MLK Day tournaments and region play have started to reshape classifications.Class 7A looks much different as major changes are afoot. No. 5 Norcross tumbles four spots after a 69-57 loss to No. 2 Pebblebrook at the Nike Elite Showcase. The Falcons, who climb four spots, got 16 points from Jase McCullough and 12 from Cameron Smith off the bench as the tandem combined for seven three-pointers. Earlier in the week Pebblebrook won at No. 10 Carrollton 57-47, the Trojans back in the poll this week after opening with a 62-49 win against Class 5A No. 5 Mays at the J4 Sports MLK Classic. No. 1 Wheeler ascends back to the top spot with blowout wins over Walton (67-49) and Kennesaw Mountain (75-40) after No. 4 Grayson slipped two spots with a 66-53 loss to John Marshall, VA, but wins over Parkview (70-60) and South Gwinnett (55-51). No. 3 McEachern rises with a 96-64 demolition of Class A D-I No. 5 King’s Ridge at the MLK Peach Ball Classic and closing their week with an 85-80 victory over Oak Ridge, FL at the Nike Elite Showcase as a now healthy Jamichael Davis, a Rutgers-commit, poured in 23 points, 11 rebounds, 7 assists and 1 steal while Moses Hipps netted 20 points and Jalen Hilliard added 15 points and 7 rebounds as Ace Bailey struggled with foul trouble. No. 6 Archer climbs with a 50-48 win over Buckhorn, AL at the MLK National Showcase while No. 7 Milton won at Class 4A No. 2 Pace Academy 49-44 in the Nike Elite Showcase as Josh Dixon collected 20 points, 5 rebounds and 5 assists. No. 8 Newton sinks three spots following a 71-69 loss at Parkview. No. 9 Cherokee survived their first week in the Top 10, flexing their muscle with a 70-65 win over Osborne as Cameron Pope (18), Tayden Owens (17) and Lawrence Sanford (16) combined for 51 points. Buford (14-5) exits with a 55-51 road loss against Collins Hill.
In Class 6A, No. 1 Alexander lost to Hoover, AL 78-57 in the MLK National Showcase but survived 62-60 against No. 10 South Paulding after a pair of missed free throws with three seconds left. The Spartans are back in the poll after winning at Douglas County 74-65. No. 2 Jonesboro edged Woodward Academy (16-4) for the second time in two weeks 58-55, dropping the War Eagles from the rankings. No. 6 Marist hammered Blessed Trinity (16-5) 60-38, forcing the Titans out of the Top 10. No. 8 Lee County squeezed out a 52-50 win at Class 3A No. 10 Dougherty. Back into the poll is No. 9 Langston Hughes who put together a perfect 4-0 week highlighted by a 74-73 win against Class 5A No. 6 Tri-Cities at the MLK Dream Challenge. The Panthers travel to South Paulding on Tuesday for a rematch of their prior 59-57 overtime victory.
Class 5A No. 1 Eagle’s Landing cut down Class A D-II No. 1 Greenforest 52-47 at the MLK Dream Challenge. No. 4 Dutchtown moves up a spot with a 72-61 victory against Lambert at the MLK Peach Ball Classic. No. 5 Mays loses a space following a 62-49 loss to Class 7A No. 10 Carrollton at the J4 Sports MLK Classic. No. 6 Tri-Cities rebounded from a 74-73 loss to Class 6A No. 9 Langston Hughes at the MLK Dream Challenge to score three wins highlighted by a 71-59 decision over No. 7 Chapel Hill jumping the Bulldogs two places in the poll. No. 9 Jones County slips three places after losing 77-64 to North Augusta, SC at the Battle of the Border MLK Classic and falling 65-57 at Union Grove. No. 10 Lithonia hangs tight after a 67-66 loss at Decatur thanks in part to their 51-49 win at Class A D-I No. 4 Social Circle to start the week.
No. 1 McDonough proved the limited naysayers wrong in Class 4A, topping No. 2 Pace Academy 71-60 behind Keenan Gray’s 26 points. The War Hawks also knocked off Class 3A No. 1 Sandy Creek 68-61 at the MLK Dream Challenge. The Knights ended their week with a 49-44 loss to Class 7A No. 7 Milton at home in the Nike Elite Showcase, Chandler Bing with 15 points in the defeat. No. 3 Southwest DeKalb grinded out a 39-37 win at Holy Innocents’ before beating Druid Hills 41-33 and knocking Miller Grove (10-8) out of the Top 10 with a 55-43 win. It took overtime for No. 4 Bainbridge to survive at Cairo 53-49. No. 6 North Oconee is up a spot heading into their showdown with No. 5 Madison County who they beat 39-38 on the road earlier this season after a 2-1 week saw the Titans win at Chestatee 62-41 before losing at returnee No. 9 Seckinger 50-45 who avenged an earlier 73-35 loss on the road. No. 10 Fayette County plummets four spots after losing 71-68 to South Cobb at the J4 Sports MLK Classic and to Class 3A No. 1 Sandy Creek 82-61.
