It was an eventful week as region play and showcase events led to five number one ranked teams losing this week as region tournaments inch nearer and nearer.

Class 7A No. 1 Wheeler trailed by 10 at the half against No. 10 Cherokee but stormed back for a 69-60 win on the road before topping North Cobb 68-61. Cherokee slips a spot after also losing at Walton, 48-41. No. 3 Newton shoots up five spots with wins over No. 5 Grayson 54-43 and debutant No. 9 South Gwinnett 49-38, the Comets becoming the fourth team out of Region 4 to enter the Top 10 after winning in overtime at No. 7 Archer 54-52 earlier in the week. The Tigers bounced back with a 59-56 win at Parkview on Friday. No. 6 Pebblebrook falls four spots after a surprising 75-72 home loss against 10-11 Westlake and a narrow 57-56 win over Wilson Academy. Milton (16-6) sinks out of the Top 10 following an 0-3 week which saw the Eagles lose 58-55 at Denmark, get season series swept by Lambert 68-67 and beaten 54-50 by North Mecklenburg, NC at the Longhorn Five-Star Classic.

Only the 10 spot changes in Class 6A as South Paulding (16-6) slips out following a 73-58 home loss to No. 9 Langston Hughes and a too-close-for-comfort 58-55 win over East Paulding. No. 10 Woodward Academy resurfaces with wins over Forest Park (73-53) and Mundy’s Mill (68-47). Elsewhere, No. 3 Lanier pounded North Forsyth 64-44 while No. 5 Grovetown beat Effingham County 68-50. Hampden-Sydney-signee Blake Wilson netted 26 points in No. 7 St. Pius X’s 72-66 win over Riverwood.

No. 1 Kell regains pole position in Class 5A with a pair of blowout wins but more importantly a No. 2 Eagle’s Landing loss, beaten for the first time at No. 4 Dutchtown 54-52 on a tip-in at the buzzer from Adrian Avery. Braxton Cooley led the Bulldogs with 20 points. No. 5 Mays routed Creekside 75-30 on the road behind five double-digit scorers led by Mykel Williams’ 13 points and 8 assists. No. 6 Tri-Cities won 74-67 at Creekside. No. 8 Chapel Hill falls a spot after losing 83-73 at No. 9 Maynard Jackson who cracks the poll for the first time this season after Yusef Bowyer dumped in 34 points. Jones County (14-9) and Lithonia (15-7) drop out. The Greyhounds are on a four-game skid, this week losing 55-45 to No. 2 Eagle’s Landing, 73-69 to Warner Robins and 67-57 at Houston County. The Bulldogs suffered losses to Chamblee (58-56) and Class 3A No. 5 Cedar Grove (64-54). No. 10 Winder-Barrow breaks into the rankings on a five-game winning streak, fresh off a 65-54 win over Flowery Branch. The Bulldoggs have been tough to slow down with Jeremiah Holloway, who missed time early in the season, the senior pouring in 24 points, 6 rebounds, 5 assists and 5 steals against the Falcons.

No. 2 Pace Academy protected home court in their Region 5-4A rematch with No. 1 McDonough, winning 59-50 nursing a healthy double-digit lead for the majority of the game, but it isn’t enough just yet to usurp the War Hawks for the top spot in the state. McDonough drilled No. 8 Lovett on the road 79-50 earlier in the week as the War Hawks held Michigan-commit Christian Anderson to 9 points and forced 12 turnovers. No. 4 Bainbridge knocked Westover (14-6) out of the Top 10 with a 55-47 win at the Boston Garden. No. 5 Madison County rode Grant Smith to 27 points – 16 in the second quarter – in a 72-64 win at No. 6 North Oconee. The Red Raiders finished the week by beating Chestatee 63-57 and may have some impactful outside help transferring in. No. 7 Fayette County climbs three spots with a 75-61 win over Whitewater, avenging their 81-80 overtime loss at the buzzer. Seckinger (15-7) falls back out after a shocking 55-50 loss at North Hall. No. 9 Westside-Macon claws back into the poll after a six-week hiatus, riding a nine-game winning streak. The Seminoles won at Griffin behind Daveon Henderson’s 19 points and 31 combined from Shannon Fountain (16) and Terrell Cordy (15). Making their season debut out of Region 8, No. 10 Walnut Grove enters the poll at 11-11, winning three-straight. The Warriors have battled adversity since the second game of the season when they lost top-scoring option Tyler Jewell to a season-ending injury. Out of Walnut Grove’s 10 in-state losses, nine have come against teams that have spent time in the Top 10, giving the Warriors one of the best strengths of schedule in the classification. Their last three wins have come by an average of 21 points per game, their latest a 68-42 thumping of East Forsyth. The Warriors will be tested right away as they host No. 5 Madison County on Tuesday and visit Seckinger on Friday.

