Over the busy MLK Day week, top-ranked teams were tested while region rematches have made things interesting with three weeks remaining in regular season play. There are major changes in Class 7A. The long-awaited 1 vs. 2 match-up ended in a fizzle as No. 1 Brookwood steamrolled No. 3 Archer in the second half for a 70-49 knockout. Ohio State-signee Diana Collins tallied 26 points, 9 rebounds, 6 assists and 2 blocks. The Broncos started their week with another impressive victory, crushing Class 6A No. 8 Veterans 77-43 at the HIES MLK Classic as four players scored in double figures led by Collins’ 18. No. 2 Buford rises two spots after a 61-54 win at Collins Hill led by Ava Grace Watson’s 23 points. No. 6 Norcross plummets three spots in an ugly 34-33 loss to No. 5 McEachern, who jumps five places, at the Nike Elite Showcase. Kalise Hill led the Indians with 23 points while Jania Akins scored 13 for Norcross who trailed nearly the entire game. McEachern also knocked off No. 8 North Paulding 47-40 on the road earlier in the week to sink the Wolfpack two slots.

A monster upset was brewing in Hickory Flat as Class 6A No. 1 River Ridge trailed 39-22 in the third quarter at Sequoyah, but turned to the press and ripped off a 30-2 run to eventually claim a 69-61 win, Kayla Cleaveland back in action with 20 points. No. 2 Forest Park holds tight to their position after winning at No. 6 Rockdale County 54-41 but losing to No. 4 Lovejoy 64-47. Rockdale is down two spots after also losing to No. 3 Woodward Academy at home 61-52 as Kameron Herring posted 19 points and 10 rebounds to lead the War Eagles. No. 5 Langston Hughes breaks into the Top 5 after going on the road and smashing New Manchester (14-3) 55-28 to complete the season sweep and send the Jaguars tumbling out of the Top 10. No. 8 Veterans doesn’t move after losing 77-43 to Class 7A No. 1 Brookwood at the HIES MLK Classic but closing the week with a 60-59 victory over last week’s Class 5A No. 2 Warner Robins to split the season series as Desteyn Seaton scored 12 points. Hopping back into the poll is No. 10 North Forsyth who rolled GAC 79-55 at State Farm Arena.

Class 5A is evolving each week with significant movement. No. 2 Union Grove has hit their stride and will likely win out heading into the state playoffs. The Wolverines have reeled off 12-straight wins and passed their final hurdles this week, winning at No. 3 Warner Robins 60-50 and holding off No. 6 Jones County 50-43. Warner Robins also suffered a 60-59 loss at Class 6A No. 8 Veterans. Region 1 is the toughest in the state with three teams currently ranked and four that have spent time in the poll. No. 4 Bradwell Institute won 53-41 at Statesboro (15-5) before falling at returnee No. 9 Greenbrier 59-56. Statesboro closed their week with a 36-27 loss to No. 7 Ware County who climbs three spots after dropping the Blue Devils from the Top 10. Bradwell Institute and Ware County are now tied atop the standings at 5-1 while Statesboro and Greenbrier sit at 4-2. The four teams have a combined 60-18 record, all with 15 wins apiece. Outside of South/Coastal Georgia’s gauntlet, Hiram (15-3) sinks from No. 5 to unranked after a 61-42 loss at No. 10 Calhoun who is back in the rankings for the first time since Week 7.

Another classification with a new look Top 5 is Class 4A. No. 1 Griffin was toppled by Grayson 55-47 at the MLK Challenge but maintains their position atop the poll. No. 2 Holy Innocents’ got their revenge against No. 5 Westminster, 67-54 dropping the Wildcats three spots. No. 3 Luella moves up with a 43-34 win over No. 7 Hardaway who closed their week by sweeping Northside-Columbus 49-36. No. 9 Chestatee slips a spot following a 61-52 win against North Oconee but a 53-51 defeat at the hands of North Hall. No. 10 Westover also drops a place with a 53-44 loss at Colquitt County.

