Heading into Week 5, 11 Top 10 teams will be in action at the Sandy’s Spiel Showcase at Grayson High School this Saturday including four number one ranked teams and three others in their respective classification’s Top 5. The biggest girls event in the state is expected to host college programs from across the country as some of Georgia’s best teams will be on display which will of course lead to plenty of shake-up in the rankings next week. Tickets are available through GoFan.
There is a new top team in Class 7A as No. 2 Brookwood was upended by Class 6A No. 1 River Ridge 70-59, Ohio State-signee Diana Collins’ 11 fourth quarter points not enough to get the Broncos over the hump after opening down 10-0 with UAB-signee Jade Weathersby and Kennedy Daniels missing the first quarter. No. 1 Archer takes over atop the classification, coming off a school-record 97-point performance, beating Mountain View by 72. No. 5 Peachtree Ridge moves up a spot after winning at No. 8 Campbell 52-44, pushing down the Spartans. No. 7 Carrollton tumbles three positions after losing 46-45 at Class 6A No. 4 New Manchester. No. 6 McEachern climbs following a 66-55 win over Class 5A No. 1 Kell. No. 9 North Paulding went 3-0 headlined by a 47-37 win at Class 5A No. 7 Hiram. No. 10 Hillgrove fell 49-38 at Brookwood before beating Pebblebrook 55-52 and holding on at the Sandy’s Spiel Showdown, surviving North Cobb Christian 53-51 as Yolanda Floyd and Kara Boggs scored 10 points apiece while Aryelle King collected 7 points and 5 assists.
Class 6A No. 1 River Ridge’s case as the being the best team in the entire state got stronger as the Knights led wire-to-wire in a 70-59 win over last week’s Class 7A No. 1 Brookwood. The Knights jumped out to a 10-0 lead and nursed the advantage throughout. Once Brookwood was at full strength the Broncos knotted the game up at 27 going into the half but River Ridge regained control and led 45-39 after three quarters. In the fourth, Brookwood tied the game at 51 with 3:58 to play but the Knights responded with a 19-8 run to close. River Ridge won the battle on the boards 42-39 and saw Penn-signee Mataya Gayle record 26 points, 6 rebounds and 6 assists. Freshman Makayla Roberson scored 17 points and held Diana Collins to 10 points through the first three quarters. Kayla Cleveland scored nine of her 16 points in the fourth quarter while Sophia Pearl netted all eight of her points in the second half and Allie Sweet pulled down 13 rebounds and blocked three shots. No. 2 Rockdale County had themselves quite the week as well, toppling No. 3 Lovejoy 56-52 on the road as Danielle Carnegie piled in 36 points and 10 rebounds. The Wildcats rebounded however, earning a 65-55 win at Cherokee at the Sandy’s Spiel Showdown as Bryanna Preston posted 27 points and Austin Peay-signee La’Nya Foster went for 17 points, 14 rebounds, 4 assists, 2 steals and 1 block. No. 4 New Manchester is up two spots following a 46-45 win over last week’s Class 7A No. 4 Carrollton. The Jaguars travel to No. 8 Langston Hughes this Tuesday, the Panthers coming off an idle week. No. 5 Forest Park defeated No. 6 Woodward Academy 69-66 to jump two places and sink the War Eagles a pair. For the first time since January 27, 2017, No. 7 North Forsyth was defeated by South Forsyth 60-51. No. 9 Brunswick came from behind to beat Class A D-I No. 5 Woodville-Tompkins 66-61 as Jamya West scored 25 points. The Pirates then lost 51-47 to Lowndes. No. 10 South Effingham barely holds onto their spot in the rankings after losing at winless Camden County 53-48 and beating last week’s Class 3A No. 10 Calvary Day 63-53.
There have been a lot of losses in Class 5A, but the teams remain the same albeit in a different order. No. 1 Kell remains in pole position after losing 66-55 to Class 7A No. 6 McEachern and beating Class A D-I No. 2 St. Francis 57-54 at Tournament of Champions, but it is feared that Jada Peterson may be lost for the season with a knee injury, increasing the scoring burden placed upon Crystal Henderson who scored 35 points against McEachern and 27 vs. St. Francis. No. 2 Warner Robins won at No. 6 Union Grove 61-48, but the Wolverines actually climb three spots due to winning at No. 8 Jones County 36-31 earlier in the week, dropping the Greyhounds a spot. Look for Union Grove to string together a winning streak and climb in the poll now that they have survived their gauntlet of playing seven ranked teams over their first eight games. No. 7 Hiram lost 47-37 to Class 7A No. 9 North Paulding while No. 9 Calhoun pulled away from South Paulding 53-34 as Lauren Watson sank six threes and finished with 18 points. No. 10 GAC defeated Marist 52-44 but lost 59-56 to Class 3A No. 3 Wesleyan.
