Carver-Columbus 62-52 at the U-Save-It Classic. Calhoun (4-1) drops out after an inexplicable 58-56 loss to 1-9 Rockmart at the Rome Seven Hills Rotary Christmas Tournament. No. 9 Monroe debuts after a pair of wins at the U-Save-It Classic.
Class 2A No. 4 Carver-Columbus finally started their season after winning another state title in football, winning their first three games but dropping to Class 3A No. 8 Westover at the U-Save-It Classic 62-52. No. 6 Lakeview Fort-Oglethorpe went 2-1 at KSA Orlando, their lone loss coming to 11-0 Aurora Christian, IL. No. 7 Kendrick escaped Northside-Columbus 66-64. Burke County (2-3) is out of the rankings with a 65-63 loss to Windsor Forest and an outstanding result against Liberty County. No. 10 Morgan County reemerges after a 62-45 win against Starr’s Mill at the Hoop Atlanta Holiday Classic, freshman Trey Carter netting 16 points.
There isn’t a ton of movement in Class A D-I. No. 3 Southwest-Macon won 54-52 at No. 10 Dodge County before losing 72-61 to Houston County. Dodge County barely holds onto their spot after also losing 64-42 to Fitzgerald at the Wilcox County Holiday Classic. No. 5 Commerce is up a spot after wins over Banks County 71-57 and at Providence Christian 57-46. No. 6 Vidalia slides a spot with a 51-43 loss at Savannah Christian. No. 7 BEST Academy hangs tight with two losses at the War Eagle Classic, beat by Class 4A No. 6 Mays 71-56 and Class 3A No. 1 Sandy Creek 81-49. No. 8 Model ran out of firepower in the Rome Seven Hills Rotary Christmas Tournament Championship, losing to rival Private No. 6 Darlington 83-69.
There is no rhyme or rhythm to Class A D-II, the most open the classification has felt in years. No. 1 Chattahoochee County feels like the safest bet right now however as the Panthers tore into Macon County (5-3) 73-37 on the road to knock the Bulldogs out of the poll. No. 2 Turner County beat Macon County as well, 69-49 before losing in overtime to Crisp County 67-60. No. 5 Bowdon is down two spots after suffering three losses, beat by Bremen 63-57 then at the SMI Carroll County Christmas Classic by Cartersville 72-58 and River Ridge 77-64. Manchester (3-3) departs from the rankings as the Preseason No. 1 did not see their top players return from the gridiron to play their senior seasons. The Blue Devils went 0-3 this week, losing 69-63 in overtime at No. 7 Greene County who reappears in the rankings. The Tigers also defeated No. 8 Warren County 68-63 but ended the week with a 77-75 overtime loss to debutant No. 6 Taylor County. No. 9 Hancock Central falls two spots after losing at No. 8 Warren County 51-43.
A new number one takes over Class 3A-1A Private as No. 1 Mt. Vernon claims the top spot after No. 2 Walker lost 85-72 to Class 5A No. 2 Decatur at the Hoop Atlanta Holiday Classic. No. 4 Greenforest suffered two losses at the City of Jasper Christmas Classic. No. 6 Darlington climbs two spots after capturing the Gold Ball at the Rome Seven Hills Rotary Christmas Tournament, beating Class A D-I No. 8 Model in the championship 83-69 as tournament MVP Cam Selig recorded 18 points and 14 rebounds. No. 7 Hebron Christian endured a 71-60 loss at Class 6A No. 9 Brookwood in the Deep South Classic Semifinals as Devon McField and TJ Matthews were unavailable. Freshman Zaiden Nelson poured in 24 points in the loss. No. 9 Calvary Day and No. 10 Lovett swap spots, the Cavaliers falling 81-71 to Class 4A No. 3 St. Pius X in overtime at the Hoop Atlanta Holiday classic while the Lions fell in the same event to Midtown 53-52.
