A busy week of action sees nine new teams enter the state rankings including six first timers this season.

The middle to bottom of Class 7A looks completely different this week with new names bursting onto the scene after hot starts. No. 1 Grayson continued on their war path stomping Class A D-I No. 1 Mt. Vernon 76-56 at the Hawks-Naismith Classic. Rutgers-signee Ace Bailey had a historic performance for No. 2 McEachern in an 84-64 win over Pebblebrook, exploding for 41 points and 26 rebounds. No. 3 Berkmar maintains their spot in the poll after losing 59-56 to Norcross but bouncing back to beat Osborne (3-6) 50-48, the Cardinals out of the Top 10 riding a three-game losing streak, also beat in overtime at Northgate 72-69 without Akai Fleming. No. 4 Wheeler lost 66-52 at home at the Battle in the Peach against Class 5A No. 1 Kell. No. 5 Newton defeated last week’s Class A D-I No. 9 Mt. Pisgah 63-49 at Battle in the Peach. No. 9 Walton suffered a 46-44 loss at Class 6A No. 7 St. Pius X, Wofford-signee Luke Flynn missing a three at the buzzer. Mountain View (5-3) exits the rankings on a three-game losing streak, beaten by Class 5A No. 7 Winder-Barrow 75-70 and Peachtree Ridge 62-59. No. 6 Dacula debuts in the middle of the poll as first-year Head Coach Derrick Herbert has guided the Falcons to a 9-1 start after a 6-20 season a year ago. The Falcons won 71-61 in overtime at No. 7 Archer as Elahi Akida posted 21 points and 21 rebounds and topped Grovetown 46-38 at Battle in the Peach. Also making their debut is No. 10 Brookwood, who jumpstarted their week with a 62-52 win against Dacula and a 64-62 overtime victory against Parkview.

In Class 6A, No. 1 Alexander held off No. 9 South Paulding 78-68 and later won at Norcross in the Hawks-Naismith Classic 56-50. South Paulding moves up a spot after the hard-fought loss and wins at Douglas County in double overtime 74-71 and against Hiram 72-61, Andrew LaVigne netting 27 points. No. 2 Shiloh dismantled No. 5 Riverwood 80-57 at Battle in the Peach, dropping the Raiders two spots as Jullien Cole dumped in 25 points and 7 rebounds followed by Tylis Jordan’s 23 points and 9 rebounds. No. 7 St. Pius X secured a 46-44 win at home against Class 7A No. 9 Walton. No. 8 Lee County edged Monroe 58-56 while No. 10 Lakeside-Evans fell 64-56 to North Augusta, SC.

Defending state champion No. 1 Kell is rounding into form in Class 5A blowing out Centennial 86-50, Cambridge 84-33 and Class 7A No. 4 Wheeler at Wheeler in the Battle of the Peach 66-52, South Florida-signee CJ Brown pouring in 29 points. The return of Kennesaw State-signee Mekhi Turner is on the horizon for No. 2 Maynard Jackson who continues to win. The emergence of Cam Dover has been a storyline to follow this season, the 6-foot-7 junior recorded a triple-double in a 75-56 win against Villa Rica posting 29 points, 10 rebounds and 10 blocks. The Jaguars netted a 71-63 win over No. 5 Mays but the Raiders rebounded with an 83-56 win at Class A D-I No. 6 Paideia. No. 4 Eagle’s Landing raced past Warner Robins 77-52 while No. 6 Decatur knocked Tucker (4-4) from the rankings, edging the Tigers 58-57. No. 7 Winder-Barrow is up two spots after getting revenge against Class 3A No. 8 Monroe Area, blasting the Purple Hurricanes 64-41, Brian Arnold scoring 13 points. No. 9 Jones County defeated Warner Robins 73-71. No. 10 Chapel Hill sinks four spots with an 82-77 loss at No. 8 Tri-Cities, who resurfaces in the poll behind Jayden London and freshman Tre Keith’s 19 points apiece.

