2022 is finishing with a flurry with big showcase events closing the year. As we head into the Christmas break, some classifications are freezing still while others are melting with movement.
The only change in Class 7A this week is at the bottom of the poll, with the top nine remaining in place. At the top, No. 1 Archer suffered their first loss of the season, beat by national powerhouse Hoover, AL 77-51 at the Big Orange Classic. No. 2 Brookwood dominated last week’s Class 5A No. 10 GAC 82-50, Danielle Osho collecting 23 points and 8 rebounds while Ohio State-signee Diana Collins became the school’s all-time leading scorer with 1,753 points as she dumped in 21 points, 11 rebounds and 4 assists. No. 4 Buford squeezed by Rabun Gap 58-54 and blew out last week’s Class 5A No. 9 Calhoun 80-42 behind Ava Grace Watson’s 25 points at the North Georgia Showcase. No. 8 North Paulding netted a pair of wins at the War Lodge Classic, beating Pebblebrook 44-32 and Dawson County 51-38. No. 9 South Forsyth snuck past Brentwood Academy, TN 38-37 but lost in overtime at Providence Christian Academy, TN 68-65, North Georgia-signee Ava McGlockton scoring a career-high 26 points. Lowndes (5-3) is bounced from the poll with a 54-44 loss to Class 6A No. 8 Brunswick. No. 10 Hillgrove resurfaces after an idle week buoyed by their strength of schedule and quality wins.
There is major movement in Class 6A as the cannibalism inside Region 3 has fully begun. Right above the madness however, No. 1 River Ridge’s shot at an undefeated season came to a close as they lost at the Big Orange Classic, defeated by No. 13 in the nation Hoover, AL 66-52. Spots two through five belong to Region 3, hands down the strongest region in the entire state regardless of classification. No. 2 Forest Park climbs two spots after winning at No. 5 Lovejoy 58-56 to move atop the region standings at a perfect 5-0 while sinking the Wildcats to 3-2 and dropping them two spots in the rankings. No. 3 Woodward Academy ascends four places with a win over No. 4 Rockdale County 78-72 as Kayla Whitner netted 24 points and Kameron Herring scored 22, moving the War Eagles into a tie for third place at 3-2 in the region and handing Rockdale their first loss and dropping them two spots in the poll even through the Bulldogs rebounded with a 65-54 win against Class 4A No. 5 Stockbridge. Woodward Academy’s monster week also included a 75-65 win over Class A D-I No. 1 Galloway 75-65 at the War Eagle Classic. Outside of the Region 3 torture chamber, No. 8 Brunswick picked off last week’s Class 7A No. 10 Lowndes 54-44 while No. 9 New Manchester tumbles three spots with a 59-56 loss to Cass in the SMI Christmas Classic Championship. South Effingham (7-2) drops out after another loss to Camden County, this time defeated in overtime 60-56. No. 10 Veterans makes their long-awaited debut. Loaded with impact freshmen and multiple transfers, the War Hawks nabbed their first truly significant victory of the season, topping Carrollton 57-46 at the Houston County Bear Brawl.
Class 5A No. 1 Kell breezed by Class 4A No. 2 Luella on the road 63-46 as Crystal Henderson scored 23 points. No. 4 Bradwell Institute made an early statement within Region 1, winning at Ware County 61-42 as Taniyah Bowman went 7-9 from beyond the arc to finish with 28 points, 5 assists and 3 steals. Calhoun (6-2) and GAC (4-6) exit the Top 10. Calhoun was drilled in their rematch at Class 7A No. 4 Buford 80-42 while GAC was overpowered by Class 7A No. 2 Brookwood 82-50. For the first time since opening the season ranked No. 4, No. 9 Greenbrier is back in the poll. The Wolfpack are riding a five-game winning streak with their only losses coming in their season opener to No. 7 Jones County (56-48) and to nationally ranked Hoover, AL (54-31). Greenbrier crushed Lakeside-Evans 63-28 and will host Class 2A No. 3 Josey this Thursday. D-I recruit 6-foot-3 Caitlin Staley is averaging 14.5 points, 6.5 rebounds and 2.7 blocks. No. 10 Arabia Mountain is also a returnee, back in the rankings for the first time since Week 2. Strength of schedule is very worrisome but the Rams have reeled off eight-straight wins in blowout fashion with their only loss coming to Class 4A No. 8 Walnut Grove 64-58. If the Rams can beat Class 3A No. 8 Cross Creek next Tuesday, Arabia Mountain has a realistic chance of winning out and posting a 23-1 mark as they are the significant favorites to run away with the Region 4 title, the weakest region in the classification.