Things have most definitely changed in Class 3A, of course most notably Region 7. No. 1 Hebron Christian overwhelmed five-man roster Pebblebrook 76-47 at the Nike Elite Showcase behind Amiya Porter and Aubrey Beckham’s 19 points apiece but it was No. 2 Lumpkin County that made waves winning at No. 4 White County 69-43 before drilling No. 3 Wesleyan 70-48 as Mary Mullinax recorded a triple-double with 19 points, 13 rebounds and 10 assists. It was a nightmarish trip for the Wolves to Dahlonega as Coach Carolyn Blackman was ejected and will now miss a crucial rematch with White County and a non-region tilt with Class 7A No. 2 Buford. Up in Northwest Georgia, No. 5 Lakeview-Fort Oglethorpe suffered their first loss of the season, demolished by undefeated powerhouse Bradley Central 74-43 in Tennessee. No. 10 Monroe barely clings onto their spot, hammering Early County 59-25 but blown out by No. 6 Carver-Columbus 68-36 as Caylee Simpson compiled a triple-double with 24 points, 10 rebounds and 10 steals. Mary Persons (17-2) is out of the poll ahead their showdown with replacement No. 9 Peach County. The Bulldogs struggled to beat Upson-Lee 51-38 before losing 48-41 at Jackson. The Trojans just won at Jackson 56-40 and have won eight-straight. Three of Peach County’s five losses have come against teams that have spent time in the Top 10.

Class 2A saw No. 4 Thomson win in overtime at No. 8 Butler 56-51. No. 6 Landmark Christian routed No. 10 Columbia 64-35 to atone for their earlier 54-52 loss, dropping the Eagles four spots this week. No. 7 Dodge County moves up two spots with a nice 58-35 win over Berrien.

While No. 2 Galloway blew past Collins Hill 73-46 on MLK Day, it was Region 8 where all eyes should have been focused this week in Class A D-I. No. 3 Rabun County made a statement, beating Athens Christian (10-7) 61-48 behind Lucy Hood’s 28 points, 5 rebounds, 6 assists and 3 steals before upsetting No. 4 Elbert County in a state championship rematch, 55-49 as Ellie Southards reintroduced herself with 18 points and 6 rebounds. The Blue Devils quickly bounced back with a 77-51 thumping of Fannin County with Niya Moon (22) and Aaniyah Allen (21) combining for 43 points. Dating back to last season, the home team has won the last four meetings between Rabun County and Elbert County; the Blue Devils welcome the LadyCats to the Inferno on February 7. Aforementioned Athens Christian has dropped off the pace in Region 8, out of the rankings after blowing a lead at Tallulah Falls 58-54. Down in Savannah, No. 5 Woodville-Tompkins defeated returnee No. 10 Bryan County for the second time, 63-52. The Redskins are back in the poll however after beating Metter 64-50. No. 7 Lamar County edged Heard County 59-50. Trion (15-2) drops out after another head-scratching loss to Chattooga, 60-58, their lone two losses coming against the 9-10 Indians. No. 9 Bacon County is back in the rankings for the first time since Week 7. The Raiders have not lost since their season-opener. They scored a significant 38-36 win at Pelham to secure sole possession of first place in Region 1.

Class A D-II just got interesting as No. 1 Lake Oconee Academy saw their 35-game winning streak against region opponents shattered as No. 6 Towns County stunned the defending state champs 52-49 as Sarah Shook recorded 20 points, 6 rebounds and 5 assists while impact transfer Brelan Sieveking delivered 15 points and 5 assists, moving the Indians three spots in the poll. Down south, No. 4 Clinch County is on a two-game skid, beat 74-72 at home by No. 2 Turner County before falling 61-58 at Berrien. No. 3 Montgomery County is on the rise, shaking off a sluggish first 16 minutes to race past Jenkins County (14-4) 52-28, Marley Bell posting 25 points, 12 rebounds, 2 assists, 3 steals and 2 blocks on the road to drop the War Eagles out of the Top 10. No. 5 Taylor County knocked out Macon County (14-6) with a 63-56 victory, the Bulldogs also lost 51-43 to debutant No. 9 Manchester to complete their slide out of the Top 10. No. 8 Schley County is struggling, down three slots after a 57-47 loss to Chattahoochee County who was clobbered by Taylor County 78-48 at home. Returning to the rankings is No. 10 Randolph-Clay. The Red Devils are stuck in a free-for-all in Region 1, but have played well as of late on a four-game winning streak with nice victories at Early County 33-32 and against Seminole County 51-34.
