No. 8 Newton 54, Lanier 30: Lanier received 10 points, 4 rebounds and 3 steals from Asja Howell.

No. 9 Cherokee 84, Centennial 38: Wofford-signee Toni Warren, USC Aiken-signee Riley Simmons and Lyla Griffith all scored 18 points. Klaire Henkle chipped in 12 points.

Week 1 of the GHSA season is in the books, gifting us a handful of Top 10 showdowns across multiple classifications and already affording us a new number one team in Class 7A. Georgia’s Elite 8 Tip-Off Classic, SWD Showdown IX, Hoops 4 Hunger, Double Trouble Invitational and North Georgia Showcase highlighted the opening weekend. One take away from the first two days of the season is this: You better practice your free throws. With the elimination of the one-and-one bonus and the implementation of an automatic two free throws on the fifth team foul, games have quickly turned into free throw shooting contests and have lengthened the duration of each game by slowing the pace.
