Heading into the Christmas Break there was no shortage of head-turning results this past week. Early season pretenders and late season contenders are beginning to appear, but all that matters is who is playing their best basketball come February and March.
The only movement in Class 7A comes at the very bottom of the poll. No. 3 Berkmar collected a 71-64 win over Class 6A No. 2 Shiloh at the Academy Sports Showcase, Eddie Cooke III posting 17 points and 9 rebounds. No. 7 Archer crushed last week’s Class 4A No. 5 Seckinger at the Sandy’s Spiel Shootout 80-53 as Darrian Joseph exploded for 32 points while Wofford-signee Kahmare Holmes recorded 25 points, 10 rebounds, 5 assists and 6 steals. Brookwood (8-3) drops out following a 68-64 loss at newly ranked Class 5A No. 9 GAC. No. 10 Valdosta debuts fresh off road wins at Westover (59-41) and Tift County (40-30).
It was a rough week for Class 6A as six teams in the Top 10 lost, forcing two teams out of the poll. No. 2 Shiloh holds tight after losing 71-64 to Class 7A No. 3 Berkmar at the Academy Sports Showcase. No. 4 Woodward Academy lost 64-56 to Hillgrove at the War Eagle Classic to drop a spot before bouncing back with a 73-56 win against Osborne. No. 5 St. Pius X climbs two spots, outlasting No. 6 Riverwood 90-87 in double overtime, the Raiders missing 17 free throws while Harris Reynolds dumped in 31 points and 11 rebounds. The Golden Lions could have jumped even higher but were upset by Class A D-I No. 7 Mt. Bethel 70-69 to close the week. No. 3 Langston Hughes rises three spots above the wreckage after surviving South Paulding (3-4) on the road in overtime 60-59. The Spartans fall out of the Top 10 after seeing St. Anne-Pacelli net 12 threes in a 73-46 loss at the Sandy’s Spiel Shootout. No. 7 Jonesboro tumbles three spots after losing 75-59 to Class 4A No. 2 North Oconee at the Sandy’s Spiel Shootout without Head Coach Dan Maehlman who missed the game with the flu, allowing 11 threes to spoil a 30-point effort from Montez Redding. No. 8 Lee County squashed last week’s Class A D-II No. 9 Terrell County 69-41. Lakeside-Evans (5-3) falls out of the poll after losing to North Augusta, SC for the second time, 51-49. No. 9 Houston County makes their first appearance with a pair of wins at the Bear Brawl bringing their winning streak to six games. No. 10 Pope debuts as well riding a seven-game unbeaten stretch, most recently toppling Woodstock 55-49.
Class 5A has seen constant change throughout the season. No. 3 Dutchtown earned Region 2 wins over Warner Robins (70-54) and Union Grove (70-45). No. 4 Decatur jumps two spots with a 50-49 win over No. 5 Mays who knocked off Class 3A No. 2 Douglass 66-58 on the road earlier in the week. No. 6 Jones County surges up three places following a 61-60 win over No. 7 Eagle’s Landing who plummets three spaces after also losing at Class A D-II No. 4 Greenforest 45-44. Winder-Barrow (10-3) slides out with a 66-62 loss at Jefferson while Chapel Hill (4-3) gets nudged out due to inactivity. No. 9 GAC bursts into the rankings following a pair of wins over previously ranked Class 7A opponents, beating last week’s No. 10 Brookwood 68-64 and Mountain View 68-65. No. 10 Bradwell Institute forces their way into the poll at 9-0, blowing out Ware County (70-50), Coffee (62-36) and Glynn Academy (68-41).
It was a whirlwind of a week for Class 4A. No. 2 North Oconee pole vaults up four spots after statement wins, destroying No. 5 Madison County 79-45 to drop the Red Raiders two spots and shooting 11-18 from beyond the arc at the Sandy’s Spiel Shootout in a 75-59 rout of last week’s Class 6A No. 4 Jonesboro, Byrd Carter pouring in 26 points and 9 rebounds. No. 9 Seckinger tumbles four spots with an 80-53 loss at the Sandy’s Spiel Shootout to Class 7A No. 7 Archer, Carter Watkins finishing with 18 points. No. 4 McDonough sinks two places, beating Lancaster, SC 56-45 but boat raced by Class 2A No. 3 Westside-Augusta 77-44 at the Blackout Signature Series. No. 7 Central-Carrollton inches up a slot for winning the SMI Christmas Classic Championship, going 3-0 with a rocky 53-51 win over Heard County in the opening round before beating Villa Rica 69-55 and blasting Class A D-I No. 10 Temple in the title game 59-33. No. 8 Baldwin rises two spots after showcasing their firepower, beating Spalding 106-85 as Isaiah Dennis netted eight threes en route to 29 points.
