Football season has finally ended, swinging the full spotlight onto high school basketball in the state of Georgia.
Class 7A No. 1 Wheeler suffered their first loss of the season at Battle in the Peach, 73-70 to Columbus, FL. No. 4 McEachern slips two spots after being upset by No. 6 Pebblebrook 64-63. No. 2 Grayson topped Berkmar at the Hawks-Naismith Holiday Classic 67-47, Gicarri Harris recording 21 points, 8 rebounds, 7 assists and 2 steals. No. 3 Norcross held off No. 7 Newton 73-71 in overtime at Hawks-Naismith behind UGA-signee Lamariyon Jordan’s 18 points including his game-winner. Mier Panoam added 13 points, 16 rebounds and 5 assists. Newton was led by UConn-signee Stephon Castle’s 28 points, 11 rebounds, 6 assists and 1 block. Jabez Jenkins chipped in 18 points as the Rams were without Ashton Pennamon and Indiana-signee Jakai Newton who is inching closer to making his season debut. Earlier in the week Newton held on at home against No. 8 Archer 54-50. No. 5 Milton snatched a pair of wins at the HoopHall Classic, beating Gray Collegiate, SC 55-53 and Millennium, AZ 61-46. No. 10 Carrollton slips a spot with a 62-57 overtime loss at Class 5A No. 3 Hiram, but will now welcome Caleb Odom off the football field this week.
In Class 6A, No. 1 Alexander won at No. 9 South Paulding 86-68 before surviving Paulding County in overtime 75-72. South Paulding actually moves up in the poll this week following their 69-54 win at previously 8-0 North Cobb led by Jeremiah Taylor’s 26 points and 7 rebounds. No. 2 Grovetown ran their losing streak up to 5-straight, hammered by Columbus, FL 81-55. No. 5 St. Pius X climbs a position after losing 58-55 to Class 5A No. 2 Eagle’s Landing before going on the road to hand Walton their first loss of the season 56-43 as Tulane-signee Spencer Elliott posted 21 points. No. 6 Langston Hughes won a pair of tight games against New Manchester (56-54) and Newnan (53-48) and could be receiving some help off the gridiron if any of the Panthers’ state champion football athletes return to play their senior seasons, most notably 6-foot-6 Ohio State tight end Jelani Thurman and 6-foot-7 UGA offensive tackle Bo Hughley. No. 8 Etowah got off the schneid with a trio of wins without Virginia Tech-signee Brandon Rechsteiner highlighted by a 47-46 victory against Cherokee who was missing Tayden Owens. North Forsyth (4-3) departs following losses to Lambert 65-63 and Sequoyah in overtime 77-75 at the Cherokee-Forsyth Challenge. No. 10 Blessed Trinity pops into the poll at 8-3 with their only three losses coming to Class A D-I No. 1 Mt. Bethel 62-54, 5-1 Walton on a buzzer-beating three 50-49 and No. 5 St. Pius X 63-59. 6-foot-9 Belmont-signee Brigham Rogers anchors the Titans inside.
No. 1 Kell’s impressive resume continues to build in Class 5A, scoring a 63-51 win over Class A D-I No. 4 Mt. Vernon Presbyterian at Hawks-Naismith as Auburn-commit Peyton Marshall collected 19 points, 13 rebounds and 2 blocks. No. 2 Eagle’s Landing escaped Class 6A No. 5 St. Pius X 58-55 on the road and closed the week with a 68-51 win at Warner Robins. No. 3 Hiram edged Class 7A No. 10 Carrollton 62-57 in overtime. No. 4 Mays added Roc Lee to the roster, who is on pace to shatter GHSA transfer records as over the course of his career he has bounced from Berkmar to Riverwood to Solid Rock Academy to Pebblebrook back to Berkmar and now Mays, his fifth school in less than three full seasons. Even with the new addition, the Raiders were upended by No. 9 Creekside 73-69 in overtime, the Seminoles resurfacing in the Top 10 as Tim Gaulden netted 24 points. No. 5 Jones County took their first loss of the year, losing at Warner Robins 58-55. No. 6 Dutchtown lost 50-44 to South Gwinnett while No. 7 Lithonia also lost to the Comets, 49-45. Out of the rankings are Tri-Cities (3-4), Tucker (4-4) and Centennial (5-3). Tri-Cities’ tough schedule has overwhelmed them even with the additions of Malique Johnson, Shamori Alcindor, Caden Goins and Dayton Richardson. The Bulldogs fall out after losing their first region game to No. 8 Chapel Hill 78-63, who returns to the poll. Tri-Cities has lost to three Top 10 teams by an average of 22.3 points per game. Chapel Hill has challenged themselves as well this season losing early in the year to Class 4A No. 2 Pace Academy (72-63) and Class 7A No. 5 Milton (67-61). Tucker tumbles out of the rankings due to a 64-44 loss at Class 4A No. 6 Baldwin while Centennial was crushed by No. 1 Kell 97-66 at home. No. 10 Heritage-Conyers is back after wins over Winder-Barrow (76-64) and Johns Creek (64-44).