The Region 8-4A title hunt has gotten interesting. No. 3 Madison County is averaging an explosive 84.6 points per game, rising two spots in the poll after dumping No. 5 Seckinger 83-66. The Jaguars leap up four spots this week, rebounding with a 63-61 win over No. 6 North Oconee behind Carter Watkins and Keith Banks’ 20 points apiece, dropping the Titans two places. North Oconee opened their week however with a 60-51 win against No. 7 Walnut Grove, sliding the Warriors a position in the poll. Outside of Region 8, No. 1 Pace Academy beat Milton 78-57 at the Hawks-Naismith Classic. No. 4 Holy Innocents’ fell 94-57 to North Mecklenburg, NC. No. 9 Fayette County edged Northgate 75-74.

There is slight movement at the bottom of the Class 3A poll with Groves (4-4) dropping out after a 62-49 loss at Liberty County. No. 10 Johnson-Savannah is back in with a 3-0 week highlighted by beating Calvary Day 75-58, Joshua Quarterman collecting 19 points, 4 assists and 5 steals while Favion Kirkwood posted 17 points and 7 rebounds in his second game back. Elsewhere in the Top 10, No. 4 Cross Creek survived overtime at Burke County 63-59 before falling at The Bash to Rock Creek Christian, MD 69-57. No. 7 Dougherty avenged a season-opening 51-46 loss at Westover by beating the Patriots 60-45. No. 8 Monroe Area fell 64-41 to Class 5A No. 7 Winder-Barrow after beating a Brent Williams-led Loganville 73-61.

There is serious shakeup in Class 2A below No. 1 Columbia who outlasted Landmark Christian in overtime on the road 70-67. No. 2 Westside-Augusta clawed out a 59-58 win over North Augusta, SC. No. 3 ELCA springs up five spots with a 58-44 win over last week’s Class A D-I No. 2 Darlington at the Sewer Classic, Ese Aighokbae posting 14 points. No. 6 Walker climbs three spots with a 48-43 win at No. 10 North Cobb Christian, dropping the Eagles three spots. No. 8 Dodge County is down four places with a 66-64 loss at newly ranked Class A D-I No. 8 East Laurens.

Class A D-I is still trying to figure itself out behind No. 1 Mt. Vernon who thrashed No. 3 King’s Ridge 74-44 on the road before losing 76-56 to Class 7A No. 1 Grayson at the Hawks-Naismith Classic. The Tigers also lost to Creekside Christian 73-72 at Battle in the Peach but opened their week by beating No. 6 Paideia 60-52. The Pythons hold tight to their position after knocking Mt. Pisgah (3-8) out of the rankings with a 54-46 victory before losing 83-56 to Class 5A No. 5 Mays. The Patriots ride a six-game losing streak out of the Top 10, also beaten by No. 5 St. Francis 71-61 and Class 7A No. 5 Newton 63-49 at Battle in the Peach. No. 2 Savannah is up two spots with a 63-48 win at No. 7 Woodville-Tompkins. No. 4 Darlington fell behind 18-0 to Class 2A No. 3 ELCA at the Sewer Classic and could never recover, losing 58-44 to sink two places. Oglethorpe County (5-2) falls from the rankings with a 52-49 loss at Hart County. No. 8 East Laurens debuts after topping last week’s Class 2A No. 4 Dodge County 66-64. No. 10 Mt. Bethel reenters the rankings riding a five-game winning streak.

A new number one has emerged in Class A D-II as there are significant changes all throughout the poll. No. 1 Portal climbs to the perch after a 3-0 week vs. one Class 5A school and two Class 6A schools winning against Statesboro (60-56), at Effingham County (68-54) and at Evans (58-45). No. 2 Calhoun County defeated No. 6 Mitchell County 71-59. No. 3 Macon County is officially a house of horrors for No. 4 Christian Heritage who sinks three spots, the Bulldogs beating the Lions 54-49 after ending their season in the Sweet 16 a season ago, lifting Macon County three spots. No. 5 Greenforest lost 68-65 in overtime to Milton at Battle in the Peach. Clinch County (1-1), Randolph-Clay (4-3) and Turner County (4-1) all exit the poll. The Panthers lost 65-54 in overtime to Cook, the Red Devils lost to Miller County 66-59 and to debutant No. 8 Seminole County 54-45 while the Titans fell 53-48 at Pelham. No. 9 Terrell County and No. 10 Warren County make their first appearances in the poll following 3-0 weeks.