The top of the poll below No. 1 Sandy Creek in Class 3A continues to suffer losses but sees limited movement. No. 2 Douglass fell 66-58 to Class 5A No. 5 Mays but maintains their position while No. 3 Cedar Grove lost 52-46 at Tucker. No. 5 Cross Creek slips a spot with a 50-49 loss at North Augusta, SC, giving way for No. 4 Hebron Christian to climb a position following wins over Lambert 75-72 and Union Grove 62-51. No. 6 Dougherty secured a key win in a hostile environment at Class A D-II No. 2 Calhoun County 81-77. No. 7 Monroe Area rises with a 65-62 win over last week’s Class 2A No. 3 ELCA at the Sandy’s Spiel Shootout, Trip Griffith scoring 21 points while Vonte Newell compiled 14 points, 5 rebounds, 10 assists, 3 steals and 3 blocks. Johnson-Savannah (5-5) is back out of the poll following a 54-43 loss against Class A D-I No. 6 Woodville-Tompkins at the SCCPSS Holiday Classic. No. 10 Monroe (5-2) debuts with wins over Bainbridge 65-55 and Sumter County 73-43.
The power is shifting some in Class 2A. No. 1 Columbia maintains their spot atop the perch after beating No. 5 ELCA 87-70, the Chargers also losing 65-62 at Class 3A No. 7 Monroe Area in the Sandy’s Spiel Shootout to drop two spaces. No. 2 Thomson knocked off No. 3 Westside-Augusta 71-68 on the road. The Patriots quickly rebounded however with a 77-44 rout of last week’s Class 4A No. 2 McDonough at the Blackout Signature Series. No. 4 Butler defeated Putnam County 76-61 while No. 9 Walker lost 49-42 at Lassiter to sink three spots. North Cobb Christian (6-1) was idle and gets bumped out of the poll to make room for No. 10 Toombs County who hammered Vidalia 66-51 on the road. 6-foot-5 senior wing Dominic Eason has powered the Bulldogs averaging 19.9 points, 5.4 rebounds, 1.9 assists, 1.3 steals and 2 blocks per game.
In Class A D-I, No. 1 Mt. Vernon survived Wilson Academy 59-58 while No. 4 Savannah fell to Windsor Forest 63-61 at the SCCPSS Holiday Classic to tumble two spaces. No. 5 St. Francis went on the road and edged Wesleyan 59-52. No. 6 Woodville-Tompkins rises after a 3-0 week highlighted by wins over Benedictine 69-59 and last week’s Class 3A No. 10 Johnson-Savannah 54-43 at the SCCPSS Holiday Classic. No. 7 Mt. Bethel jumps three slots with a 70-69 win over Class 6A No. 5 St. Pius X. No. 9 East Laurens slips a spot with a 60-44 loss to Statesboro while No. 10 Temple does the same, falling 59-33 to Class 4A No. 7 Central-Carrollton in the SMI Christmas Classic Championship.
Class A D-II No. 1 Portal escaped Bryan County with a 51-50 win. No. 2 Calhoun County lost 81-77 to Class 3A No. 6 Dougherty but recorded their second and third wins against A D-II Top 10 opponents, beating No. 8 Seminole County 53-39 and No. 5 Macon County 66-63 at the Williams Bland Classic. The Indians hold tight thanks to a 66-57 win over Terrell County (5-4) who falls out of the poll riding a three-game losing streak, also beaten by No. 6 Mitchell County 66-62. No. 3 Christian Heritage rises after a 72-70 overtime win against Hamilton Heights, TN, Trevecca Nazarene-signee Jax Abernathy pumping in 40 points. No. 4 Greenforest is up a spot with a 45-44 win against last week’s Class 5A No. 4 Eagle’s Landing. Warren County (4-3) couldn’t last a week in the rankings, losing three-straight games. No. 9 Clinch County resurfaces after a 65-57 overtime win against Ware County. No. 10 Wheeler County debuts by beating Dublin 62-61.