In Class 3A, No. 1 Sandy Creek lost 68-61 to Class 4A No. 1 McDonough at the MLK Dream Challenge before thumping last week’s Class 4A No. 6 Fayette County 82-61 on the road. No. 2 Beach continues to win close games, their latest a 63-56 overtime win at No. 6 Calvary Day, Shamarrie Hugie netting 25 points. No. 4 Monroe Area moves up after losing 66-47 to Rabun Gap at the North Oconee MLK Classic but beating Hebron Christian 59-52, Stephens County (9-8) 71-51 and Morgan County 71-51, Vonte Newell averaging 20.3 points per game in the wins. The Indians quickly depart from the poll after also losing to Hart County 67-62. No. 5 Cedar Grove had a sluggish week, costing them a spot in the rankings as they beat Heritage School 55-49 at the MLK Dream Challenge, escaped Douglass 77-76 but lost at Douglas County 77-72. No. 8 Monroe beat Valdosta 57-51 while Jadon Yeh dumped 41 points on Lumpkin County in No. 9 White County’s 76-45 triumph. Back in the poll for the first time since Week 2 is No. 10 Dougherty. Don’t let the record fool you, the Trojans’ strength of schedule is as good as anyone’s in the classification. Dougherty is 4-8 vs. teams that have been ranked this season and have no terrible losses. This past week the Trojans fell 52-50 to Class 6A No. 8 Lee County before blasting Thomasville 69-48.
There’s movement in Class 2A as No. 7 Providence Christian drops four spots following an 81-78 loss at Union County, Houston Henry sinking halfcourt three at the buzzer to give the Panthers’ their biggest upset win in over three decades. No. 4 North Cobb Christian has run their win-streak up to 14 after beating Woodland-Stockbridge (69-44), Walker (62-50) and BEST Academy (81-48). No. 8 Windsor Forest once again broke Tattnall County’s heart, this time 87-85 in overtime at Battle Creek. No. 9 Thomson is down two more spots with a 54-53 loss at Butler.
It’s time to start trimming the fat in Class A D-I. It’s gotten increasingly difficult to fill out the poll, but the Top 10 feels as firm as it’s been in a while now. No. 1 Mt. Vernon won at Washington 64-59 while No. 2 Mt. Bethel beat South Gwinnett 63-56 at the MLK Peach Ball Classic before outlasting St. Francis 62-60. No. 4 Social Circle is back, up four spots as their grueling non-region schedule has just two games remaining. The Redskins are battle-tested heading down the home stretch. This past week they beat Union Grove 55-49 at the North Oconee MLK Classic, lost 51-49 to Class 5A No. 10 Lithonia, fell at undefeated Class A D-II No. 2 Christian Heritage 75-67 and held off 16-4 Eastside 51-42. Lamarius Jackson poured in 35 points on seven three-pointers against Christian Heritage before twin Quindarius Jackson recorded 19 points and 17 rebounds against Eastside. No. 5 King’s Ridge drops out of the Top 4 for the first time all season after getting hammered by Class 7A No. 3 McEachern 96-64 at the MLK Peach Ball Classic. No. 6 Woodville-Tompkins is here to stay in the Top 10, their last appearance in Week 7. The Wolverines tore apart No. 8 Savannah for the second time this season, 71-48. No. 7 Darlington falls two spots after leading for three quarters before getting outscored 23-7 in the fourth by Paulding County in a 63-48 loss, D’Maron Floyd a bright spot with 16 points. No. 10 Paideia went 1-3, losing to McIntosh (60-59), East Coweta (66-61) and Westlake (70-41) with a 73-49 win at Whitefield Academy in between. The Pythons have played a brutal schedule and have already shown their ability to knock off upper echelon teams in the classification, making it hard to sink them out of the Top 10 completely no matter how lopsided their record may get.
Class A D-II No. 1 Greenforest lost 52-47 to Class 5A No. 1 Eagle’s Landing at the MLK Dream Challenge. No. 2 Christian Heritage remained perfect, beating Tyner Academy, TN 62-55 before going 15-31 from beyond the arc to knock off Class A D-I No. 4 Social Circle 75-67 as Jax Abernathy collected 32 points, 5 rebounds, 3 assists and 7 steals. No. 3 Portal left no doubt against their closest competition in Region 3, drubbing Jenkins County 73-50 behind Joseph Thomas (20), Amir Jackson (17) and Elijah Coleman (17)’s combined 54 points. No. 5 Charlton County scored a nice 77-69 win over Clinch County powered by Elyiss Williams’ 22 points, 9 rebounds and 9 blocks. No. 8 Macon County moves up with a 97-78 beat down of No. 9 Manchester, atoning for an earlier 82-68 loss. Telfair County (14-3) is a casualty after being upset at Hawkinsville 69-51. No. 10 Chattahoochee County resurfaces with key wins against Greenville (67-56) and Taylor County (55-42).