Down in Class 3A, No. 1 Sandy Creek obliterated No. 5 Cedar Grove 91-56 before dropping 59-58 to Gray Collegiate, SC at the Longhorn Five-Star Classic, while the Saints rebounded with a 64-54 win at last week’s Class 5A No. 10 Lithonia. No. 9 Calvary Day sinks three spots after losing at No. 3 Johnson-Savannah 70-42 and at No. 2 Beach 54-48. The Atomsmashers host the Bulldogs on Friday looking to avenge a 64-57 loss. No. 4 Monroe Area survived a 16-4 run from Hart County, countering by scoring the final eight points and holding the Bulldogs scoreless for the last 4:41 to escape 48-47, Vonte Newell scoring seven of his 11 points in the fourth. No. 6 Monroe climbs two spots with a 67-34 beat down at Thomasville. No. 8 Dougherty moves up two spots as well, winning on the road at Carver-Columbus 73-64 and at Crisp County 60-45. White County (12-7) is on a two-game skid, bounced by returnee No. 10 Wesleyan 50-46 and beat by West Hall 61-42.

Things are getting interesting in Region 4-2A as now four teams enter the Top 10. No. 1 Westside-Augusta outlasted No. 10 Thomson 81-80 in overtime before getting upset on the road at No. 5 Putnam County 66-58 after the War Eagles lost 69-54 at No. 9 Butler who is back in the poll for the first time since Week 2. Putnam County got 23 points apiece from Georgia Southern-signee Eren Banks and Landon Bonner in their win over Westside-Augusta, who drilled them 90-68 in their first meeting. Outside of the CSRA, No. 2 Columbia is yet to take over the top spot due to strength of schedule. They crushed Towers (87-32) and McNair (85-38) and have played just three ranked opponents compared to Westside-Augusta’s seven. Model (16-4) exits the poll following a 66-55 loss at North Murray.

Don’t look now, but No. 3 Paideia is the ultimate disrupter and on paper could be considered a state title favorite in Class A D-I as the Pythons have jolted themselves into the Top 5, an exclusive club consisting of all Region 6 teams. Paideia did it again, upsetting last week’s top-ranked team No. 2 Mt. Vernon 53-52 to leap seven spots. For those keeping score at home, the Pythons now hold wins over No. 1 Mt. Bethel, No. 2 Mt. Vernon and No. 4 Mt. Pisgah. The Pythons’ only two Class A D-I losses have come against St. Francis (56-50) and No. 5 King’s Ridge (71-60). Paideia is 3-10 outside of their classification. No. 1 Mt. Bethel had a great week to rise back to the perch, beating No. 5 King’s Ridge 66-50 and wining at No. 4 Mt. Pisgah 59-54. Outside of private school ball, No. 6 Social Circle slips two spots with a 47-45 win at Prince Avenue Christian but a 64-53 loss at Class A D-II No. 5 Wilkinson County. No. 7 Woodville-Tompkins is down a position following a 69-59 loss to New Hampstead. No. 10 Dublin barely clings onto their spot in the rankings after losing 64-59 to Swainsboro.

In Class A D-II, No. 1 Greenforest beat Southwest Atlanta Christian 81-60 and edged Northside-Columbus 79-72 while No. 2 Christian Heritage is now the last unbeaten team in the state following their 84-53 triumph over Southwest Atlanta Christian. The middle of the poll sees serious movement as No. 4 Calhoun County rises two slots after avenging losses by beating No. 6 Mitchell County 64-41 and winning at Terrell County 58-51. No. 5 Wilkinson County moves up two places with a 64-53 win against last week’s Class A D-I No. 4 Social Circle. No. 9 Chattahoochee County and No. 10 Manchester swap places as the Panthers protected home floor against the Blue Devils, 63-48.