There is significant movement in Class 4A. No. 1 McDonough turned back No. 4 Lovett in Region 5-4A play 68-58 behind Avante Nichols’ 21 points and 3 blocks. The Lions bounced back by beating Woodland-Stockbridge 65-57 and topped Kenwood, IL 74-67 at Battle in the Peach as Kyle Walters scored 24 points. No. 3 Fayette County clings onto their position after getting drubbed by rival Class 3A No. 1 Sandy Creek 92-66. No. 5 Southwest DeKalb leaps four spots after toppling No. 8 Miller Grove 49-35 and knocking off last week’s Class 2A No. 2 Columbia 47-46 with Messiah Mergan scoring 12 points. No. 6 Baldwin is hitting their stride ahead of the Sandy’s Spiel Shootout, beating last week’s Class 5A No. 8 Tucker 64-44, Rudolph Satcher erupting for 28 points and 15 rebounds. No. 9 Westside-Macon fell at Spalding 63-58 but outlasted Shiloh in two overtimes at Battle in the Peach 76-73. No. 10 Madison County plumets five spots after losing at the buzzer to first-year program Seckinger 57-56, but closed the week strong by beating last week’s Class 3A No. 9 Hart County 62-46. Stephenson (5-3) exits after a 43-42 loss to Holy Innocents’. No. 7 North Oconee debuts after a big week saw the Titans win at Walnut Grove 63-57, blow out Seckinger 73-35 and avenge their only loss of the season by shutting down Class 3A No. 6 Oconee County 50-34 after the Warriors entered play averaging over 70 points per game. 6-foot-3 freshman Khamari Brooks led the Titans with 14 points and 7 rebounds.
Class 3A is a mess at the bottom of the poll and sees No. 1 Sandy Creek rise back to the top following a 92-66 win against Class 4A No. 3 Fayette County and No. 3 Johnson-Savannah’s shocking 65-62 loss at newly ranked No. 7 Calvary Day who had lost to winless Liberty County 54-48 the night prior. Strength of schedule jumps No. 2 Cedar Grove above undefeated No. 4 Beach. The Saints scored a great win over 10-2 Rabun Gap 58-57, freshman Manny Green posting 20 points, 9 rebounds and 2 blocks. Beach won at Savannah Christian 56-37 after Johnson-Savannah had beaten the Raiders 90-50 the day before. No. 5 Cross Creek is still stuck in neutral, losing 64-45 to North Augusta, SC, but no one below them has played any better to pass the Razorbacks up. No. 6 Oconee County maintains their spot after losing 50-34 at Class 4A No. 7 North Oconee to split the season series. No. 8 Monroe loses ground following a 63-48 loss at Westover. No. 9 Wesleyan is on the verge of dropping out after a 47-36 loss to White County. No. 10 Monroe Area picked up road wins over Loganville (58-54) and Apalachee (70-56) before losing their rematch at Winder-Barrow 59-52 who returned Jeremiah Holloway to the lineup. Hart County (4-4) slips out of the Top 10 with a 48-34 win at Morgan County sandwiched between losses to Daniel, SC 73-59 and Class 4A No. 10 Madison County 62-46.
No. 1 Westside-Augusta’s margin for error in Class 2A is getting slim. The Patriots are still atop the classification after a 77-73 loss at Augusta Christian. No. 3 Thomson drilled Class A D-II No. 4 Wilkinson County 82-59 and will now welcome back Jahkiaus Jones off the football field after winning a state title. No. 4 Columbia falls two spots with a 47-46 loss at Class 4A No. 5 Southwest DeKalb. No. 5 Providence Christian climbs three spots after a 2-0 week was highlighted by a 73-64 win against Athens Christian. No. 6 Sumter County lost 71-53 at Lee County while No. 7 Putnam County was upset at Morgan County 70-69. No. 8 Drew Charter played without Cedric Taylor to start the week, losing to Buford 64-49 and surviving in overtime against Mt. Paran 61-52 before getting back on track as Taylor returned in their 93-62 rout of South Atlanta. No. 9 Windsor Forest lost 69-55 to Potter’s House Christian, FL. North Cobb Christian (4-4) got Gabe Bolden eligible but lost 59-58 in double overtime at Walker in his debut, spoiling his 14 points. No. 10 Therrell becomes the fourth team out of Region 6 to join the poll at some point this season. The Panthers defeated Walker 47-36.
Class A D-I saw No. 2 King’s Ridge best No. 4 Mt. Vernon Presbyterian 73-63 on the road after beating Paideia 71-60 to rise a spot as No. 3 Mt. Pisgah fell 71-46 to Knoxville Catholic, TN at Battle in the Peach. Mt. Vernon Presbyterian was also defeated by Class 5A No. 1 Kell 63-51 at Hawks-Naismith. No. 6 Darlington climbs following a 3-0 week and surprise losses for No. 7 Tallulah Falls to Oglethorpe County 66-65 and No. 8 Woodville-Tompkins to Richmond Hill 57-53. No. 9 Dublin and No. 10 Chattooga survived close calls, the Irish escaping Dodge County 57-55 and the Indians holding off Dade County 57-53, both games on the road.
Class A D-II No. 2 Christian Heritage went on the road and blew out St. Francis 76-57. No. 3 Portal made two statements, beating Statesboro 77-69 behind Amir Jackson (20), Joseph Thomas (20) and Elijah Coleman (15)’s combined 55 points and winning at No. 4 Wilkinson County, who ended their season in the Sweet 16 last year, 65-62 as Coleman dumped in 28 points. Wilkinson County also lost 82-59 at Class 2A No. 3 Thomson, but closed the week with a 64-58 win at No. 10 Macon County, who drilled Chattahoochee County (3-2) 72-43 to boot the Panthers from the Top 10. No. 6 Mitchell County soars into the rankings after a key 49-41 win over No. 7 Calhoun County.