There are no changes in the Class 4A poll this week. After No. 2 Luella pitched a 71-0 shutout against winless Mt. Zion-Jonesboro, the Lions fell at home to Class 5A No. 1 Kell 63-46. No. 3 Westminster defeated Southwest DeKalb 57-43 before slipping past Blessed Trinity 56-52, Stanford-signee Courtney Ogden exploding for 40 points and 14 rebounds. No. 5 Stockbridge lost 65-54 at last week’s Class 6A No. 2 Rockdale County before bouncing back with a 56-44 win at Class 2A No. 9 Thomson. No. 8 Walnut Grove went box-and-one against No. 9 Chestatee, denying Riley Black the ball in the fourth quarter as the Warriors won on the road 62-57. No. 10 Westover lost 37-31 at Tift County but hammered Sumter County 51-30.
Class 3A sees no movement in the Top 10. No. 1 Hebron Christian defeated Cherokee 69-41 at the North Georgia Showcase. No. 3 Wesleyan took down Class 2A No. 6 Landmark Christian 56-46 while No. 4 Lumpkin County survived at No. 6 Pickens 59-56. No. 9 Mary Persons remained perfect with a 45-30 win at Class A D-I No. 6 Lamar County.
In Class 2A, No. 10 Fannin County sinks six spots with a 48-45 loss at Union County after beating the Panthers 47-21 two weeks earlier. No. 5 Banks County won at Habersham Central 40-24 while No. 6 Landmark Christian lost at Carrollton 68-55 and at Class 3A No. 3 Wesleyan 56-46. Shadae Thorpe (22) and Laniyah Richardson (21) combined for 43 points as No. 8 Northeast-Macon drilled ACE 72-42. No. 9 Thomson lost 56-44 to Class 4A No. 5 Stockbridge.
Class A D-I No. 1 Galloway fell 75-65 at Class 6A No. 3 Woodward Academy at the War Eagle Classic. No. 3 Elbert County defeated No. 7 Oglethorpe County 73-54 after the Patriots won at No. 8 Athens Christian 55-47 behind Amber Watkins’ 17 points and beat Tallulah Falls 61-47 to move up two spots. No. 4 Woodville-Tompkins lost in the Savannah Holiday Classic semifinals to undefeated Hilton Head Christian, SC 69-55 before bouncing back with a 60-46 win against Calvary Day. No. 6 Lamar County gains a spot with a 37-32 win over Trinity Christian before losing to Class 3A No. 9 Mary Persons 45-30. Heard County (7-1) and Claxton (6-4) slip out of the poll. Heard County, last week’s No. 6, lost 50-43 at Handley, AL and slide out with a small margin for error playing a weaker schedule. Claxton was beat by returnee No. 9 Bryan County 63-49, Kayley Wedlow erupting for 35 points. No. 10 Darlington gets their first look at the Top 10 fresh of wins over Chattooga (59-44) and Pepperell (61-40). The Tigers’ only loss has come against Class 3A No. 6 Pickens 62-40 and will start seeing tougher competition starting with Rome today.
Chattahoochee County (2-5) has become an early season measuring stick in Class A D-II Region 6 as they were beat by No. 2 Taylor County 68-59 before losing to No. 5 Schley County 49-47. No. 6 Montgomery County had the best win of the week, victorious at Vidalia 63-53. No. 7 Mt. Zion-Carrollton had a 3-1 week including going 2-1 in the SMI Christmas Classic, beating Central-Carrollton 47-30 and Temple 35-30 with a 66-38 loss to tournament champion Cass sandwiched in between. Randolph-Clay (6-2) slips out of the poll with a 47-43 loss at St. Anne-Pacelli. No. 10 Jenkins County debuts coming off a strong 34-32 win at Screven County.