The bottom of the poll in Class 4A looks completely different while the top six remain locked in place. No. 5 Baldwin has struggled in tight games against stiff competition going 0-3 vs. Top 10 opponents, their latest heartbreaker coming 39-38 at Class 2A No. 4 Central-Macon. The Bravettes did manage to take out their frustration on Hancock Central however, cruising 72-5. No. 6 Westminster lost 74-58 at Class 3A No. 3 Wesleyan. No. 7 Walnut Grove has salvaged what was on the verge of being a lost season as the Warriors parted ways with Coach Kevin Furtado right before the season. Coach Will Witherspoon and staff stepped up and doubled up coaching both boys and girls and have the Lady Warriors up three spots following wins over Prince Avenue (61-48) and East Hall (75-47). Region 8 foe No. 9 Chestatee slips two spots with a 71-39 loss at Class 3A No. 2 Lumpkin County while East Forsyth (4-2) and North Hall (4-1) completely drop, the Broncos beat 64-53 by Sequoyah and the Trojans knocked off at North Oconee 47-46. No. 8 Hardaway makes their first appearance in the poll coming off a 71-45 win at Harris County. The sophomore trio of 5-foot-10 Mikayla Johnson (19.8 ppg), 5-foot-7 Adazha Burrell (12.8 ppg, 4.8 apg) and 6-foot-2 Akilah Shelton (7 ppg, 5.5 rpg, 2.8 bpg) has led the way. No. 10 Westover also debuts, emerging from the 229 as one of the top teams in the area. The Patriots beat Dougherty 50-36 and won at Valdosta sans Alabama-signee Essence Cody 44-41. The Patriots also have a three-headed monster consisting of 5-foot-4 senior Lundyn Walker (11.3 ppg), 5-foot-6 senior Rayven Thurston (10.5 ppg, 7.8 rpg, 5 apg, 3.5 spg, 3.5 bpg) and 5-foot-10 junior Jada Landers (10.5 ppg, 9 rpg).
Only spots nine and 10 change in Class 3A. No. 2 Lumpkin County defeated Class 4A No. 9 Chestatee 71-39 while No. 3 Wesleyan scored wins over Class 4A No. 6 Westminster (74-58) and Class 5A No. 10 GAC (59-56). No. 4 Lakeview-Fort Oglethorpe boat raced Denmark at the Sandy’s Spiel Showdown 70-34 as Christen Collins netted 20 points and Christina Collins racked up 15 points, 11 rebounds, 7 assists, 6 steals and 2 blocks. No. 5 Pickens pulled away from Darlington 62-40. No. 6 White County rallied from down double digits to win at Habersham Central 40-35 before blasting Class A D-I No. 8 Tallulah Falls 73-40 on the road. No. 8 Cross Creek edged Class 2A No. 8 Northeast-Macon 53-49 at the Blue Storm Showcase, Brayla Harris scoring 16 points while Michaela Bogans had 15 points and 10 rebounds and Tahjae Hawes contributed 13 points and 10 rebounds. Out of the poll is Dawson County (3-2) and Calvary Day (1-2). The Tigers lost 62-61 at East Jackson while the Cavaliers fell 63-53 to Class 6A No. 10 South Effingham. No. 9 Monroe resurfaces after a 3-0 week highlighted by wins at Bainbridge 48-38 and at Lee County 53-45. No. 10 Mary Persons debuts following a 55-26 win vs. Howard. 5-foot-8 sophomore Anaja Lucear leads the team in scoring at 12 points per game.
Class 2A No. 4 Central-Macon made a Middle Georgia statement, beating Class 4A No. 5 Baldwin 39-38 behind Taliah Grier’s 14 points and Alaya Grane’s 12. The Lady Chargers have a chance to score another big win against Class 4A No. 4 Stockbridge this Saturday at the Sandy’s Spiel Showcase. No. 6 Banks County gladly welcomed back Emmanuel-signee Kamryn Grier in their 60-25 win over Commerce, Grier netting a team-high 15 points in her season debut. No. 8 Northeast-Macon moves up a spot following an 0-2 week against tough competition, losing 63-54 at Veterans and falling 53-49 to Class 3A No. 8 Cross Creek at the Blue Storm Showcase. Laney (1-2) drops out following a 60-58 win at Richmond Academy. No. 10 Murray County is back in the Top 10 battling through adversity. The Indians avenged their season-opening loss to Northwest Whitfield, beating the Bruins 48-45 as Ella Dotson scored 12 points. The Indians have been without Carson-Newman-signee Mattie Nuckolls all season, the All-State combo-forward out with an ankle sprain.
No. 2 St. Francis’s grip on the two-spot in Class A D-I may be getting a little looser following a 62-59 win over Rabun Gap and a 57-54 loss to Class 5A No. 1 Kell at the Tournament of Champions. The Knights are now 4-4 but their strength of schedule keeps them buoyed slightly above No. 3 Elbert County who cruised to three victories, highlighted by a 68-44 win against Hart County. No. 5 Woodville-Tompkins couldn’t hold on in a 66-61 loss to Class 6A No. 9 Brunswick. No. 8 Tallulah Falls is down two spots with a 55-52 loss at Prince Avenue and a 73-40 defeat at the hands of Class 3A No. 6 White County. Athens Christian (4-2) slides out of the poll after winning at Lakeview Academy just 48-41 after No. 4 Rabun County beat the Lions 88-40 and then losing in overtime to Class A D-II No. 1 Lake Oconee Academy 44-36. No. 10 Bryan County re-enters the Top 10 fresh off a 53-30 win against Savannah.
Class A D-II No. 1 Lake Oconee Academy had a pair of nice road wins, blowing out East Jackson 59-37 and surviving last week’s Class A D-I No. 9 Athens Christian in overtime 44-36. The Titans will see their biggest test of the season this Saturday at the Sandy’s Spiel Showcase as they battle Class 7A No. 9 North Paulding. No. 4 Turner County moves up a spot after winning at Worth County 51-22 and beating Pelham 53-37. No. 5 Schley County loses ground but opened up their season with a 58-35 victory at Worth County. No. 7 Mt. Zion-Carrollton holds onto their spot after a 57-38 loss to Handley, AL. No. 10 Charlton County is down two places with a 69-65 loss to Bacon County while No. 8 Towns County picked up a pair of out-of-state wins. Telfair County plumets out of the Top 10 with a 55-26 loss at Wilcox County. No. 9 Randolph-Clay breaks in following a 3-0 week keyed by wins against Mitchell County 43-32 and Early County 36-35.
